POLAND’S POWERFUL DUO

POLAND, OH – The Poland Lady Bulldogs are having a season to remember as they are currently undefeated in the NE8 with a chance to win the league outright this week! That success can be linked to many things but one main reason is a group of talented senior leaders. Ariel Grischow and Leanne Williams are integral members of the Poland Lady Bulldogs soccer team, playing pivotal roles in the team’s success. As a senior midfielder, Ariel is the engine that drives the midfield with her exceptional ball-handling skills, vision, and awareness. Her ability to control the flow of the game, distribute precise passes, and contribute defensively has been instrumental in the Lady Bulldogs’ success on the field. Leanne, also a senior, has been a rock-solid presence between the posts for the Lady Bulldogs. With an impressive 75 saves on the season and five shutouts, Williams’ goalkeeping abilities have been nothing short of exceptional. Her shot-stopping, quick reflexes, and commanding presence in the box instill confidence in her teammates and serve as a barrier to opposing attackers. Leanne’s remarkable consistency and determination as a goalkeeper have played a crucial role in the Lady Bulldogs’ defensive solidity, making her a true asset to the team as they chase their goals and playoff run this season.

Brant is known for her rock-solid defensive prowess, with a keen sense of anticipation and remarkable agility, she has stopped countless opposition attacks, earning her a reputation as a tenacious defender. Her ability to read the game and initiate crucial counterattacks from the backline has been pivotal to the Lady Bulldogs’ success. Sabrin, on the other hand, complements Mary’s skills perfectly as a fellow senior defender, Ava brings her own brand of determination and skill to the team. PAGANO’S PROWESS

POLAND, OH – The Poland Bulldogs football team have a unique lineup where every single position has the ability to take over a football game. All of those skill positions are a huge part to what helps the quarterback command the troops every week and lead them to victory. This year’s squad is quarterbacked by Dom Pagano who’s talent as a senior quarterback and also a defensive back has been a game-changer for the Bulldogs. His precision passing and ability to read the field with a keen football IQ have led to numerous touchdowns and victories. As a defensive back, Dom’s agility and field vision has stopped many opponent’s plays and secured critical big plays when the Dogs need him most.

MICKEY’S MANTEL IS LOADED WITH ACHIEVEMENTS

STRUTHERS OH- Being a student athlete immediately presents time constraints, ensuring you achieve in both the classroom and the court or field. Then there are the few student athletes that mix working a part-time job in their schedule. But how many work volunteer hours as a firefighter on top of all that? That is exactly the case for Struthers senior setter Mickey Taaffe!

Leading her team in assists with 184 on the season at the time of this article, Taaffe goes beyond hard work on the court. A standout student in the classroom, she also finds time to work part time at a local Italian restaurant and volunteer as a firefighter!

NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH – The Springfield Tigers are not only led by a strong senior class, but also but some key contributors from their younger classes too. One such junior, Wyatt Kuboff, is a rising star for the Tigers as he is making a significant impact as a junior middle linebacker on the defensive side of the ball and as a powerful fullback on offense. In the current season, he has already amassed an impressive 37 total tackles, showcasing his tenacity and ability to read the game effectively on defense. Additionally, Kuboff’s versatility shines through as he’s found the end zone twice with rushing touchdowns, underscoring his prowess as a dynamic offensive threat. With a promising future ahead, Wyatt Kuboff is undoubtedly a name to watch in the Mahoning Valley in the future.

CORTLAND OH- In the ever-evolving sport of high school sports, leadership and a winning tradition are often the cornerstones of success. For Lakeview High School’s junior outside hitter and captain, Molly Stuart, these qualities come naturally. Stuart, along with her dedicated teammates, has embraced the challenge of filling the shoes of a remarkable senior class that graduated last year, and she’s doing so with an unwavering work ethic and a fierce competitive spirit.

Lakeview’s volleyball program has a storied history of dominance, and Stuart has quickly become a symbol of the team’s winning tradition. As a junior, she seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role, embodying the very qualities that define Lakeview’s approach to the sport. Her commitment to excellence and determination to compete at the highest level have set the tone for the entire team.

One of the key factors in Stuart’s successful leadership is the valuable guidance she received from the talented seniors of the previous year. Their mentorship provided her with essential insights into what it means to lead on and off the court. Stuart readily acknowledges the impact these seniors had on her development, recognizing that their influence has played a crucial role in her journey.

