QUAKERS MEAN BUSINESS IN GIRARD

GIRARD OH- Salem is no stranger to coming away with big wins. On Tuesday night the Quakers went on the road and beat one of the hottest basketball teams our area has to offer. The Quakers held down Girard and pulled off the massive win 54-50.  The third quarter was key, as the Quakers came out of halftime and outscored Girard 16-11. That was just enough to hold back the Indian’s 21 point final frame.

Camden Sampson led the way for Salem grabbing 15 points including three big shots from behind the arc. Caden Swiger was also in double figures on the night scoring 14 points.  Ross Davidson contributed 6 points.

Michael Palmer had a huge night for Girard finishing with 16 points.  He gathered a double double with 13 rebounds.  Gus Johnson, and Thomas Cardiero were both in double figures as well with 12 points a piece.

Salem will return to league play on Friday as they travel to Minerva.  Girard also returns to conference play Friday night as they stay home to host Jefferson.

GIRARD IS STILL ON THE NICE LIST

GIRARD, OH- As we move into the new year, some teams are looking to stay hot in this cold weather and some are looking to turn their season around in the new year. In Tuesday night’s matchup between the Girard Lady Indians and the McDonald Lady Blue Devils, Girard was determined to stay hot and move closer to the top of the NE8. Meanwhile, McDonald looked to get a huge road win to get some momentum to turn their season around. The Lady Blue Devils were able to get out to an early lead, but from the second quarter and on, the Lady Indians took over and never looked back as they were able to walk away with a 38-18 victory.

McDonald seemed to have the better start as they were able to get out to a 7-6 lead after the first period, but Girard had other ideas after the second period started. The Lady Indians jumped back quickly to put up 12 points and held McDonald’s offense to only 3 points in the second period to take an 18-10 lead going into the half. In the second half, Girard kept that momentum going as they put up 20 total points and completely shut down the Lady Blue Devils offense as they held them to 8 total points in the last half of the game. Girard’s push and tight defense allowed them to separate from McDonald and get the victory.

For Girard, Sieasia Tripplett led the way with 10 points on the night. Makenzee White added 9, Mia Malito and Abbie Rafferty both contributed 7 points for the Lady Indians.

For McDonald, Alivia Morrison led the way with 7 points. Both Gracie Callow and Grace Bundy added 4 points respectively.

Looking ahead, Girard will move to 7-4 overall and stay at 3-2 in the NE8 as they will be back in action on Thursday, January 5th where they will host South Range. For McDonald, they will move to 3-6 overall and stay 0-3 in the MVAC Scarlet as they will be back in action on Monday, January 2nd where they will host Lowellville. Don’t miss it on YSNLive.com!

CARDIERO’S 1000 HIGHLIGHTS GIRARD’S VICTORY

GIRARD OH-  It was a big night in Girard for one of their standouts Thomas Cardiero.  He came in to the game needed 7 points to reach a career milestone of 1000.  It might have been a slow night by his standards, but 7 points was exactly what he finished with to reach that goal of 1k.  More important than that his teammates came together to grab their seventh win of the season beating McDonald 48-32.

The offense was led by Gus Johnson who put together another strong night with 20 points.  Bobby Alejars also got himself in to double figures by collecting 11 points.  Jordan Johnson also contributed 7 points.

McDonald was paced by Greg Costantino who impressed with 15 points.  Joey Cappuzzello also threw in 7 points to the Blue Devils cause.

Girard will be off until the new year as they await a matchup at home against Salem on January 3rd.  McDonald is back at it on Thursday as they travel Heartland Christian to play Columbiana.

GIRARD SPOILS RAIDERS HOME OPENER

CANFIELD OH- It has been a tough start to the season for South Range. They spent the first four games of the year on the road.  After seeing all four of those games fall against them, they finally came back home for their home opener on Friday.  It wasn’t an easy task to get back on track, Girard came to town atop of the NE8.  The Indians spoiled the home opener with a gun show winning the contest 54-37.

Gus Johnson continued to prove that he is one of the best players in the area. He rocked the Raiders by scoring 26 points. Thomas Cardiero was also a tough puzzle for the Raiders to solve as he scored 17.   Ayden Leon. Nate Lewis, and Jared Klucinec all led the Raiders with 9 points each.

Girard is back in action on Tuesday as they host Lakeview. South Range goes back on the road as they go to Jefferson.

POLAND SHOWS THEY CAN STILL BE TOP DOG

POLAND OH- A lot of pre season NE8 polls showed this could be a down year for Poland inside the conference. With teams like Struthers, Girard, and South Range always nipping at the heels, some people thought it was their time. But no one asked the players in Poland’s locker room. On Thursday night they showed exactly what they thought of their doubters with a 42-22 win over Girard to open the NE8 season.

