RAIDERS FIGHT OFF IRISH ON THE ROAD

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Izzy Lamparty has a huge day as the South Range girls’ basketball team got a 50-39 win over Ursuline.

The Raiders jumped ahead early with their strongest offensive quarter of the day scoring 17 in the first frame and leading 17-8 after one. After the first, the Irish kept the game within striking distance. They outscored the Raiders 15-11 in the second quarter and trailed at half 28-23. The Raiders did just enough to keep a decent lead throughout the third quarter. They led 37-31 after three. The Irish had a very strong fourth quarter racking up 16 points and keeping things interesting. But the Raiders made enough plays to keep the Irish away and win 50-39.

Izzy Lamparty was key to the Raiders strong start. She finished with 26 points, 19 of those coming in the first half. Lexi Giles was also in double figures with 10.

Anisah Moorman led the Irish with 14 points.

South Range returns home on Monday as they host Struthers.

IRISH WIN A DEFENSIVE BATTLE OVER JFK

WARREN, OH- On Thursday night, a defensive battle was won by Ursuline against Kennedy with a final score of 59-50. This game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, December 10th but was canceled due to a power outage in half of Warren.

While the Eagles were without one of their starters Hayden Wait, Kennedy and Ursuline had many lead changes at the beginning of the first quarter with Kennedy being the first ones to score by a free throw from Tyrel James. Saba Svani pulled an incredible block on a layup by Daysean Harris, which was recovered by Cam Hollobaugh from Kennedy and fed down the field for a routine layup. At the end of the first quarter, Ursuline was up 20-12, and they seemed to stay on top throughout the entirety of the game.

In the second quarter, much stayed the same. Ursuline kept the great spacing between them and the Eagles. Kennedy tried to power through the Ursuline defense but just could not get a good flow going. The Eagles suffered an 11 point deficit in the middle of the second period but did their best to cut it down to 5. Kennedy tried to mount a comeback but ended the half down 25-32.

After the half, Kennedy was looking to get some consistent shooting going through the next half of this game. They cut the deficit down to 3 points at one time, but every time the Eagles seemed to get a rhythm going, Ursuline would storm back up and proceed to score 5 points easily. Ursuline ended up being very consistent with three-point shooting just as they were in the first half, and Kennedy cleaned up their game much more in this second half.

By the end of the fourth quarter, Ursuline kept grinding away at consistent scoring and did not let the Eagles catch up. Ursuline then ran away with the game 59-50. Leading the Fighting Irish in scoring was Daysean Harris with 15 points in the game making 2 out of 3 free throws, and Vince Armini with 7 out of 10 made. On the other side of the ball, the senior from the country of Georgia, Saba Svani, led the Eagles with 12 points and 6 out of 9 free throws made.

The Eagles will go back to action Friday, December 13 against Cleveland Central Catholic.

MOONEY WINS INSTANT CLASSIC AGAINST RIVAL URSULINE

You can find dozens of metaphors and definitions for makes a great rivalry. In the end, these games just mean more. And when it means more, the best often comes out of the coaches, and especially the players.

Mooney and Ursuline have decades of tradition between them, hard fought victories and intense competition. Those things, along with the toughness only a rivalry like this one can bring, were on full display tonight as the Lady Cardinals played host to the Fighting Irish.

The action started fast, with both teams exchanging 3 pointers to start. But the trademark for Mooney has always been their defense, and it quickly locked in on the Irish and held them to just 10 points in the first quarter. The Cardinals led by 5. However, the second quarter was not nearly as lopsided. In the quarter, Mooney scored 8 to Ursuline’s 7, led mostly by junior Katie Hough. Hough flirted with a double double for most of the game, and was exceptional from the free throw line, 7 of 9. Drama hit at the very end of the quarter however, as Gia Diorio for Mooney and Paris Gilmore for Ursuline both left the court with injuries. The two had been matched up on one another for the majority of the night.

Both Paris and Gia sat for most of the third quarter, but two more players would need medical attention. Alaina Scavina dealt with a lower leg injury, as did Rachel Fabry for the Irish. Ursuline, down two starters, would go on a run to cut the deficit to 3, but Maria Fire, a freshman thrust into action, played a huge role in Mooney retaking and maintaining a 5 point lead into the fourth. Fire had 6 points off the bench and 2 huge blocks.

