URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 4) WITH DAN REARDON

* Contributed by Anthony Romo

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Every team will look good when winning, but you learn the most about what a team is truly built for when facing adversity. The Ursuline Irish could have easily waved the white flag last Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium as the Austintown Fitch lead blossomed to 42-7 after a 55-yard touchdown run with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter. But that wouldn’t be the Ursuline way. The Irish were able to spark some momentum offensively, and after 27 unanswered fourth-quarter points, Ursuline found themselves trailing 42-34, with just under one minute remaining in the game, with an onside kick pending. Unfortunately for the Irish, Fitch would recover the onside kick and their comeback hopes would fall just short, as the Falcons would take two kneel-downs and escape with the victory in a battle of two of the area’s top programs.

There was a lot to be learned though from Ursuline’s effort on Friday night, as the Irish showed just how resilient of a bunch they are, and that there is a lot to look forward to as the season progresses. Head Coach Dan Reardon sat down with YSN’s Anthony Romo and Steve Leslie to discuss last week’s crazy game, what to look forward to in this week’s matchup with the Warren G. Harding Raiders, and much more in this week Coaches Corner brought to you by the Golden Dawn.

FITCH HOLDS OFF IRISH RALLY

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- In a battle of two of the area’s premier programs, Ursuline and Austintown Fitch took center stage at Stambaugh Stadium. Ursuline came in off a thrilling 40-38 victory over Farrell (PA) last Saturday night, and Fitch came in off an impressive 48-18 victory over Glenoak.

After forcing the Irish to turn the ball over on downs on their first possession, it was all Fitch. The Falcons forced three first-half turnovers, including an 86-yard fumble recovery touchdown by DJ Williams. A rushing touchdown by Williams as well as two touchdowns from DeShawn Vaughn Jr. to Jayden Eley gave Fitch a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half was time for Ursuline to try to get the ball into the endzone after multiple possessions in the first half that were pushed into Fitch territory but came out with zero points. An 84-yard pick-six from Iowa State commit Cam Smith made it 35-0 and put the running clock into effect after Ursuline’s first drive of the third quarter. That was when Ursuline started to get the offense rolling. The Irish answered quickly with a TD pass from Jack Ericson to DC Ferrell, eliminating the running clock, and even though the Falcons would score another touchdown to put it back into effect on their next possession, Ursuline was finally finding their rhythm. The Irish went into the fourth quarter down 42-14 but would put up 27 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull off the incredible comeback. The attempt came up just short though, as Fitch would recover Ursuline onside kick attempt in the final minute to hang on for a 42-34 victory.

The rushing attacks for both teams impressed mightily tonight, as Christian Lynch had another night with more than 200 yards for Ursuline, and the duo of Jamell James and Dj Williams combined for 240 yards on the ground, each tallying a touchdown on the night.

URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 1) WITH DAN REARDON

* CONTRIBUTED BY ANTHONY ROMO

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish started the year off on a very good note in Week 1, defeating the Brookfield Warriors 52-14 in a highly anticipated matchup at Stambaugh Stadium. There were many new faces that stood out for a team that lost some of the most decorated athletes in program history after last year’s Division IV State Championship Game loss, a game in which Head Coach Dan Reardon stresses does too much overshadowing on a season in which the Irish did so much to return to the state title game for the first time since 2010.

Though Ursuline showed a lot of fans around the valley just what they could be capable of, they face a tough test in Week 2 as they will welcome Parma Padua Franciscan to Youngstown on Friday night. Coach Reardon discussed some of the threats that Padua brings to the field, as well as some of the things that the Irish will have to improve on heading into Friday night’s showdown.

All that and so much more in this week’s episode of Ursuline Irish football coach’s corner with head coach, Dan Reardon!
