LADY SPARTANS DOUBLED UP BY HARDING

BOARDMAN, OH- You just knew it’d be a heavyweight bout on Saturday afternoon as Harding visited Boardman, but it was the Lady Raiders that came out swinging from the bell on their way to a 68-34 victory.

Raegan Burkey led the way for the Lady Spartans with 9 points, a pair of rebounds and an assist.  Maria Torres tossed in a pair from beyond the arc on her way to an 8 point day, while bringing down 4 rebounds.  Emma Mills also contributed with 6 points and a pair of caroms.

Boardman will look to bounce back against Cardinal Mooney on Monday with hopes to sweep the season series.  If you’re unable to make it to the House of Cards, you can tune in on YSN.  Varsity is slated for 7:30 with Nate Keiper on the call.

MUSLOVSKI STAYS RED-HOT; CLIPPERS BOUNCE BULLDOGS

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It was a game that was circled on the calendars for both teams, albeit, for different reasons.  East Palestine was attempting to gain its first victory over the Clippers in the Muslovski-era of Columbiana, while Columbiana was looking to lock up a stranglehold on the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.  It ended up being Columbiana who showed up shooting off the bus, essentially, on their way to a 75-33 drubbing of the Lady Bulldogs.

Columbiana Senior, Kayla Muslovski, was phenomenal in her finale against the Bulldogs putting up 36 points in about 3 and a half quarters of play.  Grace Witmer also showed up in a big way adding 10 in the scorebook for Columbiana while Karissa Tringhese and Grace Hammond set the tone on the glass combining for 16 boards.

For East Palestine, Morgan Rutledge led the way with 12 points and was supplemented by Kenzee Johnston’s 7, and Paige Snyder’s 6 tallies.

Both team’s next test will be against Southern Local.  East Palestine (10-7, 6-4) will host the Lady Indians on Wednesday while Columbiana (15-3,11-0) will travel to The Wigwam Thursday to wrap up their conference schedule.

EAST PALESTINE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3) WITH WILL FRANKLIN

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Coming off the most successful year in recent history, and Coach Franklin’s most successful as the Head Coach, the Lady Bulldogs are looking to build on a 17-win season just a year ago.  It won’t be an easy road, but it’s certainly attainable.

The Lady Dogs are flying high after a big victory over Springfield in overtime this week.  Now, as the calendar turns over to 2020, the Lady Dogs turn their attention back to the EOAC, and have their hands full with trying to rebound from a tough stretch of games.

We caught up with Coach “Frank” to discuss the opportunities ahead as well as what he’s looking to build upon this season.

All that and more on this week’s episode of East Palestine Coach’s Corner with Will Franklin.

LADY BULLDOGS PREVAIL IN OVERTIME

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It wasn’t quite a playoff game in the Dog Pound last night.

But boy, did it feel like it.

In a game that neither Springfield nor East Palestine wanted to let slip through their fingers, it was an incredible showing of togetherness and tenacity from “The Fab 5” dressed in white that stole the show on their way to a 61-59 victory over Springfield in overtime.

Outstanding and timely defense from junior Payton Sherry and Kenzee Johnston set up opportunities for the offense on the other side of the floor.  Sherry was able to cash in on a perfect play call on an in-bound pass to set up overtime.  Then, in the extra session, it was Joclyn Fristik who came up with the shot of the night from beyond the arc down by 1- leaving 6 seconds on a running clock to which Springfield couldn’t respond.

Fristik led the way in points for both sides with 26, along with a side of 3 steals.  Payton Sherry had 10 points, 7 boards, 6 assists and 2 vital charges taken that swung the momentum back to the Brown and White.  Contributions were spread evenly offensively as Morgan Rutledge and Paige Snyder tacked on 8, while Kenzee Johnston tallied 7.

Abby Joseph led the way for the Lady Tigers with 16, while Kylee Kosek chipped in 15.

EP will now ramp up for EOAC leader and rival, Columbiana on Monday.

RUTLEDGE GOES FOR CAREER HIGH; DOGS EDGE UNITED

EAST PALESTINE, OH- When it comes to Christmas, it’s better to give than to receive.  For East Palestine Junior, Morgan Rutledge, she gave a Christmas performance her parents will never forget as she and her teammates outlasted EOAC rival United to the tune of 45-42 Monday evening.

