GIRARD WINS SEASON SERIES WITH BULLDOGS AND ADVANCES

GIRARD OH- This first round volleyball match up on Wednesday saw the third meeting this season between Girard and Poland. The two teams split the regular season matches, but it was Girard who came out on top to advance in the tournament. The Indians took the match in four sets (25-14 22-25 25-14 25-17).

Bree Latell was on fire tonight for the Indians. The freshman finished with a season-high 24 kills. She completed a double double with 10 digs to go along with her season high kill total. Lauren Pallone also recorded a double double with 18 kills, and 22 digs. Ali Durkin set up 27 assists to lead the team.

Poland was led by Morgan Kluchar with 9 kills. She also played good net defense with 3 blocks. Alyssa Glaros had a wonderful defensive day with 32 digs. Maddie Wess set up 9 assists.

Girard moves on to the sectional finals on Saturday where they’ll host Streetsboro, the eleven seed in the bracket. That match is set to start at 4:00.

CALLING COLOSIMO

POLAND, OH- The Poland Pocket Knife, Christian Colosimo has been called every name in the book.  His last name alone has garnered 34 different renditions.

(It’s pronounced CALL-IS-SEE-MO, by the way.)

The point is, the one name he’s never been called, or will ever be called- is an underachiever.  Colosimo busts his tail and knows every position on the field because he has to.  All of that as well as being a multi-sport athlete that carries a 3.85 GPA in the classroom makes him a tough out for any opponent, and at the top of every coach’s wishlist.

Fresh off one of the biggest comebacks in Poland Playoff history, we sat down with the Junior to discuss the year, as well as the closeness of the Poland team.

This week’s Poland Player Profile is: Calling Colosimo

POLAND COMES BACK AND ESCAPES QUAKERS UPSET BID

POLAND, Ohio –

Sophomore quarterback, Jackson Johnson, and the Salem offense needed no time at all to get going against what has been regarded as one of the top defenses in the area. In less than 4 minutes, Johnson had his first touchdown pass of the game to junior receiver, Blaize Exline.

The offense showed it was alive and the defense fed off their enthusiasm, forcing the Bulldogs to go three and out on their first drive of the game. Following a pair of drives that would stall out, Salem would get the ball back on their own 3-yard line.

Despite having their backs against the wall, the Quakers still looked to be aggressive. In under 3 minutes, Salem was able to go 97 yards and extend their lead to 14, thanks to a great catch and run from junior receiver, Austin Sinkovich.

Up two scores on the defending Region 13 winner, Salem reached into their bag of tricks and pulled out an onside kick. The Quakes would recover, and had the Bulldogs on the ropes, and just 39 seconds later, Salem was holding a 21-0 lead, curtesy of Johnson’s third touchdown pass of the half.

Dazed and confused from the Quakers right hook, Coach Ryan Williams threw a wrinkle in hisBulldogs offense. Taking over at quarterback would be 6 foot 1, 220-pound fullback, Christian Colosimo. With Colosimo at the helm in their wildcat formation, Poland was methodically marching down the field until Colosimo took the air out of the stadium with a 57-yard bomb to senior Andrew Centofani, closing the Salem lead to just 15.

After a pair of stops from both defenses, Salem would take over in their own territory with a little over a minute remaining in the half. Trying to keep their aggressiveness, Salem took Johnson on a designed quarterback run on the first play of the drive, but a great tackle by Poland’s Peyton Mrakovich knocked the ball loose and allowed the Bulldogs to take over in Salem territory.

Looking to take all the momentum into the locker room, Poland would go for it on 4th and goal from the Salem 2-yard line, but Colosimo would lose control of the ball diving across the goal line, leaving the score at 21-6 going into the half.

Although their attempt to close the lead to one score heading into the locker room was unsuccessful, Poland picked up right where they had left off in the second half of work. The Bulldogs took 4 minutes and 50 seconds off the clock with their first drive of the second half. Great runs by junior quarterback, Jack Fulton, highlighted the Poland drive that was eventually capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from Mrakovich, a failed two-point conversion left the score at 21-12.

With the offense coming into its own, the Bulldog defense made sure they wouldn’t be left behind, keeping the Quakers out of the endzone and giving their offense the ball back. After a huge run by Fulton into Quaker territory, the Bulldogs would close the gap even more with Colosimo’s second touchdown of the night, this time from 11 yards out on the ground.

After another failed Quaker drive, Poland would get the ball back in their own territory with under 8 minutes remaining. Trailing by a field goal, the Poland offense went to work. An end around run by Andrew Centofanti got the Bulldogs into Salem territory, then impressive runs by Colosimo and Fulton had the Bulldogs into the endzone for their 24th unanswered point of the night.

Salem’s final drive of the night spelt more of the same for the Quakes. Poland had weathered the Quaker storm early, and made some key adjustments coming out of the half to get in the face of and contain the Salem dual-threat quarterback.

UP NEXT

Poland: The Bulldogs will play host to the Chagrin Falls Tigers (5-2), who were automatically advanced into the next round following a forced cancellation from Field.

Salem: Though there is no game scheduled for next week as of now, the Quakers still have matchups against East Liverpool (4-4) and United (5-2) in the coming weeks.

POLAND TAKES BIG STEP AGAINST UNITED

POLAND OH- If you looked at the records coming in to Monday night in the match between United and Poland, you’d think it might be a mismatch. Then, if you also knew Poland was down two starters, you might not give the Bulldogs a shot. Well, Poland took a huge step in the growth of their program with a gritty five set victory (25-15 23-25 25-16 18-25 15-13).

United took some time to find a rhythm. The first set was full of out of system points, and attack errors. Poland took advantage of the unsteady Eagles and dominated set 1.

The Eagles regrouped however, it was a much cleaner set two, but the Bulldogs has momentum. Kenzie Szolek had a great set swinging from the left side, and the back row. Sarah Forsyth also took some points from the right. United was up to the test as they started to get their big hitter Tori Tschappatt involved in the offense. They scrapped to a two point victory in set two.

The story of the third set was front row adjustments by Poland. Their blocks started to consistently get their hands on the Eagles swings. They either blocked the ball, or got enough of it to make life easier on their back row. When United tried to adjust to the big blocking, more attack errors followed. Poland would take another lopsided set 25-16.

United finally rolled on all cylinders in the fourth set when they needed it to keep the match alive. The started to get consistent contributions from multiple spots on the floor, making it much harder for the Bulldogs block to anticipate the United offense. United won their best played set of the night 25-18.

By the fifth set both teams had adjusted multiple times in the match. Both teams looked sharp, and it made for a thrilling finale. Down 11-8, Poland rattled off four in a row to take a 12-11 lead. Both teams traded points back and forth, until Poland finally made the push to clinch the match 15-13.

Lexi Kalicatzaros was a problem for the Eagles totaling 17 kills on the night. Maddie Wess led the way setting up 9 assists. Alyssa Glaros patrolled the back row leading the Bulldogs with 26 digs. Katie McDonald was big stepping up with 5 blocks. Sophia Dedo served 4 aces.

United was led by Tschappatt who finished with a double double with 11 kills, 12 digs, and 2 blocks. Taylor Cope was also strong in the middle, collecting 10 kills. Haley Dees also grabbed a double double with 33 assists, and 12 digs. Madison Boyle led the defense with 23 digs.

Poland will try to use this momentum and carry it to Girard on Tuesday. United will get back to league play on Tuesday as they host Leetonia.
