JFK’S HISTORIC SEASON CONTINUES

AKRON OH- The fact that it was JFK’s first trip to the state tournament in program history did not phase the Eagles one bit as they paved their way to the State Championship game with a 3-2 win over Fort Laramie.

Can Hollobaugh earned the win for JFK. Hollobaugh went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out seven.

Caeleb Meyer took the loss for Fort Loramie. The bulldog surrendered three runs on four hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking zero.

Gavin Shrum led the Eagles offense with two hits in two at bats.

Fort Loramie didn’t commit a single error in the field. Mack Fortman had the most chances in the field with six.

JFK advances to the Division IV State Championship game against Lincolnview on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 4:00 at Canal Park in Akron.

RAIDERS CANT TURN THE TIDES IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

AKRON OH- Momentum is a very real element of sports, and that was never more evident than in Sunday’s Division III State Championship game that saw South Range lose their grip of the game and fall to Fairview 10-0 in 6 innings.

The game started innocently enough, Bree Kohler worked around a 2 out single in the first, and on offense the Raiders hit a couple of hard hit balls for outs in a 1-2-3 inning. However, in the second inning the tides of the game would start to shift. An error opened the frame, and it appeared the Raiders might avoid it costing them, but a pair of two out hits would spark Fairview’s high powered offense and put them up 2-0.

The Raiders had what might have been their best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the inning. A pair of singles put two on with two outs. However, Fairview locked down the third out on a lazy infield pop up.

The Apache would grab full control of the game with a 4 run explosion in the 3rd. The inning opened with three straight hits, and then Fairview showed off their ability for situational hitting with some RBI groundouts. By the end of the 3rd, the Fairview fan base was rocking Firestone stadium.

Gretchen Bartels gave the Raiders their last gasp of life with a lead off double in the bottom of the third. A golden chance for the Raiders to respond. But to the Apache’s credit their defense once again locked down with runners on base. The same defense that made 5 errors in their state semifinal win over Wheelersburg played like a team of gold gloves in the championship.

The Raiders earned their second state runner up trophy in the program’s history. They tied the program record for most wins in a season with 30. For the first time, the Raiders earned a NE8 championship. They say goodbye to seniors Bree Kohler and Jillian Strecansky, but the horizon still looks bright for South Range.

EAGLES FLY TO PROGRAM’S FIRST FINAL FOUR

STRONGSVILE OH-

John F. Kennedy punched their ticket to the program’s first appearance in the State Final Four with a 7-2 win over Calvert on Saturday.

Calvert got on the board in the first inning when Mason Johnson lined out, driving in a run.

The Eagles tallied four runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught by was led by Alex DeSalvo, Gavin Shrum, and Cam Hollobaugh, who all drove in runs.

Shrum earned the victory on the hill for JFK. Shrum surrendered zero runs on zero hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one.

Max Paul took the loss for Calvert. The bulldog surrendered six runs on three hits over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one.

Jaden Rishel started the game for the Eagles. The righty surrendered two runs on five hits over two and a third innings

JFK launched one home run on the day. Hollobaugh went deep in the first inning.

Caleb Hadley went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead JFK in hits.

Josh Gase led Calvert with two hits in three at bats.

RAIDERS ONE WIN AWAY

AKRON OH- Once again a South Range softball tournament game got pushed back due to weather, forcing the Raider faithful to wait one more day. Well, South Range made it well worth the wait as they powered their way to a 5-1 win over Johnstown to earn a spot in the Division 3 State Championship.

The game did not start off on a great note for senior pitcher Bree Kohler. In the first inning, Kohler who only had 19 walks on the season coming into the day saw three hitters reach via the free pass in the first inning. With the bases loaded and 2 outs Kohler induced an infield pop out to get out of the jam. Kohler quickly righted the ship in the 2nd putting Johnstown down in order.

Kohler’s speed on the base paths got the Raiders on the board first in the third. Kohler singled to lead off the inning, was moved over by a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a throwing error while stealing 3rd.

That’s where the score would stay until the 5th inning when Kohler knocked in a run this time around with a single that scored Jamie Feren. Kohler was later caught trying to steal 2nd.

After striking out the first two hitters in the bottom of the 5th, Kohler gave up her first hit of the game. It was a powerful one. Julia Montie blasted a no doubt solo shot to dead center to cut the Raider lead in half 2-1.

Momentum seemed to be on the Johnie’s side as they retired the Raiders in order in the 6th, and then loaded the bases again with two outs. Kohler got a clutch strike out to leave the runners stranded, and shift the energy right back to South Range’s dugout.

In the top of the 7th the Raiders would make Johnstown regret not putting the runs up when they could. They put up a 3 spot in the 7th thanks to an error, and a pair of RBI triples from Kohler and Juli Stachowicz.

Now with a 5-1 lead Bree Kohler only allowed one hit in the seventh, securing the win and the Raiders spot in the State Championship.

The final line for Kohler in the circle was 7.0 IP 4 H 1 ER 4 BB 12 K.

Kohler also led the Raiders offense going 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Madison Dado went 1-3 with a run scored. Jamie Feren went 1-1 with a run scored. Gretchen Bartels was credited with an RBI on her suicide squeeze.

South Range advances to the State Championship on Sunday. They will play Sherwood Fairview at 4:00. The game will be held at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

South Range seniors Bree Kohler and Jillian Strecansky both had to miss their graduation ceremony this morning to travel with the team to Akron. They both received their diplomas prior to first pitch on the field from Principal Steve Rohan. Strecansky was a 2021 valedictorian.

RAIDERS WALK IT OFF IN EXTRAS TO OUTLAST GILMOUR ACADEMY

MASSILLON OH-Brandon Mikos threw a shutout and Mike Perry came through in the clutch with a late walk-off single to lead South Range past Gilmour Academy 1-0 in 10 innings on Thursday.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Mikos struck out 17, while Gilmour Academy pitchers sat down five.

A single by Charlie Shepherd in the fifth inning was a positive for the Lancers.

Mikos earned the victory on the mound for South Range. The pitcher went ten innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out 17, and walking zero. He threw 127 pitches.

Paddy Murphy took the loss for Gilmour Academy. The bulldog lasted two innings, allowing two hits and one run.

Ben DeMell started the game for Gilmour Academy. The pitcher lasted seven and a third innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out five.

Mikie Perry went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Raiders in hits.

South Range advances to the regional championship on Saturday. They will play Canton Central Catholic at 3:00 at Massillon Washington High School.
