SALINEVILLE OH- It was all set up on Friday for United to have a chance to compete for an EOAC title in Week 6 against Leetonia, but Southern made them pump the breaks, as they jumped ahead early and never let go. The Indians ended United’s undefeated hopes with a 34-21 win in Week 5.

It was the ground game for the Indians doing most of the damage. They ran for 305 yards on 44 carries. Brad Sloan had 180 yards on 12 carries for Southern. Josh Pratt was efficient through the air when they needed him. He went 5-9 with 79 yards and a TD.

BLUE DEVILS RUN OUT OF GAS; FALL TO SOUTHERN

LISBON, OH – Last time these two teams met, the Southern Indians emerged victorious with a 64-50 win down in Salineville. The Blue Devils came into this game with plenty of things to be fighting for, such as, a revenge game against Southern, a tie for at least second place in the EOAC standings, and also improving their own record for seeding purposes when the records are submitted for voting for the statewide playoffs at the end of the season. Unfortunately for the Lisbon Blue Devils, they ran out of gas just a little too early in the fourth quarter as Southern held on to leave Lisbon victorious, 52-44, on Friday night.

Southern was led by Cameren Grodhaus who finished with 22 points and Jayce Sloan with 9 points.

The Lisbon Blue Devils were led by Ryan McCullough with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, as well as, Blayne Brownfield with 6 points and 9 rebounds. Michael Davis also chipped in 8 points.

Up next for Lisbon (6-9) is another tough EOAC test, as the Blue Devils will travel down to Wellsville to take on the Tigers on Tuesday, January 28th.

COLUMBIANA, OH – Crestview was coming off their first win of the season after beating Newton Falls but this week, the Rebels ran into a powerful Southern Indians run offense that controlled the game for most of the night. Crestview would make it interesting in the second half trimming Southern’s lead by 10 but the Indians would prove too much. The Indians would remain unbeaten with a 41-24 victory.

The Rebels got on the board first with a 20 yard Field Goal by Kicker Brandon Yanssens to give them the lead 3-0. SOUTHERN SNEAKS BY CLIPPERS, FRANKEN CLAIMS RECORD

COLUMBIANA, OH- Southern Local played keep away all night long and ground out a 26-21 victory over Columbiana here Friday night. The Indians were able to control the line of scrimmage and the clock scoring on three long drives in the first half, the last of which was 95 yards chewing up eight minutes to take an 18-7 lead into the locker room. They limited the potent Clipper offense to just two possessions in the half. Clippers actually took a 7-6 lead in the first quarter when Jakob Cross found Chase Franken on a crossing pattern which Franken took down the sideline for his first of two touchdown receptions.

Franken caught another TD on the Clippers first possession of the third quarter, which made him Columbiana’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 23. It was a record held by former Clipper great Troy Berdine for 35 years. But it wasn’t enough as Rich Wright’s Indians converted on six fourth downs on the evening, two of which resulted in touchdowns. Cam Grodhaus hauled in a pass that was deflected high in the air before he was able to make a twisting catch as he hit paydirt with :06 to play in the first half. Then, on 4th and goal from the 15, Jayce Sloan fired a strike to Bradley Sloan who was able to secure it just across the goal line as he was hit to the ground.

It was that kind of night for the Clippers. Coach Spaite’s crew responded well after the shellacking at the hands of Springfield last week. But a few fortuitous bounces went the way of the Indians on this night leading to defeat. Southern was able to maintain possession despite
fumbling three times before the Groudhaus catch just ahead of intermission. Grodhaus, Dylan Milhoan, and the two Sloans shared the load for the Indians. Franken had 7 catches for 170 yards. Cross threw three TDs, the last of which was a 16-yarder to Joey Bable who refused to go down carrying three Indians into the end zone from the five with 2:47 to play.

The Clippers(1-3) look to bounce back hosting Leetonia(3-1) next week. As usual, you can catch the action on YSNLive.com.

COLUMBIANA RECEIVES SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

COLUMBIANA, OH-  After a gift-wrapped run in the first inning, the Columbiana Clippers (2-1) scored nine unanswered runs to defeat the Southern Local Indians 9-1 here at Firestone Park Tuesday afternoon.

Chase Franken went the distance on the hill, which was a six-inning affair due to darkness.   He struck out 15 and walked two while scattering five hits. Southern’s leadoff batter, Smalley, reached on a passed ball and scored on a dropped popup in the first for the lone Indians run.

The Clippers also took advantage of shaky defense in the first scoring two runs on three ground balls in the infield.  After getting two quick outs in the second, starter Timmy West looked to settle in, but a two-strike single by Seth Ross and a Ryan Fahs walk set the plate for a two-run triple by Franken giving the Clips a 4-1 lead after two.  Fahs then broke it open with a three-run double in the fifth. Ross, Fahs, and Zach Pleska had multiple hit games for the Clippers. Utt had two hits for the Indians.
