WORLD SERIES AWAITS FOR AUSTINTOWN

GREENVILLE NC- It’s been a long road for Austintown 12u softball. What started as a district tournament in Boardman has now ended with a final stop in Greenville North Carolina.  Their run to the Little League World Series has seen over 20hours of travel when you add up all the places the team has gone. From Boardman, to Ironton, to Whitestown, and now to Greenville it’s truly been a journey.

After dropping the first game of the tournament in regionals Austintown worked their way all the way back to the title game.  They had to win a total of 6 games to win a regional, compared to their championship opponent Iowa who had only played 3 games going in to the game. That experience playing in do or due circumstances paid dividends for Austintown as they never flinched in the title game victory. Austintown won the game against Iowa 4-0.  The win secured their spot as the Central Region representatives in the Little League World Series.

Making the World Series comes with plenty of perks outside of just the honor of playing against the world’s best.  The team was greater to North Carolina with New Jerseys, new gear, and new swag that they’ll be able to treasure forever.  They also will get the opportunity to interact and watch some of the best softball players in the world as the professional softball league Athletes Unlimited sends their entire roster down to Greenville to play a double header on August 9th.

We had the chance to catch up with members of the Austintown 12u team as they prepare for the start of the World Series. Head coach Matt Hamley, Seneca Coates, Kate Averell, ZaraBurt, and Annabel Mikesell all joined the conversation to talk about the whirlwind week they’ve had.

Austintown starts their run in the World Series on Sunday at 10:00am against North Carolina.  That game can be seen on ESPN+.
