Next up, Howland will host a big conference showdown with Fitch on Thursday, while Mooney looks to bounce back as they take on JFK at home.

HAVING A BAIR OF A TIME

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Brinkley Bair is storming into her senior season healthier and more determined than ever, ready to make a huge impact on the floor and leave her mark on the Mooney volleyball program. After battling through past seasons, she’s feeling stronger, faster, and more prepared to dominate in her final year.

Since joining Mooney last year, Bair has rediscovered her love for volleyball, and she credits head coach Toni Chahine for a big part of that. Under Chahine’s guidance, Bair has found new energy and passion for the game, and it’s showing in her performance.

Brinkley leads by example, both in practice and on game day. Her work ethic and positivity are contagious, and there isn’t a single player in the program who can’t learn from her. Whether it’s grinding through drills or keeping spirits high during tough matches, Bair is a model of what it means to be a leader.

As a strong outside hitter, Bair leads Mooney in multiple offensive categories. She’s racked up 123 kills, averaging 3.6 kills per set, and holds a team-best .379 hitting percentage with only 21 attack errors. Defensively, she’s just as impressive, with 123 digs (third on the team) and 3.6 digs per set. She’s also handled 117 serve receives, ranking second on the team in that category.

Off the court, Brinkley has her sights set on the business world after high school. With a solid understanding of social media, she’s already using her accounts, which have garnered a strong following, to promote businesses and build her brand.

Brinkley Bair has been a huge asset to the Mooney volleyball program, and with one year left, she’s looking to make an even bigger impact. Mooney fans better get out and watch her while they can, because they won’t regret it.

FALCONS CRUISE TO ANOTHER HOME WIN

AUSTINTOWN OH- Fitch kept their dominant season going on Tuesday, taking down Mooney in straight sets during the battle of the birds. The Falcons came out strong, grabbing control early and, despite a third-set push from Mooney, sealed the sweep (25-6, 25-6, 25-20).

Kylie Folkwein led the offense with 9 kills, while Katie Wilt and Kaliana Ray each chipped in 7 kills, with Ray adding 3 blocks at the net. Rylie Simons dished out 32 assists, now just 6 shy of reaching 2,000 in her career. Izzy DiRenzo anchored the defense with 15 digs.

WEEK 3 YSN VOLLEYBALL POWER RANKINGS RELEASED

COLUMBIANA, OH- As we roll into Week 3 of the high school volleyball season, the latest power rankings have tossed us a few curveballs, showing which teams are finding their stride and which ones are still figuring things out. Let’s break down the shifts and shakes in this week’s standings.

At the very top, Hoban holds steady at number one, a testament to their continued dominance on the field. However, the real shakeup starts right after them. West Branch has made a massive leap from 12th all the way to 2nd, knocking Girard down to 4th. This jump is a clear signal that West Branch isn’t just here to play; they’re here to challenge the throne.

Lakeview, previously in 5th, has nudged up to 3rd, showing a consistency that’s starting to pay dividends, while Canfield has shot up from 14th to 5th, possibly finding the rhythm they were missing early on.

Beaver Local and Crestview both made positive strides, with Beaver stepping up to 6th from 15th and Crestview moving slightly from 4th to 7th. East Liverpool remains in the game, adjusting slightly from 7th to 8th.

The middle of the pack saw significant rearrangement. Garfield slipped from 3rd to 9th, perhaps feeling the sting of a tough matchup or two, while Fitch climbed a few steps from 13th to 10th. Jefferson and Columbiana made modest climbs, but the real talk might be about Mooney, which slid from 9th down to 13th, signaling some on- court struggles that need quick fixes.

Lower down, McDonald holds relatively steady, as do LaBrae and St John, but Edgewood and Hubbard are looking to regain some earlier ground they lost, showing slight improvements in their game strategies.

New entrants to the top 25, like Heartland Christian and Pymatuning Valley, are stirring up the mix, proving that every game week is a chance to climb the ladder or risk sliding down.

MOONEY MAKES PROGRAM HISTORY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Mooney just etched their names into the school record books with a double dose of history on Wednesday. They notched their 15th win of the season—more than any other squad before them—and pushed deeper into the playoffs than ever.

In a nail-biter against Akron St. Vincent St. Mary, Mooney edged out a 5-4 victory to bump their record up to 15-3. Ella Szalay was all over the field, bagging a pair of goals and controlling the draw four times. Frankie Cassese was clutch, netting two goals including the decider that sealed the win. Angelee Blasko contributed with a goal and a helper. On the defensive end, Kendell Scriber was a force, scooping up five ground balls and forcing three turnovers. Between the pipes, Alyssa Ray came up big with eight saves to keep Mooney in the driver’s seat.

Next up, Mooney is set to clash with Chagrin Falls in the Regional Quarterfinals. They’re heading to Chagrin Falls for a 5 PM showdown on Friday.

MOONEY GETS THROUGH THE RAIN TO ADVANCE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney powered through a rainy evening to secure a win over Louisville, sailing through the first round of tournament play with a decisive 15-7 victory.

Now boasting a 14-3 record for the season, the team was propelled by standout player Ella Szalay, who racked up an impressive 7 goals, dished out 2 assists, and forced 4 turnovers. Angelee Blasko contributed with a solid 2 goals and 2 assists, while Natalie Blasko and Sophia Rotunno each netted 2 goals. Frankie Cassese and Lainey Hunt each chipped in with a goal. Between the posts, Alyssa Ray kept the defense tight with 11 saves.

Mooney’s next challenge is hosting Akron St. V’s this Tuesday, 7 PM at YSU Soccer Field. Bring on the next round!

ROTUNNO RIGHT AT HOME

In just her second year wielding a lacrosse stick for Mooney, Sophia Rotunno has already become the defensive backbone of her team, and her journey is just getting started. Sophia, a sophomore, didn’t just join the varsity squad—she stormed it, quickly establishing herself as a standout player despite her relative inexperience in the sport.

Sophia’s knack for dominating the defensive end is evident in her stats. With a whopping 69 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers this season, she’s not just participating; she’s setting the pace. But don’t let her defensive prowess fool you—Sophia is no one-trick pony. She’s also proving herself as a rising offensive threat, netting 13 goals and dishing out 4 assists. Each game, her confidence grows, and her ability to impact the game on both ends of the field becomes more pronounced.

Athleticism and competitiveness run deep in the Rotunno family. Sophia’s sisters were all stars in their high school sports, and it’s clear that the family’s competitive edge has profoundly influenced Sophia. This intrinsic drive makes her a force to be reckoned with on the field, as she channels this familial spirit into every check, sprint, and shot.

Looking ahead, the future is as bright as a championship trophy for Sophia and the Mooney lacrosse program. With two more years left in her high school career, the potential for growth—both for her and her team—is immense. If her first two years are any indication, the lacrosse fields at Mooney are going to see a lot of Sophia leading charges, snatching victories, and maybe, just maybe, rewriting the school’s record books. As she continues to develop her skills and further gel with her teammates, the sky is the limit for this young athlete whose career is as promising as a clear day.
