CLIPPERS SHOOT PAST SOUTHERN

COLUMBIANA OH- Columbiana seized control of the game with a commanding second quarter, propelling them to a 72-49 victory over Southern in an EOAC matchup on Tuesday. The Clippers dominated the second quarter, outscoring Southern 21-8, establishing a lead they maintained throughout the game.

Columbiana’s scoring efforts were led by Seth Struharick, who contributed 23 points, followed by Maddox Brown with 15 points. Devin Daugherty added 9 points, while Ian Less chipped in 7 points for the Clippers.

Despite the defeat, Southern showcased a standout performance from Markell Smith, who tallied an impressive 34 points, securing the game-high total for the night.

SOUTHERN SURVIVES A SCARE BY THE BEARS

SALINEVILLE OH- Southern kicked off the new basketball season with an intense EOAC battle against Leetonia, securing a hard-fought victory with a final score of 67-65. Despite the Bears facing challenges in the league the previous season, they presented a formidable challenge for Southern, making the contest a closely contested affair.

Markell Smith led Southern’s scoring effort with 17 points, complemented by contributions from Noah Chase with 13 points, Mason Pitts adding 11 points, Yago Alonso chipping in 9 points, and Jacob McCurdy with 7 points. The collective effort showcased Southern’s ability to respond to challenges and secure a crucial win.

Leetonia, led by Carson Brock’s impressive game-high 29 points, demonstrated resilience throughout the game. CJ Faulkner contributed 17 points, and Ashbee Merritt added 6 points. The spirited competition between Southern and Leetonia highlighted the competitive nature of the EOAC.

Southern’s ability to withstand the Bears’ challenge sets a positive tone for the new season. As they navigate the basketball campaign, the team looks to build on this hard-fought victory.

SOUTHERN SURGES IN THE FINAL FRAME TO GET THEIR FIRST WIN

SALINEVILLE OH- In a compelling season opener, Southern secured a strong home win against East Liverpool with a final score of 56-50. The game was closely contested throughout, with Southern trailing by 2 at halftime and 3 after the 3rd Quarter. However, a decisive final frame, where Southern outscored their opponents 19-10, sealed the victory.

Southern’s dynamic duo of Ashley Shroades and Alyssa Shroades led the charge with impressive performances, contributing 22 and 20 points, respectively. MaKenna Jones and Josie Stanley also made valuable contributions with 7 points each.

On the East Liverpool side, Kenzie Headley led the scoring with 15 points, followed by Dacianelle Andrews with 10 points and Kenzie Walker with 7 points.

Southern will now transition into league play, facing Leetonia on Thursday, while East Liverpool looks ahead to their rivalry game against Beaver Local on the same day.

SOUTHERN STRIKES FAST IN WEEK TEN

Southern’s Week 10 showdown at home against Leetonia turned into an unrelenting display of dominance as they secured a commanding 47-0 victory.

The first quarter set the stage for Southern’s triumph, with a series of rapid touchdowns. Timmy Potts initiated the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving Southern an early 7-0 lead just 10 minutes and 36 seconds into the game. Ayden Frischkorn added to the onslaught, breaking free for a 10-yard touchdown run at 9:31. Ryan Exline’s 5-yard touchdown run, although the PAT was blocked, stretched the lead to 20-0 with 5:27 left in the first quarter. Landen Heffner then joined the party, with a 15-yard touchdown run and an explosive 55-yard touchdown dash, bringing the score to 33-0 and concluding a dominant first quarter.

Heffner was far from finished, adding a 39-yard touchdown run with 3:19 left in the second quarter. Southern continued their dominance into the third quarter when Colton Spahlinger sealed the game with a 3-yard touchdown run, resulting in the final score of 47-0.

On the Leetonia side, Cameron Roller’s performance was a bright spot, as he set a program single-season tackle record with an impressive total of 106 tackles.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS SHINE ON SOUTHERN

LIBERTY OH- In an eagerly anticipated Saturday night showdown, Southern sought revenge against Valley Christian, who had clinched the EOAC title over them the previous season. The Indians came through with a thrilling 46-36 win in front of a prime-time audience.

The first quarter set the stage for Southern’s offensive fireworks. Landen Heffner kicked things off with a 35-yard touchdown run, giving the Indians an early 6-0 lead with 9:18 on the clock. Southern kept the momentum going as Logan Mettenburger contributed with a 7-yard touchdown run, extending their lead to 12-0 at 1:31.

In the second quarter, Valley Christian made an effort to claw back into the game. Timmy Potts connected with Markell Smith on a 13-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 12-6 with 8:17 left. However, Southern responded swiftly, with Tommy Potts executing a 1-yard quarterback sneak, pushing their lead to 26-6 with 4:31 remaining.

Valley Christian managed to find the end zone before the half as Ike Lake executed a 9-yard quarterback run, making it 26-12 with just 35 seconds left on the clock.

The third quarter featured a safety, adding two points to Southern’s lead, now at 28-12. A pivotal moment came when Valley Christian returned an interception for a touchdown, closing the gap to 28-20 with 2:10 left in the quarter.

As the fourth quarter began, Heffner scored his second touchdown of the night with a 1-yard run, extending Southern’s lead to 34-20 with 10:00 remaining. Valley Christian wasn’t ready to concede, as Ahmire Dixon returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, making it a 34-22 game.

