WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 13) FEATURING DALLAS MCCRACKEN

It’s finally here! A whole season worth of wrestlers fighting and grinding has led to one weekend in Columbus.  As YSN prepares for more coverage of the state tournament than ever before, we must ask what to expect on the mats? Good thing we have a couple of wrestling gurus who can answer all questions.  YSN has 44 wrestlers competing at state, and our very own Gary Althiser, and Chris Colucci are on the ball with all the info you’ll need in this state preview episode of Wrestling Wednesdays with Gary Althiser.

This episode’s special guest is one of those 44 wrestlers getting ready for the biggest stage this sport has to offer in high school.  Dallas McCracken has brought the limelight to United wrestling with consistent success.  As he hears up for his final time as a United Eagle he reflects on his career, and what got him here with the boys on Running Point.

FORTUNA’S MILESTONE PROPELS BROOKFIELD TO ADVANCE

HANOVERTON OH- In an electrifying start to their tournament journey, Brookfield surged to victory in the first round, securing a convincing 52-38 win over United. With an impressive display of skill and determination, Brookfield showcased their resilience and tenacity on the court, earning themselves another opportunity to compete.

Leading the charge for Brookfield was Matteo Fortuna, whose outstanding performance not only propelled his team to victory but also marked a significant milestone as he surpassed 1000 career points. Fortuna’s remarkable effort included a game-high 20 points, underlining his importance to the team’s success. Shaun Dungee contributed 11 points, while Judah DeJoy added 10 points, providing crucial support to fortify Brookfield’s offensive arsenal.

Despite a valiant effort from United, led by Luke Courtney with 11 points, Brookfield’s balanced attack and stout defense proved too much to overcome.

With the win, Brookfield advances to the sectional final on Friday, where they face a challenging road matchup against Mooney.

VASJ UNDOES UNITED’S SEASON

HANOVERTON OH- In a highly anticipated tournament matchup, United basketball team saw their hot start unravel as they fell to visiting VASJ with a final score of 57-43. Despite jumping out to an early lead of 15-6 after the first quarter, United struggled to maintain their momentum as VASJ mounted a comeback and ultimately secured the victory.

Leading the scoring effort for United was Addy Blazer, who contributed 14 points in a valiant effort to keep her team in the game. Grayson Kidder added 9 points, while Grace Knight and Katie Dees each chipped in 8 points to bolster United’s offensive output.

Despite their best efforts, United was unable to contain VASJ’s relentless attack, as they fell short in their quest for postseason success. With the loss, United concludes their season with a commendable record of 15-8, with plenty of highlights and memorable moments along the way.

As for VASJ, their victory propels them to the next round of the tournament, where they will travel to face South Range on Saturday.

THE NEST IS PROTECTED IN UNITED

HANOVERTON OH- In a thrilling showdown on Tuesday night, the United High School basketball team faced a formidable challenge as they hosted Crestview. With both teams vying for supremacy, the stage was set for an intense battle on the hardwood. In the end, it was United who emerged victorious, protecting their home court with a hard-fought 64-56 win over Crestview.

Leading the charge for United was Jason Pratt, whose stellar performance saw him rack up an impressive 20 points, showcasing his scoring prowess and leadership on the court. Pratt was well-supported by Beau Eichler, who contributed 15 points, and Luke Courtney, who added 14 points to bolster United’s offensive attack.

Crestview put up a valiant fight, with Justin McKee leading the scoring effort with 16 points, followed closely by Jameson English with 14 points and Jonathan Best with 13 points. Despite their best efforts, Crestview ultimately fell short against a determined United squad.

With this crucial win, United improves their record to 9-13 as they now turn their attention to tournament play. Their next challenge will be against Brookfield at home as they look to make a splash in postseason action.

Meanwhile, Crestview concludes their regular season with a record of 7-14, with their sights set on finishing strong as they host Liberty on Thursday.

POTTERS END THE REGULAR SEASON IN STYLE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In a highly anticipated matchup, East Liverpool showcased their defensive prowess as they secured a commanding 40-27 victory over United. From the opening tip-off, the Potters’ defense proved to be the difference-maker, stifling United’s offensive efforts throughout the game.

Leading the charge for East Liverpool was Kenzie Headley, who displayed her scoring prowess with an impressive 16 points. Ayla Brown contributed 9 points to bolster the offense, while Reagan Edwards, Aynsley Galeoti, and Dacianelle Andrews each added 5 points to round out a balanced scoring effort for the Potters.

Despite a valiant effort from United, led by Grace Knight with 14 points, they struggled to find openings against East Liverpool’s suffocating defense.

With this win, East Liverpool concludes their regular season with momentum, boasting a record of 13-9 as they prepare for postseason play. Their first tournament matchup is set for February 24th, as they host Philip in what promises to be an exciting contest.

Meanwhile, United, with a record of 15-7, will await their first tournament game on February 21st, hosting VASJ.

