JFK RUNS OUT OF STEAM IN REGIONAL FINAL

AKRON OH- Warren JFK came in to Friday night’s game against Richmond Heights as the underdog in a lot of people’s eyes. The Eagles however, did not listen to that noise. They put up a very valiant effort but eventually fell to the Spartans 67-50.

The Eagles started the game strong, leading after one quarter of play 15-14. In the first minutes of the second, JFK pushed their lead to 18-15, before the Spartans went on a 7-2 run to lead 23-20. Richmond Heights would push that lead to 32-24 in the last 2 minutes of the half.

JFK kept the Spartans in striking distance through the third quarter. Cam Hollobaugh hit a three at the buzzer to end the third quarter to make it 49-41 at that point.  In the final frame Cam completed a three point play to make it a 54-48 Richmond Heights lead. The door was open for the Eagles, but Richmond Heights found a second gear and ended the game on a 13-2 run to win 67-50.

Hollobaugh led the Eagles with 19 points on the night. Gabe Green was also in double figures for JFK with 11.

The Eagles end their impressive season with a record of 13-5.

COWBOYS RIDE COMES TO A STOP

BARBERTON, Ohio –

After dominating their way through the Northeast 2 district, the Chaney Cowboys (12-7) traveled to Barberton for a neutral site matchup with the surprise winner of the Northeast 4 district, Gilmour Academy (11-9).

The #10 seeded Gilmour Academy upset the district favorite, Warrensville Heights, in the district semi-finals then defeated fellow cinderella story, #11 seeded Padua Franciscan, for the district title.

Chaney, the clear favorite in this matchup, jump started the night thanks to a pair of three pointers from senior guard Sharrod Taylor. By the end of the first quarter of play, the Cowboys were up 15-5.

Trailing by 10, the Gilmour Academy Lancers came out inspired in the second quarter of play. Led by Ben DeMell’s 11 second quarter points, the Lancers were able to close the Cowboy’s lead to just 3 point with 2 minutes to play. Thanks to an offensive rebound and put back score from Quincy Jones, the Cowboys got their lead back out to 5 to end the half.

Coming out of the locker room, Gilmour’s Ben DeMell continued his stellar play. The 6-foot-5 senior scored 9 straight points for the Lancers, playing a key role in tying the game up with just 30 seconds to play in the 3rd.

Usually dominant on the offensive glass, the Cowboys had no answer for Gilmour Academy’s size. Taking their first lead of the game with 7 minutes remaining, the Lancers packed in the paint and forced the Cowboy’s to shoot.

Unfortunately for Chaney, they went cold just as the Lancers got hot. Scoring 22-points in the final quarter of play, Gilmour Academy completed another upset on their postseason run, defeating Chaney 59-52.

LEADING SCORERS:

Chaney

Sharrod Taylor 18 points

Quincy Jones 11 points

Cam Lawrence 8 points

Gilmour Academy

Ben DeMell 26 points

Ryan Mueller 11 points

STRUTHERS UNBEATEN SEASON ENDS IN BARBERTON

BARBERTON, Ohio –

Heading into the night with an unblemished 26-0 record, the Struthers Wildcats put their perfect season on the line against the 8-time state champion powerhouse, St. Vincent-St. Mary. The Fighting Irish of Saint V’s have won 12 straight district titles, 4 straight Regional championships, and are currently the #27 ranked team in the nation, according to MaxPreps.

Winning their first three playoff games by a combined 154 points, Saint V’s was the number ranked team in the Northeast 3 district, with only one other single digit seed in their bracket.

The Struthers Wildcats faced a much-needed test in their district final, requiring double-overtime to pull out a win against the Chardon Hilltoppers. Prior to their win, the Wildcats had only 2 games with a final margin of at most 15.

Struggling out of the gates, Struthers quickly saw the athleticism and skill of the Irish. With a 9-0 run to start the game, the Wildcats wouldn’t see their first points until a layup from senior guard Aidan Slocum mid-way through the quarter. After bringing Saint V’s run to an end, the two teams would trade baskets until the Irish would go on an 11-point run to end the quarter.