In a game that came down to last-minute free-throws, the Lady Bulldogs cashed in diamonds when the pressure looked to burst pipes.

Rutledge posted a career-high 16 points in a physical game, controlling the paint against the Lady Eagles.  Payton Sherry had a double-double with a team-high 18 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals while Sophomore Paige Snyder continued to thrive with 11 tallies, 8 rebounds, and 3 rips for East Palestine.

For the Lady Eagles, Bailey Boosz had a game-high 23 points, while Morgan Briceland contributed 6.

Both teams will break for Christmas before they return to action.  East Palestine will welcome Springfield to town on December 30th, while United will have some time to regroup when they meet Lisbon on January 6th.

FITCH GIRLS FALL TO PERRY

AUSTINTOWN, OH- It wasn’t exactly the way the Fitch Girls wanted to go into the Christmas break, but a tough 54-51 loss at home will provide motivation moving forward for the Lady Falcons.  Perry came to the Falcon’s Nest and behind a 16-point fourth quarter, were able to go home happy on Saturday afternoon.

For Fitch, Daria Williams had 19 points while Emma Bartlett had 16.

Austintown Fitch (4-3) will now prep to play Kenmore Thursday, January 2nd at 7pm at home.

SLOW START LEADS TO BIG FINISH FOR COLUMBIANA

COLUMBIANA, OH- There were many left scratching their heads after the first quarter ended and the Lady Clippers had a 4-1 lead over United.  Both teams were slow out of the locker room to start things but turned up the scoring the rest of the way, but in the end, Columbiana and the press was too much for United as the Clippers scurried away with a 43-31 victory.

United scored 15 in the second frame and went into the half trailing by just one, but we presume to be a stellar halftime speech from Coach Crismon gave his Clippers plenty of fuel, and a 19 point explosion happened in the third quarter to provide separation.  Senior Kayla Muslovski set the tone with 19 points on the night, which was supplemented by great efforts on both ends of the floor from Grace Hammond (15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) Karissa Tringhese (3 points) and Tori Long (6 points.)

The Lady Eagles were paced by Bailey Boosz who had 11 points and 3 rebounds, and Celeste Hofmeister who had a 7-point evening.

Columbiana (4-3, 3-0) will enjoy their break until after the New Year where they’ll play Leetonia at home on January 2nd.  United will head to Lowellville Saturday to take on the Lady Rockets.

LADY REBELS FLEX AGAINST BROOKFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- If you look “grit” up in the dictionary, there’s bound to be a reference to the 2019-2020 Crestview Lady Rebel Basketball Team.  OK, maybe not literally, but there should be.  Especially after the slow start to the evening, the Lady Rebs were determined to pick up a key win at home and did just that to the tune of 50-22 over Brookfield.

Crestview shot 35% from the field and went 3/16 from beyond the arc, but were still able to find big transition buckets and HUGE rebounding opportunities that turned into buckets.  In fact, the Rebels- as they’ve done each game this year, outrebounded their opponents.  Against Brookfield, it was a 37-21 advantage for Crestview.

Point Park recruit, and Senior Rebel- Tanner Hoffer had an explosive night with 15 points and 9 boards along with 3 steals.  Krista Perry also chipped in on the victory with 14 points, 9 boards, 4 assists, and a steal.  Mara Halas made a triumphant return to the lineup with 10 points, 3 caroms, and 3 helpers as well.

Crestview goes to 4-2 on the young season, and will now take on Hubbard on Saturday at 1:30.

DOUBLE TROUBLE; PEREZ, LIBERATI LIFT LISBON WITH DOUBLE-DOUBLES

LISBON, OH- It’s a tag-team that is sure to make waves in the EOAC this year, as it has done in the past.  Lisbon’s Maddie Liberati and Izzy Perez are at it again, and this time Leetonia was the victim of the two-headed monster for the Lady Blue Devils en route to a 62-38 conference victory Monday.

Liberati led the way with 25 points and 11 boards, while Perez patrolled the perimeter with 24 tallies and 10 steals.  Tabby Ketchum also contributed defensively with 5 steals and four rebounds.

For Leetonia, Anna Buffone continued to impress with 10 points, while Allison Francosky cleaned the glass for the Lady Bears with 10 rebounds.  Ella Gregorino also continued her success behind the arc with a pair of threes.

Lisbon (2-4, 1-1) will look to keep the momentum going against Southern on Thursday.