The scoring was spread out for Poland.  Much like their win in Boardman on Monday the Bulldogs are finding many players with opportunities to score.  9 different Bulldogs scored on the night. They were led by Mary Brant who finished with 9.  Sarah Forsyth wasn’t far behind her finishing with 7.  Ariana Daniels, and Ava Nicholudis both finished with 5 as well.

It was a struggle offensively for the Indians. They were led by Abbie Rafferty who dropped points.  Sieasia Triplett had a nice day with 5 points.

FALCON FEVER KEEPS GROWING

GIRARD, OH- In round 2 of Division IV, Region 13 we got a matchup between two familiar foes in Girard and Jefferson as the Indians hosted the Falcons. The Falcons, who are continuing their great season, looked to get off to a hot start against a strong Girard team that can get going at any time. Jefferson’s seniors, especially quarterback Grant Hitchcock showed that they did not want their season to end just yet with a gutsy win over Girard, 26-20.

Hitchcock started Jefferson off right with a 28-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kaige Boczar to go up 6-0. Girard would punch back with an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback Stephen Sims, but Hickcock and Boczar would connect again to give the Falcons a 12-7 lead at half. To begin the second half, Girard forced a fumble and shifted momentum with an ensuing score on sneaky play by Sims, and Bobby Alejars who grabbed a sweep and found Anthony Bengala for a 30-yard touchdown pass to give Girard a 13-12 lead. Jefferson’s offense kicked it into the next gear after the trick play and scored on two straight possessions thanks again to Hitchcock. Girard would strike late, but time was not in their favor as Jefferson walked away with the victory.

Looking ahead, Girard will end their season with a 8-4 record. Congratulations to the Indians on an amazing season. For Jefferson, they will advance to round 3 and will take on Canton South next Saturday.

MALITO MASTERS THE MIDDLE

GIRARD OH- Have you ever tried stepping into a position that you’ve never been in before? If your answer is yes then you know exactly how hard it is. That is what Girard Senior Maddie Malito had to find the fortitude to accomplish this year. Over the summer Malito was asked to transition to be a middle blocker. With her size, you can imagine she was initially unconfident in her ability to accomplish the task. But coach Walters did a great job seeing what she could do before Maddie even saw it. When she got her first block over the summer her confidence slowly but surely grew.  It was really her vertical leap that was the difference maker.  Malito’s athleticism makes her the perfect middle blocker.

Her leadership has shined through this transition as well. Imagine the lesson all the younger players had sitting right in front of them.  To do whatever the team needs you to do, no matter how far outside your comfort zone it may be. Maddie finished with 27 blocks on the season. 24 of them were solo blocks. Malito was exceptionally good at winning those 1 on 1 matchups.

Maddie took the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her senior season. She talks to Anthony Hartwig about living up to her last name, what the transition to the middle has been like, and so much more.  Check out the last Girard senior edition of Indian Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

GIRARD WINS SECOND IN A ROW OVER HUBBARD

GIRARD, OH- As we begin to roll deeper into the playoffs, no other team has had a more up and down season than Girard. The Indians have had to deal with injuries and tough losses as they were on their way to a great regular season. But in their Division IV, Region 13 matchup against a familiar foe in Hubbard, Girard looked back to Stephen Sims to lead them. A low scoring first half transitioned into a more back and forth second half, with both teams trading blows. But eventually possession time was a factor against the Eagles as Girard walked away with a 30-20 victory.

Hubbard struck first early with a touchdown by Ben Wilcox, but Girard answered right back with a connection from Dominick Tollone to Anthony Bengala to tie it up at 7 a piece. A blocked punt by the Indians would allow them to settle for a field goal to go up 10-7 at the half. In the second half, just like the first, Hubbard scored out the gate, but Girard answered and regained the lead at 16-14. Girard slowly started taking over after another score to go up 23-14 going into the final stanza. Girard would keep Hubbard off the board again and Sims would extend the lead to make it 30-14 with a 41-yard run. Hubbard would eventually find the endzone one last time, but ran out of time to make a comeback.

Hubbard’s season will come to an end with a 6-5 record. Congratulations to the Eagles on a tremendous season. Girard will advance to the second round as they will host another familiar foe, Jefferson Area next Friday. Don’t miss it on YSN!

Lauren Pallone, and Bree Latell both were on fire for the Indians. Pallone finished the night 22 kills while Latell was right behind her with 20.  Latell was also efficient as an attacker hitting .457 for the match.  Allison Durkin had a fantastic day setting up 44 assists for her offense.  Bailey Walters led the team defense with 16 digs.