Already ahead by 22, Saint V’s picked up right where they had left off to end the 1st. The Irish went on an 8-point run to start the quarter, scoring a total of 19 unanswered points against the Cats. The offensive onslaught wouldn’t end there for the Irish, scoring 50 points for the half.

Although trailing by 37 to start the half, Struther’s Slocum still had some fight in him. Slocum came out and scored 5 straight points to start the 2ndhalf and would knock down a shot from long range later on in the quarter.

With the running clock in effect, the game was over in just 1 hour and 6 minutes. Saint V’s would come out victorious, 76-37.

LEADING SCORERS:

Struthers

Aidan Slocum 12 points

William Bloom 7 points

Trey Metzka 4 points

St. Vincent-St. Mary

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE! EAGLES MOVING ON

AKRON OH- JFK had to hold on by their fingers on Tuesday night to advance in the Division IV regional tournament. The Eagles dominated Lucas for three quarters, leading 44-31 after three frames. Lucas cut the lead all the way down to two in the final quarter. The Eagles had to dig deep to hold off the Cubs and win 54-48.

Cam Hollobaugh and Gabe Green shared the team lead for the Eagles each putting in 15 points.

The Eagles advance to the regional final to play Richmond Heights. That game is set for Friday at 7:00 at Firestone High School in Akron.

TIGERS TAKEN OUT BY NORWAYNE

TWINSBURG OH

A snap, a double reverse, and an on the money strike last November propelled the Springfield Tigers football team over Norwayne in the closing seconds of their regional final matchup.

Fast forward just a little over 4 months and these two schools were back at it again, just in a different sport. The highest seeded teams out of the Northeast 1 and Northeast 3 districts traveled to Twinsburg for the chance at a Regional championship.

Norwayne (23-4) came into the night as winners in 11 of their last 12 matchups. The Bobcats secured their rematch with Springfield winning in overtime against Waynedale to secure their second straight district title. For the Springfield Tigers (18-5), it was a 10-point victory over Pymatuning Valley, securing their first district title since 2019 that led them into the night.

Taking over 2 and a half minutes to finally get on the board, the scoring started slow for both teams. The first quarter saw the lead change 6 different times before Springfield would take a firm hold ofthe quarter. After junior guard, Adam Wharry, stepped in front of a driving Norwayne player to take a charge, the Tigers would go on an 8-1 run to end the quarter.

Despite their poor end to the first, Norwayne came out inspired to start the second. A 6-0 run to begin the quarter had the Bobcats within 1. Following a steal and an easy layup for Springfield’s Wharry to end Norwayne’s run, the two teams would exchange a pair of three pointersas well as a couple of free throws to knot the game up at 23 all heading into the locker room.

The third quarter saw the most production offensively from both teams, combining for 35total points. Like two heavyweights in the middle of the ring, Springfield and Norwayne would exchange leads 8 times in the final 4 minutes of the third. The two teams hit a total of 7 three pointers for the quarter.

With a 3-point lead heading into the final quarter of play, all the Bobcats needed to do was hold on, but Springfield wouldn’t go away easily. Although they would tie the game at 44 with just 4 minutes and 15 seconds remaining, the Tigers would never take the lead back in the final quarter. A mix of going cold from beyond the arc and Norwayne’s size showing up in the post would bring the Tigers season to an end, losing 55-49.

LEADING SCORERS:

Springfield

Clay Medvec – 17 points

Beau Brungard – 12 points

Adam Wharry – 12 points

Norwayne

Joey Raudebaugh – 14 points

Jacob Rupp – 11 points

Ameer Cunningham – 10 points

UP NEXT:

The road doesn’t get any easier from here on out for the Bobcats. Norwayne must now face Lutheran East (13-3). Ranked 15th in the state and 2nd in Division 3, the Lutheran East Falcons boast wins over St. Ignatius and Solon, with close loses to the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the state, St. Vincent-St. Mary and St. Edward. The Falcons are led by the 5th ranked player in the Ohio Class of 2021, Jalin Billingsley, a Georgetown commit.