EAGLES KEEP AN EYE ON WINNING

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In an impressive display of skill and determination, United delivered a commanding performance on Thursday night, securing a decisive victory on the road against Beaver Local with a final score of 52-23.

United’s offense was firing on all cylinders, led by Grace Knight who delivered an outstanding performance with a game-high 18 points. Kate Dees added 10 points to the scoring tally, while Addy Blazer and Grayson Kidder each contributed 7 points, highlighting the team’s balanced offensive attack.

Despite a valiant effort from Beaver Local, led by Calli Sorge with 7 points and Karsyn Bowyer with 6 points, they couldn’t overcome United’s dominant performance.

With this important win, United improves their record to an impressive 15-6 as they prepare to close out their regular season with a road matchup against East Liverpool. Meanwhile, Beaver Local, with a 6-16 record, completes their regular season and now awaits their tournament matchup on February 21st at Steubenville.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN WINS BATTLE OF THE EAGLES

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a thrilling matchup between EOAC rivals, Valley Christian asserted their dominance on their home court as they welcomed United and secured a commanding 58-42 victory.

Leading the scoring charge for Valley Christian was RaShaun Bell, who delivered a standout performance with an impressive 29 points. Jaylen Robinson contributed 9 points, while Alfred Coward added 7 points to the scoreboard, highlighting the team’s balanced offensive attack.

Despite a valiant effort from United, led by Jason Pratt with 14 points and Luke Courtney with 13 points, they couldn’t overcome Valley Christian’s determined performance.

With this important win, Valley Christian improves their record to 11-7 and looks to build on their momentum as they stay at home to host Heartland Christian on Friday. On the other hand, United, with an 8-11 record, will regroup and prepare for their upcoming matchup against Lisbon at home on Friday.

The game showcased Valley Christian’s strength and resilience, setting the stage for continued success as they push forward in the season.

KNIGHT RIDES TO 1,000 POINTS

Despite a promising win earlier in the week, United couldn’t maintain their momentum as they faced Maplewood on Wednesday, falling at home with a final score of 63-43. The Eagles encountered a resilient Maplewood team that proved to be a tough opponent.

Grace Knight, however, achieved a significant milestone in the midst of the defeat, earning her 1000th career point. Knight’s accomplishment marks her as the fourth player in United’s girls program to reach this scoring milestone, a testament to her skill and dedication on the court. While the team faced challenges, Knight’s achievement stands as a bright spot in their basketball journey.

In terms of scoring for the Eagles, Addy Blazer led with 12 points, closely followed by Grace Knight with 11 points, and Grayson Kidder contributing 9 points.

With this setback, United’s record stands at 13-6. Undeterred, they are set to return to action promptly on Thursday, hosting East Palestine at home.

CLIPPERS STILL FLYING IN THE EOAC TITLE RACE

COLUMBIANA OH- In a pivotal clash within the EOAC, Columbiana maintained their pace on Tuesday night, securing a convincing 55-31 victory over United. The Clippers showcased their prowess on the court, leaving no room for doubt about their standing in the league.

Maddox Brown led the scoring charge for Columbiana with a stellar 15-point performance, supported by Seth Struharik and Alex Eusebio, who contributed 9 points each. Devin Daugherty added 7 points to the Clippers’ offensive effort, emphasizing the team’s well-rounded performance.

United, facing a determined Columbiana squad, battled through the contest with Luke Courtney leading their offensive efforts with 11 points.

With this crucial win, Columbiana (13-4) remains a force to be reckoned with in EOAC play. They are set to continue league action on Friday with a road matchup against Leetonia. On the other side, United (7-10) returns home to host East Palestine, seeking to rebound in their upcoming contest.

UNITED CREATES LOG JAM ATOP THE EOAC

COLUMBIANA OH- In a showdown that shook up the standings, United soared into Columbiana on Monday, causing a three-way tie for first place in the EOAC with a hard-fought 39-35 victory over the Clippers. The Eagles secured a crucial win, having previously beaten Columbiana earlier in the season.

Grace Knight led the charge for United with a stellar 12-point performance, closely followed by Addy Blazer, who contributed 10 points, and Sam Lippiatt with 9 points. The trio’s collective effort proved instrumental in securing the Eagles’ victory.

Columbiana fought tenaciously, with Averi Marshall leading their offensive charge with an impressive 13 points, while Ava Heinrich added 11 points. Despite their efforts, the Clippers fell short in a closely contested battle.

With this victory, United (13-6) now finds itself in the midst of a three-way tie for first place in the EOAC. The Eagles will look to build on this momentum as they return home on Wednesday to face Maplewood. On the other side, Columbiana (15-3) aims to bounce back on Thursday with a road matchup against Leetonia. As the regular season unfolds, the EOAC race has become even more intense, with each game carrying significant implications for the standings.
