SOUTHERN CLIPS THE EAGLES

SALINEVILLE OH- It was a terrific night for Southern volleyball as they battled one of the scrappiest teams in the EOAC, and came out on top. It was a fight like it always is with United, but Southern took it in four sets.  (28-26 25-23 25-21 25-18)

Ashley Shroades led the Indians offense with a monster night. She totaled 20 kills.  Hannah Reynolds was also in double figures with 10 kills.  Aleah Bach was a big contributor as well with 8 kills. Rylee Mellott set up the offense well as she continues to rack in assists. She finished with 42.  Kya McCully led the defense with 10 digs.

Zoee Smith earned a double double for United with 12 kills, and 13 digs.  Taylor Cope had a nice night as well, she finished with 10 kills for the Eagles.  Maddie Lucas also managed a double double on the night with 26 assists, and 11 digs.

Southern moves on to travel to East Palestine on Thursday. United will try to bounce back Thursday as they host Wellsville.

SOUTHERN HAS BIG TEST ON THE HORIZON

LEETONIA, OH- The Southern Local Indians came into week 7 against Leetonia on an absolute roll like no other, looking to not only keep that going, but they also were looking to secure their spot in the EOAC championship game. Southern’s juggernaut offense was too much for the Bears as Southern took a demanding victory, 48-6.

Southern did not need much time to get on the board and control of the game thanks to Wyatt Morris who started the game off with a 70-yard rushing touchdown. Morris wasn’t the only Indian who contributed on offense. Within the first quarter, Southern put up 280 yards with six different players scoring touchdowns. Ryan Exline found Markell Smith on a 52-yard pass. Exline punched it in with a sneak on the 1-yard line. Colton Soukup found the endzone on a 53-yard run, Cooper Edmiston added a 35-yard rushing TD and Noah Perfetto scored from 8 yards out. In total from the first half, Southern put up 369 total yards on 17 plays and ran for 317 yards.

Looking forward, Southern will move to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in the EOAC as they are tied with Valley Christian for first. The Indians will host the undefeated Eagles Friday night in the EOAC championship game. Both teams look to get a championship under their belt and momentum leading up to playoffs. CLIPPERS GET REVENGE ON SOUTHERN

COLUMBIANA OH- It wasn’t a happy trip for the Clippers to Salineville the last time Columbiana and Southern Local met on the volleyball floor. Now, with plenty of games under the belt since then the two teams met up again. This time the venue was Columbiana, and the Clippers enjoyed some home cooking. Columbiana dominates the final set of a five set thriller to earn the victory.  (25-21 27-29 25-19 23-25 15-1)

Ellie Jackson earned another double double on the season with 13 kills, 24 digs, and 23 assists.  She wasn’t the only one as Cameron Perkins put together a triple double as well going for 11 kills, 27 digs, and 19 assists.  Ava Heinrich led the Clippers offense with 15 kills, and used 18 digs to complete a double double.

Southern was led by Ashley Shroades with 22 kills on the night.  Aleah Bach was also in double figure kills with 11.  Rylee Mellott had a historic night in setting. She finished with 62 assists, which ranks 10th best in OHSAA history for assists in a match.  No one has had more than 62 assists in a match since 2015, according to the OHSAA record book.  Kyla McCulley led the defense with 14 digs.

Columbiana looks to build on their winning ways on Thursday as they host Lisbon. Southern has to bounce back quick as they square off with league leading Wellsville on Wednesday.

SOUTHERN CLAIMS BIG WIN OVER WELLSVILLE

SALINEVILLE, OH- Southern Local played host to Wellsville on a night that had a chill in the air, and the hospitality had a bit of the same in a 64-6 trouncing of the Tigers.

Let’s not forget that this rivalry goes back generations, and Southern emphatically made a point in the conference with 421 yards of offense while only allowing 66 total yards on defense.

It didn’t take long for Southern to get on the board with Wyatt Morris cruising in from 24 yards out to get things started.  The next Wellsville possession, Gavin Kountz’s pass was intercepted by Cameron Sloan and was taken back to the house to make the score 14-0.  The next possession, the Indians called on the Big Dog of the Valley winner again, and Morris scampered in from 40 yards away to make it a 22-0 affair.  The final score of the quarter would come from Noah Perfetto from the 4-yard line to put the Indians up 30-0.

