By Eric Hughes

NEW CASTLE OH- Mohawk defeats South Range, 62-50, to improve to 2-3 on the young season.

LADY RAIDERS HUSTLE TO FIRST WIN

CANFIELD, OH- After starting the season with three straight losses, the South Range Lady Raiders knew it would take more effort and energy to accomplish what they wanted this season, and they showed exactly that on Thursday night with at 54-40 victory over Struthers.

In a matchup riddled with fouls and turnovers, South Range was able to find a rhythm in their effort- and it was enough to seal their first victory of the season.

The Lady Raider seniors had a lot to do with it, veteran point guard Devin Sauerwein provided a spark throughout the contest with her speed and ball-handling, but also bucketed 13 to lead the burgundy and gold.  Madi Dado showed poise and determination in her leadership with 9 points and great displays of effort on both sides of the court.  Gwen Lowry showcased her skills to the tune of 12 points, and Sydney Penick had 6.  Other scorers for South Range included Ceci Foster (2) Sophia Lucente (3) and Taylor Dado with 9 points, respectively.

Struthers had a great game plan for South Range, and that was to spread out their scorers, which they did.  Offensively, Katelyn Kimble led the way with 11, and was able to find pockets of scoring from Gianna Mark (8), Emma Morris and Ava Croyle (5), Ava Hall (4), and Taiya Baraka (3).

South Range records their first victory of the season and is now 1-3, while Struthers falls to 1-4 overall.

RANGE ROUTES GIRARD AT HOME

CANFIELD, OH- On the opening night in the NE8 Play, South Range quickly were able to point out how much difference a year could make in a 63-38 victory over conference rival, Girard.

The biggest change was senior Dylan Turvey’s willingness and determination to establish himself as a post player for Pat Carden’s offense.  South Range, admittedly undersized relied heavily on their game going inside-out on Tuesday night.  Turvey scored 15 points, which all came in the paint or at the line.  Leading all scorers was Landon Moore with 22 points, Luke Rohan posted 9 points for the Raiders as well.

The veteran presence shined through for South Range as there were multiple breakout passes up the floor resulting in points and odd-man advantages for the Raiders that kept the Indians on their heels throughout the contest.

Ahmad Curd’s 16 points kept South Range honest throughout the night, but it was Nick Rafferty’s sharpshooting on the outside that gave Girard a chance in the early going before finishing with nine points.  Dom Phillips posted seven points for the Indians as well.

With the victory, South Range goes to 3-1 on the year (1-0) and Girard is left still looking for their first victory at 0-3.

INDIANS START FAST IN THE NE8

By Matt Maher

Girard, OH – What a way for Girard to open up conference play against South Rnage! Coming off of a 47-21 victory over Jefferson, Girard kept the momentum going with another big win, putting up 34 points to South Ranges 19.

The first quarter saw Girard score first but South Range looked confident and found a 6-4 lead early on. It would take one timeout for Girard to figure out what needed to be done and would respond with eight more points and lead the quarter 12-6. Mia Malito found her first four points of the game as did Mackenzee White. Gwen Lowry would lead The Raiders with four points in the quarter.

Girards offense stayed consistent in the second putting up eight combined but the real story of the quarter was The Indians defense! Everyone found themselves involved in suppressing the Raiders offense and forcing them to take less than desirable shots. As a result of this brick wall defense The Raiders would only find two points in the quarter scored by Sophia Lucente. The Indians would also have a lone scorer but that was enough as Malito would catch fire and scorch her way to eight points.

The third was almost identical to the second, great defensive coverage from the Indians led to only three points, a field goal for Lucente and one of two free throws made by Devin Sauerwein. Offense for Girard yielded better results as Malito was not the lone scorer this time, although she did find herself with six more points, White would connect for a 2-pointer and Ally Gassman would put in a bucket accompanied by a foul where she would complete the three point play at the line.

South Range entered the fourth quarter looking like a team down 31-11 but after a series of timeouts from both sides the Raiders would start to click and found themselves in their highest scoring quarter of the night. Sydney Penick was able to find four points and Ceci Foster got herself on the board with two. Along with two free throws made by different player the Raiders would find themselves eight points in the quarter and looked like they could’ve found more if they hadn’t found their second wind so late. The Raiders defense also showed up in a huge way by only allowing three points which were scored off of the only made 3-pointer of the night courtesy of Caylee Wilkes.

While South Range found a surge of energy in the fourth they still had to face a very confident Girard defense and as a result would go on to lose 34-19 to the Indians. Mia Malito would lead all scorers with 18 points on the night while Mackenzee White would finish with six and both Wilkes and Gassman would find five. The Raiders were led by Sydney Penick with six points and Gwen Lowry with five. The Raiders move to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Northeast 8 and are back in action on December 14th when they host Struthers at 6:15PM and The Indians move to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference and will travel to Poland on December 14th, that game tips off at 7PM.

By Noah Doughty

CANFIELD OH- It was a thrilling game up until the end as a last second basket gave South Range a 48-46 win over Chaney.

Landon Moore set the tone early scoring the first 14 points for South Range and 20 of their 33 first half points giving them a nine point lead at the half. However Chaney’s defensive adjustments caused problems for the Raiders and Moore only scored 2 points in the second and as a team the Raiders had a 3 point 3rd quarter. And after struggling from behind the arc Chaney made some clutch 3 pointers including one by Asvonte Mickel tying 3 with 9.8 seconds remaining. However South Range was able to run the court and get a quick 2 leaving Chaney not enough time to respond.

Landon Moore finished with 22 points for the Raiders. Jeshawn Holcomb had 13 points for the Cowboys and Austin Brown contributed 11 points.