Paris and Gia returned to the court, in what might be the most perfect and moving image to symbolize the Holy War rivalry. Paris, visibly limping and in pain, being guarded by Diorio, who had a severely taped left wrist which she couldn’t even dribble with, was truly a sight to behold. Scavina and Fabry also returned, making it four girls total fighting through the pain. That’s just how much it means.

The game, however, was simply taken over by Katie Hough. Her prolific free throw shooting and phenomenal defense were just too much for the Irish. Hough would finish with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Not to be outdone, senior Catie Perry had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals, her hustle and on ball defense coming up huge down the stretch. But the same could be said for every girl who stepped foot on the court this game. The Irish and Cardinals laid it all on the court in the name of this rivalry. And despite the fact one team had to lose, everyone knows when it comes to Mooney and Ursuline, it’s never truly over.

This chapter of the Holy War goes too Mooney, a final score of 43-31.

URSULINE FALLS SHORT TO OPEN SEASON

DOYLESTOWN, OH- The Ursuline Lady Irish opened up their season on the road at the Chippewa Classic where they were able to put up points, but it just wasn’t enough to take down the host team as Chippewa prevailed 53-44.

For the Lady Irish, Anisah Moorman led the way with 13 points and 6 assists.  Cara McNally dialed up a 3-ball on her way to 8 points, and Paris Gilmore had 10.  Rachel Fabry and Alayna Smith added a pair of assists apiece as well.

Ursuline(0-1) will host Columbiana this week on Thursday, the game will be streamed on YSN.

HOLY TOLEDO! BARBATO PICKS ROCKETS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- One of The Valley’s most highly sought after softball recruits of 2021 has come off the board.  This week, Ursuline’s Maris Barbato chose The University of Toledo to continue her student-athletic career.

Barbato already owns multiple records only 2 years into her tenure as a part of the Lady Irish Softball Team.  Barbato batted .525 as the leadoff hitter, and has the ability to play anywhere on the diamond.

“I’m very excited, very thankful to go to Toledo…my coaches are amazing!  Coach Szolek, Coach Kernan, and my dad coached me too,” says Barbato.  “I love all my teammates, they make me enjoy the sport.”

During travel ball, Barbato plays for The USSSA Pride Scarlet with several standout softball players.

“I loved his coaching style, I love the coaching staff there…it was like a family atmosphere.”

Barbato still has two seasons with Mike Kernan and the Ursuline Irish, and you can watch their games right here on YSN.

URSULINE FALLS IN BATTLE OF THE IRISH

AKRON, OH- The Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish football team traveled down I-76 to Akron, to face their longtime rival, the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish. Ursuline entered this game at 2-7, with their second win coming one week ago at Stambaugh Stadium against their arch-nemesis, the Youngstown Cardinal Mooney Cardinals.

Unfortunately for Ursuline, they were unable to carry the momentum into week 10, as SVSM would dominate from the get-go. SVSM protected home turf and grabbed a 27-7 victory over Ursuline. In this contest, SVSM running back, George Linberger, would eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark on the season, while quarterback Luke Lindsey would continue to pad his passing record.

Ursuline’s lone touchdown came late in the 4th quarter when QB Brady Shannon found wide receiver Dean Boyd in the end zone for a high point grab.

Ursuline ends their season at 2-8. The victories came against the Youngstown Chaney Cowboys in a 27-26 thriller at home, while the second win came against Mooney in a 20-13 showstopper. Ursuline’s defeats came to the Cleveland Benedictine Bengals (52-26), Austintown Fitch Falcons (27-7), Mentor Lake Catholic Cougars (36-0), Youngstown East Golden Bears (28-27 2OT), Columbus Bishop Watterson Eagles (35-34), Boardman Spartans (34-19), and now SVSM.

Head coach Dan Reardon, in his year of return to the school he built a dynasty, will lose only six seniors. 2020 will see Ursuline return multiple talents, with the hopes of grabbing a winning record for the first time since 2015.