The scoring in the second frame started with Wellsville when Gavin Kountz found Charlie Wilson in the back of the endzone for the Tiger’s only score of the night.

Southern would resume their push with Timmy Potts keeping the rock on a QB draw to put the Indians up 38-6.  The next drive for Wellsville, Kountz’ pass was intended for Eddie Stock, and was picked by Aiden Spahlinger and taken back for a score.  On the next offensive drive, Southern would get Colton Soukup involved with a connection from Potts on a 59-yard strike for 6, putting Southern up 51-6 with 3:57 to go in the half.

In the second half on a running clock, Southern would continue to showcase their weapons when Landen Heffner punched one in from 25 yards out, and Brody Brown would finalize the scoring on a 15 yard rush that found paydirt as well.

The Indians finished with 348 yards on the ground, with Wyatt Morris leading the way to 147 yards on 10 attempts with two scores.  Brody Brown toted the rock 9 times for 72 yards and a tuddy.  Landen Heffner had 4 carries for 38 stripes and a score, while Ryan Exline had 4 chances with 37 yards.

For Wellsville, Kasen Ramsey had six touches in the backfield for 25 yards to lead the Tigers.  Eddie Stock had one catch for 19 yards to lead the orange and black in receiving yards.

SOUTHERN TAKES CLIPPERS BEST PUNCH

SALINEVILLE, OH- Every once and awhile you will witness a game that looks like a blowout on the scoreboard, but on the field it felt a lot closer than a blowout. That is exactly how the Southern and Columbiana game felt Friday night as the Idians hosted the Clippers and came away with a 51-14 victory.

Southern came out the gate quick and hot, scoring on their first two drives. Columbiana would eventually get some momentum with an interception from Parker Bush and followed that up with a touchdown by Jesse Szmara to make it 16-7. That momentum would not last long as Southern’s Colton Soukup found a hole in the Clippers defense and took one to the house to give the Indians a 24-7 lead at the break.

Columbiana forced a switch in the roles by coming out of the break hot and scoring early to make it 24-14 early in the third. That was the last time the Clippers would find the endzone as it was all Southern thanks to Soukup’s amazing grab for a 84-yard pick-six. After that momentum swing, the Indians would not look back and separated themselves from the Clippers more later in the second half and would walk away with the win.

Southern moves to 5-0 on the season as they will host Wellsville Friday night. Columbiana moves to 0-4 on the season as they will travel to United on Friday.

MELLOTT MAKES HER MILESTONE MOMENT

SALINEVILLE OH- Southern junior Rylee Mellott has done something amazing. She has already reached 1,000 career assists. On Monday night, she took to the floor and made her milestone moment in front of her home crowd.  She has spent her entire high school career working towards this goal, and probably never thought she’d get it with a season and a half still to play in her career. As talented of a setter as she is, Rylee is smart enough to know that her passers, and hitters have played a huge role in getting her here.  She doesn’t have to spend too much time running around the court to try and get the offense in system.  The passes she receives from her back row are almost always on target, and make the life of a setter easy.  Rylee has built a strong bond with her hitters, she knows where to put the ball, and she has the accuracy to always place it where it needs to be.

Rylee caught up with YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her milestone moment. She also talks about her career at Southern, the people that have always been there for her, and much more. Join the party and check out the first Southern Volleyball Player Profile on YSN.

MELLOTT MAKES IT IN THE 1000 ASSIST CLUB

SALINEVILLE OH- Southern Local took to the court Monday night looking to end a 2 game skid after starting the season hot winning 4 of their first 5 contests.

The Crusaders of Steubenville Catholic Central may have caught the Indians at a bad time as Southern took it to their visitors in straight sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-13. The night also belonged to Rylee Mellott as the junior started the night just 25 assists shy of reaching the 1,000 assist milestone. Mellott would reach that milestone in the 3rd set as she would finish the night with 32 assists and now stands at 1,007 for her career. Ashley Shroades benefitted all night long from the work of Mellott as she would finish the night with 18 kills. Hannah Reynolds was a great presence at the net contributing 9 kills, and 2 blocks to go along with 6 points. Kya McCulley added 9 points and 4 digs, while Olivia Kerns talleyed 4 blocks.

Southern (6-3) has no time to rest as they welcome EOAC foe East Palestine to Salineville on Tuesday.
