BEAVERS, TIGERS KEEP EYES ON THE PRIZE

WHEELING, WV- All wrestling eyes in the lower Ohio Valley are on Wheeling, West Virginia as one of the largest wrestling tournaments in the country is taking place.

The annual OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships is taking place and a usual suspect has multiple wrestlers advancing.  The Beaver Local Beavers and the Wellsville Tigers two of the area’s storied wrestling programs descended on West Banco Arena looking to continue their success on the local wrestling scene.

After the dust settled on the opening rounds the Beavers find themselves in first place in the Class 4A team standings at 114 points.  Wellsvile currently sits in seventh in the Class 1A/2A standings.  Beaver Local has four wrestlers and Wellsville sends a pair of young men looking for championship gold today .   The Beavers’ Jaymin Salsberry (13-1) 132-pound, Mark Emmerling Jr (15-2) 152-pound,  and Dorian Jackson (9-4) 145-pound, all three in great position on Saturday to claim titles for the Red and White.  Logan Ours (19-1) 160-pound looks to continue his dominance this season.  Ours has pinned all three of his opponents in less than 2 minutes total time during the tournament.  The Wyoming wrestling recruit is looking to become a three time OVAC champion.  Wellsville’s Mason Simms 106-pound and Tyler Stanley (11-4) 285-pound are looking to get the Tigers to the top of the podium today.

Championship action begins today with the Semifinal round beginning at 11am followed by the Finals slated for 4pm at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.

ALL-AMERICAN BUCKEYE LOOKS TO TEACH NEW GENERATION

COLUMBUS, OH- The jump from one level of competition to the next is often one of the biggest challenges one can make.  To spring from one side of the state border to another and become one of the most recognized in your sport?

That’s a whole different level.

Ohio State Wrestler, Luke Pletcher made his name in Latrobe, PA where he was a three-time Pennsylvania state champion and four-time finalist.  Pletcher also won the PIAA state title as a freshman at 106 lbs. and then knocked off the defending champion in the 2014 state finals at 120 lbs.  When he made the jump to the NCAA, he was able to earn an impressive resume in Scarlet and Gray as well:

• All-American (2018, 2019)
• Big Ten Champion (2020)
• Big Ten Finalist (2018, 2019, 2020)
• Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Champion (2017, 2020)
• NCAA qualifier (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020)
• TheOpenMat.com Freshman All-American team (2017)
• NWCA Scholar All-American (2018, 2019)
• Academic All-Big Ten (2018, 2019)
• OSU Scholar-Athlete (2017, 2018, 2019)

WELLSVILLE WRESTLING ROUNDUP

WELLSVILLE, OH- It’s not something we talk about much, quite frankly, because we don’t know enough about the sport to be experts in it- and announce to educate across our network.  However, we have friends, and our friends know just about everything.

A big-time contributor to YSN, and Head Wrestling Coach in Wellsville- Gary Althiser sits down with DJ to talk about the area’s best, as well as what the walk has been like in Wellsville over the last 4 years on the mat.

THAT’S A FACT, JACK!

At first look at Girard Senior Jack DelGarbino, you can’t help but be caught up with the quiet confidence that he exudes.  DelGarbino instills a blue-collar work ethic that comes from great conversations with those that have come before him, including his father, JT.

As many have-Jack learned the majority of his lessons through the experience, whether it win, lose, or draw.  A multi-sport athlete, DelGarbino is a leader on the football field, and a state and national champion on the wrestling mat.

YSN’s Britt Taylor caught up with Princeton’s newest recruit, and talks over his plans for the future in this week’s Girard Player Profile: THAT’S A FACT, JACK!
