POLAND BOYS SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH BRIAN GARCAR

POLAsaND OH- Last season Poland was unstoppable in the regular seay son finishing the year without a single blemish on their record. Eleven seniors led that team through a year of adversity and uncertainty. Even though they graduated those eleven seniors, Poland returns plenty of talent and leadership. They have plenty of reasons to be optimistic in the 2021 season. Brian Garcar takes another year as the head coach leading the Bulldogs head first into another promising season.

Coach Garcar was kind enough to take the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point to talk about the upcoming season. He chatted with Anthony Hartwig about getting the players back to a normal summer, conditioning accountability, and much more. We expect great things for the Poland program and so should you! Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Brian Garcar.

HUBBARD BREAKS THROUGH WITH WALK OFF OVER POLAND

HUBBARD, Ohio

The Hubbard Lady Eagles (15-9) came into their matchup with the Poland Bulldogs (18-6) with three goals. Avenge their 13-0 loss to Poland earlier in the week, keep the Bulldogs from earning an outright NE8 championship, and gain momentum heading into their district semi-final appearance.

Starting the day off stranding a Poland baserunner at third, the Lady Eagles took a huge stride towards their objective when they plated 2 runs in the bottom half of the 1st.

Back-to-back singles to start the inning left runners on the corners and none away with Gillian Ryser coming to the plate. Continuing her impressive season, the senior 1st baseman hit aRBI single up the middle to score the inaugural run of the game. Sydney Bowser would later hit aRBI single of her own through the 6-5 hole to put the Eagles up 2.

Scoring would stall until the Bulldogs 4th inning got them back into the game. Bleak after 2 outs to start their half, Poland’s Mary Bryant would reach thanks to a walk. After stealing both second and third, Bryant then came across to score thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Katie McDonald.

McDonald, also the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, would be replaced on base by a courtesy runner, M Dinard. Dinard would reach 2nd thanks to a passed ball, steal 3rd, then eventually come across to score on another passed ball, tying the score at 2 all.

The Lady Eagles would respond with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After Kailah Gregory and Lexi Nadjusak would reach thanks to an error and a single, Gillian Ryser stepped up to the plate and delivered for the 2ndtime of the day, this time with a 2 RBI single up the middle.

With their outs running thin and trailing by 2, Poland would once again tie the game in the 6th. Back-to-back singles would have runners on andone away with Katie McDonald, already with one big hit on the day, heading to the plate. However, an 11 pitch at bat would end in a strikeout for the sophomore pitcher. Just as it seemed the Eagles would be able to escape with their lead intact, Gia Schiavone would poke one out to right field for a game tying 2 RBI single.

A scoreless bottom 6th followed by a scoreless top 7th left the Lady Eagles with a chance to walk things off in the bottom half of the inning. Singles by Haley Croyle and Sydney Bowser to start the innings saw runners on the corners with none away. Phobe Rusnak would head to the plate with a chance to be the hero. The freshman Rusnak would deliver with her bat but in a very unconventional way.

After watching the first pitch for a strike, the Poland catcher would attempt to throw down at the runner on 3rd. The catchers throw would never reach 3rd and instead hit off of Rusnak’s bat hanging over her shoulder while she was still in the box. The mistake would allow Croyle to score from third and give the Eagles a walk off victory, 5-4.

POLAND RETURNS THE FAVOR

POLAND, Ohio

Less than 24 hours removed form a back-and-forth game that resulted in a Hubbard walk off victory in extra innings, the Eagles and the Poland Bulldogs were at it again.

Trading blows through regulation, the two teams were knotted at 7 at the conclusion of the 7thinning and in need of extra innings for the second time in as many days.

A four-pitch walk for Andrew Frank kicked off the 8th inning. Frank would then steal second as well as third, bringing his total to 6 on the day and grabbing a spot on the state’s all-time list tied for 7th for stolen bases in a single game.

The Bulldogs opted not to throw to senior Evan Jarvis, putting him on first instead. After a pop out by Jake Hettrick, the Eagles had runners on second and third with two away. Needing to deliver, Hayden Fox stepped up to the plate and cashed in with a 2 RBI double.

Needing to respond to the Eagles 2 runs in the top half of the inning, Poland promptly started theirtrip to the dish with a runner reaching thanks to an error, a common theme for the day as the Hubbard defense would tally 7 errors in the ballgame.

A pop out followed by a strikeout left the Bulldogs with 2 away and in danger of losing in extras for the second game in a row. Anthony Perry would head to the plate for Poland and deliver, hitting a triple to right field and brining a runner across to score. Still in need of a run to extend the game, Mason Planey would hit an infield single to bring across Perry and tie the game once again at 9.

Two innings of scoreless baseball would extend the game into the 11th inning. A 1-2-3 effort from Hubbard in the top of the inning left Poland witha chance to walk it off in the bottom half.

After a ground out to start the inning, the next 3 Poland batters would reach base safely. With just one away, Michael Nittoli would hit one in the air to right field. While Hubbard’s right fielder Ryan Murray was able to make the catch, he was too deep to cut the runner down at home, giving Poland a walk-off sacrifice fly victory, 10-9.

EAGLES WIN A WILD ONE OVER POLAND

HUBBARD, Ohio

Andrew Frank had a huge game Tuesday night in the Hubbard Eagles (11-12) victory over the Poland Bulldogs (9-10).

The senior four sport athlete plays an integral part whenever he steps on the playing surface, whether it’s the gridiron, hardwood, track, or in tonight’s case, the diamond.

Frank would finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 separate highlight moments, both coming in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Trying to build on Hubbard’s 2 run lead at the time, Frank headed to the plate 1-1 on the day with a walk and two runs scored. The first batter of the inning, Frank hit one to the wall out in right field, allowing him to get all the way to third for a leadoff triple.

After the bases were loaded thanks to a hit by pitch and an intentional walk, the Eagles would pop out and strikeout, putting themselves in danger of stranding the bases loaded.

Sensing the danger, Frank took matters into his own hands. “Coach John John told me I was going to steal home” Frank said in his post-game interview. “I was just kind of waiting for it and Coach just yelled ‘now’ at me and I took off.” The gutsy move turned out to be required to get in therun, as the batter at the plate would eventually strike out.

Frank accounted for exactly half of the Eagles’runs on the day, scoring 3 times himself while also bringing across one, proving to be the deciding factor in their win, 8-7.
