BLUE JAYS BLAST OUT THE GATES

NORTH JACKSON OH- Snow forced Jackson Milton to wait a day longer to play Sebring. Their game being moved from Monday to Tuesday put them in a position to open up a boys/girls double header in their home gym. Boy did the girls get the show rocking early. They jumped ahead 20-0 and never looked back. Jackson Milton ran to a 64-20 win over the Trojans.

Kylie Wilson led the Jays with a monster 21 point performance. Ava Darney was in double figures before the first quarter ended. She finished with 19. Chelsea Williams was also in double figures with 11.

The Blue Jays will hit the road on Thursday as they travel to McDonald for a rematch with the Devils. McDonald got the better of them in their first meeting. Sebring will host Wellsville on Wednesday.

THE SPANISH CONNECTION

NORTH JACKSON OH- How many people do you know that would leave their friends and family for a year to travel across the globe to a new country, a new culture, and new people? For Jackson Milton’s Carla Blancafort, the choice was easy. She’s always wanted to come to the United States, and once the opportunity presented itself she jumped at the opportunity. Blancafort comes to us from Barcelona Spain. She gives Jackson Milton a Spanish connection.

Her teammates have tagged her the Blue Jays secret weapon. That’s not a bad way to describe her either. There is not a lot of film floating around out there on a girl who comes from across the world to play. When you add that to the fact that she is a dynamic basketball player who is tough to guard even with a solid scouting report, Blancafort has made life very challenging for her opponents.

Anthony Hartwig had the chance to talk with Blancafort in the latest Jackson Milton Player Profile. The Junior, that for all intent and purposes is being treated as a senior talks about her journey to America, her experience in the states, and so much more! You won’t want to miss this exclusive interview with Jackson Milton’s secret weapon Carla Blancafort.

JACKSON MILTON ABSORBS RAMS BEST SHOT

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Jackson Milton came in to Thursday’s matchup with Mineral Ridge with a must win mentality. After dropping their matchup earlier in the week to Western Reserve, the Blue Jays couldn’t afford any more losses in the league. Mineral Ridge had upset on the mind as they gave Jackson Milton every punch in their arsenal. The Blue Jays did just enough to win though as they escaped the Rams 46-39.

Kylie Wilson was the leading scorer for the Blue Jays despite being out for the third quarter due to an injury. In her absence, Ava Darney stepped up big. She scored most of her 12 points while Wilson was out. Chelsea Williams was also in double figures for the Jays with 11.

Ava Hulett led the Rams with 13 points, and right behind her was Olivia Booth with 12.

Jackson Milton will travel to Leetonia on Monday for an out of conference tune up. The Rams get back to action on Saturday hosting Sebring.

RESERVE STAYS ALIVE IN THE MVAC

BERLIN CENTER OH- The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC), both The Scarlet and Gray Division have presented themselves as a tough conference to come out of.

For the girls side of The Scarlet Division, that is no different! Going into Monday night, Waterloo (4-0) was leading followed by Springfield (5-1),  Jackson Milton (4-1) with both McDonald (2-2) and Western Reserve (2-2)  tied for fifth place.

Monday night was also round one of Jackson Milton versus Western Reserve, a rivalry that is deeply ingrained in some, it captivates what smaller school rivals are all about.

The band was out, and Western Reserve was ready for a party! From the tip, The Blue Jays started off with a 7-0 run, followed by a Blue Devil 6-0 run. A sign of what was to come for the remainder of the game.

In a night when offense was at a premium, and both teams clamped down extra hard on defense. Overall, it made the contest feel like an old-school, defensive battle all game.

The lead was exchanged multiple times between both teams; however, on a night when offensive buckets were hard to come by, foul trouble became the biggest story for The Lady Blue Jays.

As Jackson Milton had a few players in their limited roster get into foul trouble early, thus forcing them to play a less-physical brand of defense than they are accustomed to.

The biggest comparable statline? Free throw percentage. Where both teams had their fair share of opportunities, it was the better clip at the line for Reserve that made all the difference.

Brooke Schantz and The Lady Blue Devils took full advantage of that, getting themselves set up in both a single and double bonus opportunity in the second half.

With Schantz making up 17 of her team’s 43 points, including knocking down four clutch free throws to help ice it, and help earn her Player of the Game!

The Win for The Lady Blue Devils, paired with a Waterloo win over Springfield, has now created a log jam for second place in The MVAC Scarlet Division.

Now with Western Reserve, Jackson Milton, Springfield and McDonald all tied with 2 conference losses, it is shaping up to be a wild finish!

Jackson Milton will have another opportunity in the conference, as they go to Ram Country to take on Mineral Ridge (1-10) Thursday, January 13th.

Western Reserve will stay home, as they welcome Sebring (2-5) into Berlin Center for the first time in the new year. Also on Thursday, January 13th.
