SOUTHERN SENDS A CLEAR MESSAGE

SALINEVILLE OH- The top of the EOAC volleyball standings will be hotly contested throughout the 2022 season. Southern Local sent a clear message to everyone else in the league Thursday night as the Indians took out perennial contender Columbiana in straight sets 25-7, 26-24, 25-17.

The match had all the makings of a contest that would be like a prized title bout between two fighters that would trade punches all night. The Indians would land the first big blow and never let up. Trailing 4-3 in the 1st set Southern Libero Kya McCulley would reel off 13 straight points giving the Indians a commanding 16-4 lead on their way to a first set 25-7 victory.

The second set proved to be much more competitive as the Clippers were able to shake the nerves and correct many of the errors made plaguing the young squad in the 1st set.  Columbiana would lead the 2nd set much of the way and held a 24-22 lead late before a service error gave the ball back to the Indians with the chance to serve out for the win. Rylee Mellott who up until that point struggled with her service game stepped to the service line with the confidence of her coach Bob Shansky ” I told her during the prior timeout to relax, just get the ball in, and we will take care of the rest.”

That plan was executed as the Indians would reel off three straight points leading to a 26-24 2nd set win and ultimately taking the air out of the Columbiana sails on the night. The 3rd and final set saw Columbiana show that  the young squad still had fight in them. It was the presence at the net by Southern’s Olivia Kerns that would snuff out any hopes of a Columbiana comeback on the night. Kerns,10 blocks, would seemingly impact every attempt around the net by Columbiana, an effort her head coach acknowledged “This is Olivia’s first season of varsity volleyball, the way she goes out there and performs is just tremendous and her teammates truly recognize her effort.”

Southern was led by Ashley Shroades with 24 kills and Ester Forbes 13 points and 4 kills. Rylee Mellott set her teammates up all evening posting 42 assists. Columbiana was led by Cameron Perkins with 3 kills, 5 aces and 15 digs. Ava Heinrich and Ellie Jackson each posted 10 and 7 digs respectively for the Clippers.

Columbiana (3-2, 3-1) looks to get back on track Tuesday as they host Lisbon. Southern (5-1, 4-0) has another huge test in the EOAC as rival Wellsville visits Salineville on Tuesday.

EAGLES CAPTURE EMOTIONAL WIN

HANOVERTON OH- Schools districts are usually  direct reflections of the communities they encompass.  When it comes to the love and passion those communities put on display for their school, United Local may not only be one of the best in our area but one could argue the best in the state of Ohio.  Those qualities were on full display Thursday night as United harnessed all that energy and defeated Southern Local 57-32 in front of a very energized crowd.

Entering Thursday night United held a two game lead on Southern in the EOAC title race and the Eagles wasted no time proving who belonged on top.  Behind a motivated defense United bullied the Indians into multiple turnovers racing out to a 19-4 first quarter lead.  Down big to start the second quarter Southern took advantage of United foul trouble and cut the lead to 22-11.  Not to be deterred the Eagles showed their offensive capabilities and finished the quarter on a 11-2 run extending the lead to 33-13 at the half.

The talented offense of United led by Grace Knight slammed the door shut on any second half comebacks Southern may have had in mind.  Knight, just a sophomore, is becoming one of the Eagles go to players turning in a 16 point /10 rebound performance in victory.

Coach Josh Sigler has noticed the increased output “Grace Knight is slowly becoming very good all-around player.  She makes us a dangerous team moving forward.”  Knight along with  teammate Addyson Blazer combined for 17 rebounds on the night.  The offensive output of this Eagles squad doesn’t end with just one player.  Grayson Kidder came off the bench and added a 15 points of her own.

“Grayson is very much in the conversation of making us a really good team.  We have different players every night stepping up in the scoring column.  This team does not care who scores, they just want to score.”  YSN Big Dog of the Valley nominee Madison Kibler helped guide the offense to victory with 8 points, 5 steals and team high 9 assists.  Ashley Shroades turned in a solid 15 point performance in the loss for the Indians.

Following the win Coach Sigler knows he has a tough opponent next up on the schedule “We have no time to celebrate, Poland comes to town on Saturday.  They are a very good  well coached Division 2 basketball team.  We have to be on our “A” game and have to show the fight and will to compete.  We are definitely getting better and that’s what you want to see this time of year.”

Thursday night was made extra special due to the “Random act of Kindness” The Kim & Ashley Bergman Memorial Fund provided free admission to the students from both schools. Those students took full advantage and provided a great atmosphere for the game.  “ The crowd and atmosphere was unreal.  Cannot say enough about our student section, these girls absolutely love the energy they bring.  We have one heck of a community when it comes to supporting our student athletes.”

Prior to the game that support was on full display along the sidelines as the United coaching staff honored Ashley Bergman with her own spot on the bench placing the number 23 jersey over one of the chairs.  “This game was for Bergs.” The win set the stage for Saturday as United (10-3, 9-0) vs Poland  (12-1) is slated for 11am in Hanoverton.

UNITED GETS THROUGH BATTLE WITH INDIANS

SALINEVILLE OH-

The early season matchup on Monday night between United and Southern was thought to be one that could set the tone the rest of the way in the EOAC.  After it was all said and done United was able to escape with the 35-30 victory over Southern.

Behind a very emotional start the Indians were able to get out to an early 16-11 lead behind timely three point shooting and transition baskets.  The second period, plagued by multiple miscues by both teams, was one that saw both offenses struggle.  Each team traded baskets and turnovers which led Southern to take a  22-17 lead to the locker room.

The message at the half by United Coach Josh Sigler was clear ”Don’t panic, we are making a lot of self-inflicted mistakes with missed layups and foul shots.”  The coach knew the early part of the third period was going to be key “ I told them if we come out and throw the first punch and lock down our defense we would be ok.”

Taylor Cope heard that message loud and clear.  Cope took control of the game inside on her way to a 15 point / 8 rebound performance.  Cope’s basket with 4:43 to go in the third gave the Eagles their first lead of the game and never looked back.  United’s defense limited Southern to just 8 second half points and forced 25 turnovers on the night.

United Senior Colby Burton led the Eagle attack on the boards with a team high 9 rebounds.  Grace Knight contributed a solid game for the victors with 6 points / 7 rebounds / 3 steals. Ashley Shroades led Southern with 12 points / 12 rebounds in a losing effort.  Coach Sigler after the game ”We just played two undefeated league opponents on the road and did what we had to do.  We will enjoy the win, but tomorrow we have to get better and prepare for Wellsville.”

United (3-1, 2-0) looks to keep their season going in the right direction Thursday night welcoming Wellsville to Hanoverton.