STRUTHERS STAYS STRONG IN MARATHON THRILLER

STRUTHERS OH- Struthers has not gone underrated this season without their fare share of close calls, and tough games. However, their district championship game on Saturday against Chardon undoubtedly gave them their biggest challenge. Struthers outran Chardon in a double overtime marathon 116-108.

Struthers trailed by double digits in the first half, and once again had to overcome a shaky start. This is no stranger for the Wildcats though, as they made the proper adjustments and were eventually able to take a lead in the second half. Chardon would force the game in to overtime. In the overtime period just when it looked like the Wildcats were going to wrap it up, Chardon’s Josh Bruce buried a three to send the game into a double overtime. Struthers was finally able to make the clock strike midnight on Chardon’s Cinderella story winning in double overtime.

Struthers was led by Brandon Washington who masterfully put up 36 points. Aiden Slocum also had a strong night with 31 points. Trey Metzka notched 16 points for the Cats, and Luke Barker rounded out the double figure scorers with 14.

Struthers remains undefeated and will now advance to the Division II regional semifinals against St Vincent St Mary. That game will be held at Barberton High School on Thursday at 5:30.

CHANEY ROPES IN DISTRICT CROWN

POLAND, Ohio –

Almost two years ago, the Poland Bulldogs defeated the freshly re-established Chaney Boys Basketball program at Boardman High School for the Youngstown District title. While Chaney wouldn’t come away with the victory that day, the result would spark a fire in the basketball program.

Throughout the 2019-2020 season, the Cowboys adopted the rallying cry of “Unfinished Business.” The Chaney program had unfinished business and wanted to make it back to the district final. They would, defeating Struthers 53-50, earning the right to move on and face Akron Saint VincentSaint Mary in the regional semi-finals. Then, COVID-19 struck, and it seemed as if the world had stopped turning.

With their season cut short, Chaney never got their shot at Saint V’s. Coming into the 2020-2021 season, there was more unfinished business for the Cowboys. Their first step was to repeat as district champions and in today’s matchup between Chaney and Poland, the Cowboys would not only accomplish their first goal, but get revenge in the process.

On route to their 70-48 victory, three different Chaney Cowboys put up double digits in their win: Sharrod Taylor – 26, Cam Lawrence – 14, Josiah Gonzalez – 12.

UP NEXT:

With the district title secured, the Chaney Cowboys (12-6) will now move on to face off with the winner of the Northeast 4 District, the Gilmour Academy Lancers (10-9).

While it has been an easy ride to this point in the postseason for the Cowboys, winning each game by at least 22 points, the Lancers had to scrap and claw through their district. An upset win over #3 seed Warrensville Heights and a district final win over #11 seed Padua Franciscan, the Lancers have won their last two games by a combined 5-points.

Chaney and Gilmour Academy will vie for the chance at a Regional title Thursday the 11th at Barberton High School. Tip off is scheduled for 8:15 pm but could be delayed due to the Saint Vincent Saint Mary and Struthers game starting at 5:30 pm.

BLUE DEVILS DESTINED FOR DAYTON

MASSILLON OH- McDonald’s seven seniors have led their team on a mission this year. They had clear goals coming in of going as far as they could. Through a shut down, and being without their head coach for a chunk of games, McDonald has battled through the season. After beating conference rival Western Reserve in the regional semifinals, the Blue Devils beat Shadyside 58-50 to punch their ticket to Dayton, and the Division IV final four.

Sophia Constantino led a balanced Blue Devil offense with 17 points. She brought down 7 rebounds for McDonald as well. Molly Howard put up a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lucia Wolford was also in double figures with 10.

Shadyside kept McDonald in striking distance the whole game, but could never push them enough to take the lead. Paige Gorby led them with 13 points. Baylee Wach and Taylor Hendershot both contributed 12 for the Tigers.

McDonald advances to the state semifinals at the University of Dayton on Thursday. They will play Waterford at 2:00. This is McDonald’s first trip to state since 1991
