POLAND SHAKES AWAY THE RUST

LIBERTY OH- It’s been over a week and a half since Poland has been able to be on the court. Wednesday night against Liberty, you could tell the rust had gathered. The Bulldogs did not start off the way they wanted to, but once they put it in gear they ran away with a 58-41 win.

The Leopards jumped out a 25-11 lead. Then, stretching from the second quarter to the third, the Bulldogs scored the next 26 points to go 37-25.

Liberty wasn’t out of gas yet though, they scratched and clawed the game back to a 41-35 Poland lead. But eventually the Bulldogs would impose their will and end the game on a 17-6 run.

Jackie Grisdale fought her way to a 25 point night. She did not hit a three, and went 9/10 from the free throw line. It was a physical game. The Bulldogs went to the line 29 times, and hit 20 shots. Connie Cougras added 9 points off the bench for Poland.

Liberty was down a few players but still put together a strong night. They were led by Aaliyah Foster with 18 points. Demi Watson also got in to double figures with 11.

Poland now focuses on a match up at home against South Range on Thursday. Both teams are undefeated in the NE8. Liberty also plays 2 games in 2 days as they’ll travel to LaBrae on  Thursday.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 5) WITH NICK BLANCH

POLAND OH- It has been another successful week for Poland as they continue their long win streak. The Bulldogs have won 14 in a row and sit at 14-1 heading in to the week. Poland’s last win was a 67-26 win over Hubbard. This week Poland has a late add of Liberty on Wednesday, and a huge matchup with South Range on Thursday.

Speaking of South Range, the Raiders head coach Jeff Fishel crashed the party this week and became a special guest. These two coaches have formed a strong friendship over the last two seasons and the mutual respect they have for one another is displayed in this week’s episode as both coaches preview Thursday’s clash.

POLAND LASHES OUT ON LEOPARDS

The host Poland Bulldogs defeated the Liberty Leopards by 15 points in a 59-44 victory.

Down by 5 after the 1st period the Bulldogs out-scored the Leopards 22-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 32-25 half-time advantage.

Andrew Centofanti and Brody Todd each dropped in 12 points to pace Poland.

Liberty’s James Weaver had 14 points for the Leopards.

Poland returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Hubbard, Liberty will return home to host Campbell on Tuesday.

POLAND BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KEN GRISDALE

POLAND OH- Earlier this week Ken Grisdale became just the 47th coach in the state of Ohio to get to 500 career wins. In his 28 years with the Bulldogs he has seen many players come and go, and has found a fountain of success. He has won the Mahoning Valley Coach’s Association Coach of the Year award 18 times. Poland has two wins over Jefferson under their belt this week and will look to honor their seniors with a win on Saturday night against Liberty on senior night.

Coach Grisdale took the time to call in to YSN’s Running Point on Friday to talk about his team. He chats with Ron Potesta about his 500th career win, his team’s state of mind at this point in the season, and much more. POLAND GIVES GRISDALE 500TH WIN

POLAND OH- Poland head coach Ken Grisdale came in to Tuesday night’s matchup against Jefferson needing just 1 win to eclipse 500 in his career. His team showed up, and showed out in a dominating 64-45 victory over Jefferson.

Ken Grisdale became the 47th coach in the state of Ohio to reach the 500 win mark. This is his 28th season at the helm of the Bulldogs, and in those 28 years he has had 18 MVCA Coach of the Year awards. His career record now stands at 500-155.

Ross Dedo had a strong night leading Poland with 18 points. Brody Todd contributed 12 points to the cause. Jack Fulton was also in double figures with 10.

Robert Ray paced the Falcons with 16 points. John Castrilla was right behind him with 14 points.

These two teams square off again on Friday this time up in Jefferson.

POLAND CLIPS EAGLES WINGS

HUBBARD OH- Poland looked to continue their dominance of the NE8 on Monday night as they traveled to Hubbard. They didn’t miss a step as they jumped on Hubbard from the start and kept their foot on the gas. Two Bulldogs scored above 15 points in their 67-26 rout of Hubbard. Poland is now 14-1 and 7-0 in the conference.

Jackie Grisdale scored 28 first half points and finished with 30 to lead the team. Connie Cougras hit a pair of threes on her way to 16 points.

Peytyn Slovesko paced the Eagles with 9 points.  Mary Frangos added 6 to the Eagle cause.

Poland is off until February 1st, when they will host Ursuline. Hubbard is scheduled to travel to South Range on Saturday.

GRISDALE BECOMES PROGRAMS SCORING LEADER IN POLAND WIN

POLAND OH- Jackie Grisdale came in to Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Champion needing 12 points to become the Lady Bulldogs all time leading scorer. It was also Poland’s last non conference game slated on the season. Grisdale and the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, beating the Golden Flashes.

Grisdale got her spot at the top of Poland’s scoring list early in the second quarter with a three from the corner. It gave her 14 points on the day, and 1,306 in her career. It officially broke the record set by Bella Gajdos during Jackie’s freshman season in 2018.

Grisdale led Poland with a total of 17 points on the night.  Morgan Kluchar added 7, while Katie McDonald scores 6. Eleven Poland players got in the stat sheet on the night.

Emma Gumant scores 9 points to lead the Flashes. Ava Howell also scores 7.

Poland will get back to league play Monday as they travel to Hubbard.

POLAND MOVES WIN STREAK TO TWELVE

JEFFERSON OH- Poland has now won twelve games in a row after making the long trip to Jefferson worth it with a 53-19 win over the Falcons. The Bulldogs also now have pushed their NE8 win streak to 34.

Poland had nine players get in the stat sheet. Jackie Grisdale led them with 19. Ella Harrell and Morgan Kluchar both added 6 to the cause.

Jefferson was led by Taylor Skinner with 10 points.

Poland has their final non conference game on Saturday as they host Champion.

TIGERS COME OUT ON TOP IN EPIC THRILLER

SPRINGFIELD OH- It took an extra 20 minutes of game time to decide a winner in Tuesday night’s marquee matchup between Springfield and Poland. By the end of it, both teams had multiple players foul out, and it came down to pure heart. Springfield eventually won the marathon of a game 79-70.

Springfield held a second half lead. It was seven points at its highest point. Poland slowly but surely chipped away at that lead and eventually tied it. They had a chance to win it in regulation but couldn’t get their shot to fall. Ironically, Poland had the final possession in four of the five overtimes, and just couldn’t put a shot in.

It was Adam Wharry and RJ Smith who finally broke the Tigers out in the fifth overtime both hitting massive threes to give the Tigers the breathing room it took to win.

Smith had a massive night for the Tigers leading with 31 points. Wharry wasn’t too far behind. He finished the night with 23 points.

Poland was led by Ross Dedo with 19 points. He eventually fouled out of the game. Andrew Centofanti was also in double figures with 16 points. Michael Gordon supplied 10 big points off the bench.

Springfield will try to carry the momentum back in to league play as they matchup at Jackson Milton on Friday. Poland also gets back to league play as they host Girard on Friday.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3) WITH NICK BLANCH

POLAND OH- The Lady Bulldogs continue to impress this season. After losing their first game of the season to Salem, Poland has won ten in a row and hold a record of 11-1. They have also extended their dominant record inside the NE8 over the last three seasons to 33-0. Poland is coming off a 53-36 win over Boardman on Saturday, and looks ahead to a game against Jefferson on Thursday.

Head coach Nick Blanch took the time to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about his program. They discuss the league being back to full force, his coaching staff, and much more.