Southern continued to find the end zone with a 60-yard touchdown run, increasing their lead to 40-22. Valley Christian responded with another kickoff return for a touchdown by Dixon, cutting the deficit to 40-28.

However, Southern put the game out of reach with Frank Shagnot’s 50-yard touchdown run, securing a 46-28 lead with 7:36 left. Valley Christian managed one more trick play, a flea-flicker that resulted in a 50-yard touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

SOUTHERN ENDS TOUGH TIMES AGAINST WELLSVILLE

SALINEVILLE OH- In a thrilling five-set showdown, Southern secured a remarkable victory over Wellsville with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 13-25, 30-28, and 15-12. This triumph marked a significant turning point for Southern, ending a long-standing losing streak against Wellsville and halting the latter’s remarkable run of consecutive titles.

Southern, with a record of 15-3 (10-3), displayed tremendous determination and resilience throughout the match. Ashley Shroades was a force to be reckoned with, recording a remarkable 25 kills, showcasing her prowess as an offensive powerhouse.

Rylee Mellott orchestrated the offense brilliantly, contributing 40 assists to her team’s victory. Her precise setting and decision-making were instrumental in Southern’s success.

Hannah Reynolds proved to be a formidable presence at the net, tallying 12 kills and an impressive 8 blocks. Her defensive prowess and ability to thwart Wellsville’s attacks were crucial in the match.

Kennedy Lewis anchored the defense with 18 digs, ensuring that Wellsville’s offensive onslaught was met with solid resistance.

This victory not only snapped Southern’s 11-game losing streak against Wellsville but also brought an end to Wellsville’s remarkable five-year streak of consecutive titles in the EOAC.

On the Wellsville side, Presley Stokes led the charge with an incredible 31 kills, displaying her dominance as an offensive force. Bella Poppelriter contributed 7 kills and 2 aces, while Makenzie Nixon orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and added 7 kills of her own.

Southern looks to build on this momentum as they face United at home next, while Wellsville aims to rebound in their upcoming match against Columbiana at home.

SOUTHERN MAPS OUT DOMINATION ON THE ROAD

COLUMBIANA OH- In a showdown of conference rivals, Southern unleashed a powerful display of football prowess, imposing their will on the field and securing an impressive 51-21 victory over Columbiana. The game featured thrilling moments and standout performances that left a lasting impression on fans.

The 1st quarter began with Columbiana drawing first blood as Kian Hartley powered through with a 3-yard touchdown run, complemented by Aidan Radcliff’s successful PAT, putting them ahead 7-0. However, Southern quickly responded with a lightning-fast Landen Heffner, who returned the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The PAT by Yargo was good, leveling the score at 7-7. Columbiana wasn’t to be outdone, as Dylan Bregard caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Liam Surgenavic, followed by Radcliff’s successful PAT, giving them a 14-7 lead.

The 2nd quarter continued to showcase the teams’ offensive prowess. Southern’s Landen Heffner made his presence felt with a 12-yard touchdown run, accompanied by a successful PAT by Yargo, tying the game at 14-14. Columbiana answered with a spectacular 82-yard touchdown run by Liam Surgenavic, with Radcliff adding the PAT, putting them back in the lead at 21-14. However, Southern’s Ryan Exline responded swiftly with a 17-yard touchdown run and a successful 2-point conversion, making it Southern 22, Columbiana 21.

The 3rd quarter saw Southern continuing their offensive onslaught. Landen Heffner punched in another touchdown with a 12-yard run, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, extending Southern’s lead to 30-21. The Southern defense also made its mark with Timmy Potts returning a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown, complemented by Yargo’s PAT, making it 37-21. Potts wasn’t finished, adding a 1-yard touchdown run, although the conversion attempt failed, setting the score at 43-21. Southern’s Landen Heffner capped off his outstanding performance with a 7-yard touchdown run, and Ryan Exline added a 2-point conversion, sealing the dominant victory at Southern 51, Columbiana 21.

In the end, Southern left an indelible mark with their powerful performance, showcasing their prowess on the field. The final score of 51-21 reflected their dominance in the game, and they secured an important victory over their conference rival, Columbiana.

CLIPPERS GET ONE STEP CLOSER

COLUMBIANA OH- In a high-stakes showdown on the road, the Columbiana volleyball team demonstrated their determination and skill, inching one step closer to an EOAC title with a hard-fought sweep of Southern. The closely contested sets ended with scores of 25-21, 25-23, and an exhilarating 27-25, highlighting the relentless spirit of both teams.

Ellie Jackson was the star of the night for Columbiana, delivering an awe-inspiring triple-double performance. With 11 kills, 15 assists, and an incredible 15 digs, Jackson showcased her versatility and ability to impact every facet of the game. Her contributions were instrumental in securing the victory for her team.

Columbiana’s formidable presence at the net was evident, with Kelsey Cameron recording 6 kills and 4 crucial blocks. Landry Smith added 7 kills and 2 blocks to the team’s impressive offensive arsenal.

Ava Heinrich demonstrated her all-around skills with 15 digs, 3 aces, and 3 assists. Her consistency on defense and precision from the service line were pivotal in the team’s success. Maryn Hepler contributed 5 kills, 16 digs, 2 assists, and 2 aces, emphasizing her versatility and impact in multiple areas of the game.