On the court, Molly Stuart is a force to be reckoned with. She has seized the opportunity for increased playing time this season and has made the most of it. With 194 kills and 197 digs to her name, Stuart’s contributions to the team’s success are undeniable. Her impressive hitting percentage of .275, coupled with only 43 errors out of 549 attacks, speaks to her precision and effectiveness as an offensive player. Additionally, she ranks second on the team in serve receptions, with an average of just over 10 per match.

As Lakeview’s volleyball program looks toward the future, it does so with a young and promising roster. With no seniors currently on the team, Stuart’s leadership will continue to be a guiding light as they aim for another Northeast 8 (NE8) title. With Molly Stuart at the helm, Lakeview is well-prepared to maintain its winning tradition and leave a lasting mark on the world of high school volleyball.

EDGAR IS THE SET MASTER OF JEFFERSON

In the sport of volleyball, few positions require the level of precision, trust, and leadership as that of a setter. Helaina Edgar, the senior setter for the Jefferson volleyball team, not only embodies these qualities but has elevated them to an art form throughout her high school career. As she enters her senior season, the rewards for her unwavering dedication are finally manifesting.

One cannot talk about Edgar’s journey without highlighting her remarkable achievement of becoming Jefferson’s all-time leader in assists. With an impressive 1,778 assists under her belt and counting, Edgar has rightfully earned the title of the Jefferson assist Queen. Her ability to orchestrate the offense and provide her teammates with scoring opportunities is second to none.

At the heart of a setter’s success lies the crucial bond and trust between them and their hitters. Helaina Edgar has mastered this relationship, knowing precisely how to bring out the best in each of her teammates. Her innate understanding of their strengths and preferences on the court is a testament to her exceptional volleyball IQ. This trust and chemistry on the team are invaluable and contribute significantly to Jefferson’s success.

In her senior season, Edgar is once again demonstrating her prowess on the court, having already tallied an impressive 500 assists. What’s more remarkable is her trajectory, as she is on pace to surpass her junior season total, marking her best statistical performance yet. To achieve this, she’ll need 671 assists, a target that appears well within reach for the Jefferson star.

Helaina Edgar’s contributions have been vital to Jefferson’s success this season. The team currently boasts an impressive 14-2 record, positioning them among the top teams in the competitive CVC. If they continue their stellar performance, they have a real chance to surpass last season’s 19-win mark, setting the stage for a memorable senior year for their exceptional setter, Helaina Edgar.

KUHNS KEEPS UP FAMILY LEGACY

CANFIELD OH- In the dynamic world of high school volleyball, having an experienced and skilled leader can make all the difference. Sarah Kuhns, the senior setter and captain of the South Range volleyball team, embodies this role to perfection. With a wealth of varsity experience under her belt, Kuhns is the backbone of the team, offering invaluable guidance and expertise to her younger teammates.

Sarah’s journey in the sport began as a freshman, and over the years, she has accumulated an impressive number of varsity sets played, making her a true veteran of the game. Her extensive experience on the court serves as a calming presence for her teammates, especially the freshmen who are navigating the demands of high school volleyball for the first time. There isn’t a situation or challenge that Kuhns hasn’t faced, and her ability to lead by example is a cornerstone of the Raiders’ success.

One of Sarah’s remarkable achievements is her remarkable assist count. With 934 career assists and counting, she is closing in on the monumental 1,000-assist milestone, a testament to her exceptional setting skills. Her junior season, in particular, showcased her growth and impact as she tallied 300 assists, a personal best. As a senior, she’s on track to surpass this impressive record, solidifying her legacy as one of South Range’s premier setters.

Behind every successful athlete, there’s often a strong support system, and for Sarah, that includes her sister Mary. Mary, a former South Range volleyball standout, played a pivotal role in introducing Sarah to the sport. Her influence didn’t stop at the court’s edge; Mary continues to be a wellspring of guidance and advice, both in volleyball and life in general. Mary’s expertise as a libero during her playing years has undoubtedly contributed to Sarah’s development as a leader.

As a senior, Sarah Kuhns and her fellow senior teammates have set their sights on achieving new heights for the South Range volleyball program. With a solid record of 10 wins already in the season, the Raiders are poised for their best performance since 2019, a year when they reached the district championship with 15 wins. Sarah’s leadership, experience, and unwavering commitment to her team’s success make her a driving force in achieving these goals. South Range fans can undoubtedly look forward to an exciting season led by their remarkable captain, Sarah Kuhns.
