SITTING EM DOWN

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline softball has been rolling this season. The Irish have quickly become one of the top teams in the area, winning 18 games in a row before losing their first. The Irish are ranked #1 in Division III. They also are the one seed in the northeast district for tournaments. A big reason for Ursuline’s success is the leadership and dominance of their senior pitcher Emily Holland. Holland as become a mainstay for the Irish inside the circle, and also has brought power and consistency to their lineup. Holland has plenty of experience not just with Ursuline, but with travel ball. That experience shines through when you watch Holland play.

Holland has put up impressive numbers not just in the circle, but at the plate as well. In the circle Holland has thrown 61.2 IP. That leads the team. She has a ERA of 2.04. Holland has struck out 56 and walked 14. She has only given up 18 earned runs on the season. At the plate Emily is hitting at a clip of .477. Holland has hit 3 HR and knocked in 27 RBI.

Holland also fields her position well, only making 2 errors this season. Emily has signed on to play softball at the next level with Old Dominion. The Panthers just won the Great Midwest Championship, so Holland is stepping in to an already successful program.

Emily took the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her senior season. They discuss the Irish team chemistry, hitting and pitching, and so much more. Irish fans won’t want to miss this exclusive interview with another softball senior. The latest Irish Softball Player Profile “Sitting Em Down” is live!

IRISH WIN FINAL TOURNAMENT TUNE UP

Mia Opalick toed the rubber for Ursuline. The ace lasted five and a third innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out seven. Emily Holland came on in relief. She got the final 5 outs for the Irish to seal up the win and earn the save.

MOONEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO IRISH

STRUTHERS, Ohio

Cold and uneventful through the first 3 innings, a matchup between two storied programs in St. Vincent-St. Mary and Cardinal Mooney turned out to be a back-and-forth affair.

Plating one in the bottom half of the fourth, Mooney took the lead thanks to a ground out by Mickey Valesquez that allowed Ian Francis to come across. Valesquez’s ground out also advanced Matt Womer to third with one away. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, a ground out and an eventual pickoff at first base would strand the runner.

St. V’s needed no time at all to respond, both tying and taking the lead thanks to one swing of the bat by senior Andrew Morse. With runners on second and third with two away, Morse would rope one into left field to clear the bases.

The Irish would go on to score another run in the top half of the 6th when back-to-back walks put two men on with only one away. Solid all day defensively, Saint V’s Aistis Miskinis made his mark offensively on the game when he hit an infield single to bring across a run and move the Irish lead to 3-1.

After a scoreless bottom 6th and top 7th, the Cardinal’s headed to the plate with just 3 outs to score at least 2 runs. A dropped third strike that allowed the leadoff runner to reach followed by a walk had runners on the corners with one away. A fielders choice allowed Mooney to come within 1 but also left them with just 1 out remaining.

With a runner on third and no outs left to give, Mooney had one of their quickest on the basepath paired with one of their best hitters at the dish. Already with a double to his name, Ethan Shaw needed to just put one into the outfield to give the runner on second, Jordan Sheehan, a chance to score. Shaw would deliver with a bloop single into right field and tie the ballgame at 3.

A valiant effort to battle back was in the end, unrewarding for Mooney. In the top half of their first extra inning, Saint V’s Morse would again deliver when it mattered most, this time with an RBI single that was knocked down by Ethan Shaw but never had a chance to make the out. Trailing by one, the Cardinals were unable to recreate their same 7th inning magic, dropping to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 4-3.

TOP PERFORMERS:

CARDINAL MOONEY

Ethan Shaw – 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI

Mickey Valesquez – 2-for-4, 1 RBI

ST. VINCENT-ST. MARY

THE ISLAND OF BARBATO

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline softball has opened a lot eyes in the season of 2021. Every part of the game this year has been played at a high level. Thehe Irish have gotten out to an undefeated start at 15-0. Their roster has tons of talent, and plenty of players who are either already signed and committed to play at the next level, or are being highly recruited. Setting the table at the top of Ursuline’s lineup is senior Maris Barbato. Barbato has been a mainstay in the Irish lineup since stepping foot on the Ursuline campus. Maris excels in every aspect of softball, she is a very dangerous hitter that can use every part of the field, she can hit the ball out of the park, and she runs the bases exceptionally well. You better not sleep on her defense either. Barbato goes to the middle of the infield as a lockdown defender with great range, and an electric throwing arm. On the season, Barbato is hitting .517 with 4 doubles, 4 HR, and 15 RBI. Maris has only committed one error on the season and has had 35 total chances.

Maris has committed and signed on to play for Toledo next season as a Division 1 Collegiate athlete. Toledo plays in the MAC, and is a top tier team in the conference.

Barbato sat down with YSN;s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about her senior season. They discuss the focus from the team the year, playing on YSU’s field, and so much more. Hear from one of the leaders of a special Irish squad while you still can in this exclusive player profile “The Island Of Barbato.”
