AUER BECOMES PROGRAM KILL LEADER IN ANOTHER CRESTVIEW SWEEP

Crestview continued to assert their dominance in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) with another commanding sweep, this time on the road against Campbell. The final scores of 25-6, 25-11, and 25-8 showcased Crestview’s ability to control the match and secure a decisive victory.

Crestview’s players delivered standout performances, contributing to the team’s impressive win. Abbey Emch displayed her scoring prowess with an exceptional 14 kills, further solidifying her reputation as a reliable source of points for her team. Emch’s versatility was evident as she also contributed 13 digs, achieving a double-double for the match.

Grace Auer was a force to be reckoned with, tallying 12 kills and 17 assists, showcasing her ability to both score and set up her teammates effectively. Her all-around performance included 2 blocks and 2 aces, emphasizing her versatility and impact on the game. Auer broke the program record for kills in a career. It was previously held by MacKenzie Daub who graduated in 2018.  The record was 1042. Auer is currently at 1,048.  Julia Blasko added 10 kills and 9 digs, further bolstering Crestview’s offensive efforts.

Lainy Auer orchestrated the team’s offense with precision, tallying an impressive 23 assists, while also contributing 7 kills and 8 digs. Her ability to set up her teammates and contribute defensively was instrumental in Crestview’s success. She also added 2 aces to her performance.

Crestview’s ability to dominate all facets of the game was evident in this sweep. Their consistency, teamwork, and execution allowed them to secure a convincing win on the road.

With this victory, Crestview looks ahead to their next challenge as they return home to host McDonald on Monday. Their impressive performance in this match will undoubtedly serve as a source of confidence and motivation as they continue their successful journey in the world of high school volleyball and the MVAC.

WESTERN RESERVE CAGES THE WILDCATS

BERLIN CENTER OH- Monday night on Your Sports Network was a night that showcased the volleyball and soccer talent from around the area. With four matchups occurring in both sports, including the volleyball match out in Berlin Center between, the home team, The Western-Reserve Blue Devils and The Struthers Wildcats. Coming from different conferences, The Blue Devils out of The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) and The Wildcats out of The Northeast 8 (NE8), the matchup served as a non-conference test before both teams resumed conference action on Tuesday.

Both teams were hungry for an opening set victory and showed it with their play to start! As the exchanging of points happened at a rapid rate and in a blink of an eye it was tied up 11-11 between the two teams in set one. However, The Blue Devils focused up and got efficient with their swings. Managing a 14-1 run to end the set, Western-Reserve would capture the opening set win 25-12. Taking the momentum that ended the set previous and carrying it into the next one, The Blue Devils were not messing around. Coming out with a fury and capitalizing on Struthers mistakes while doing work behind the service line saw Reserve capture a convincing 25-9 set two win and take a commanding 2-0 set lead.

The third set was the most competitive, with The Wildcats at one point grabbing a 12-7 lead with Mickey Taaffe leading the way behind the service line for Struthers. But once again, despite the battle of The Wildcats, The Blue Devils just had a little more in the tank. Managing the deficit and working themselves back in front as the third set came down to the wire. It would be Western-Reserve that would get the better of Struthers 25-21 in and fun and competitive concluding set three.

Angelina Cappabianca had an impressive statline for The Blue Devils, recording 10 kills, 7 blocks and an ace on the evening. Lisa Eichert led the way in kills (15) while also getting the double-double with digs (11), Eichert also pitched in elsewhere with 2 aces and a block. The two setters were equally as good on Monday as Haylee Fellows and Quincy Miller each had 14 assists to lead the team. While Ally Jones was the defensive anchor once again with her team-leading 18 digs on the night.

The straight-set sweep for Western Reserve (10-1) puts them back into conference action as they hit the road Tuesday, September 19th to do battle with The Waterloo Vikings (5-5). Struthers (5-8) will also be in conference action, as they look to bounce back against a very tough Girard (9-2) also on Tuesday.

BLUE DEVILS STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE

MCDONALD OH- In a non-conference showdown, the McDonald volleyball team showcased their dominance as they swept Brookfield in an impressive fashion to kick off the week. The scores spoke volumes about McDonald’s prowess on the court, as they secured the victory with scores of 25-10, 25-15, and 25-14.

Leading the charge for McDonald were several standout players who made significant contributions to the team’s success. Megan Klockner displayed her skill as a playmaker with 20 assists, ensuring smooth and efficient offensive execution. In addition to her playmaking, Klockner showcased her defensive abilities with 8 digs, highlighting her all-around contribution to the team.

Gianna Constantino’s impact on the match was undeniable, as she tallied an impressive 10 kills, underlining her proficiency at the net. Her 9 digs also demonstrated her commitment to the defensive aspect of the game. Lauren Sierra and Miley Titus also played crucial roles in McDonald’s defensive efforts, contributing 9 and 8 digs, respectively.

Brookfield, while facing a tough opponent, showcased their own talents on the court. Ariana Jones and Leah Wlodarski led the defensive efforts with 5 and 6 digs, respectively. Rylie Burdge orchestrated the team’s offense with 6 assists, while Cailey Wellman and Alyson Ruschak demonstrated their blocking prowess with 4 and 3 blocks, respectively. Wellman also made her presence felt on the offensive end with 7 kills, joined by Leah Wlodarski and Sarah Lindholm with 2 kills each. The team’s serving game was bolstered by Alexia Baker, Sarah Lindholm, and Cailey Wellman, who collectively contributed 4 aces.

This non-conference victory for McDonald sets a positive tone for the week, and it underscores their capabilities on both ends of the court. Brookfield, despite the loss, exhibited resilience and showcased their own strengths in the match. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances in pursuit of their respective goals in the world of high school volleyball.

BLUE DEVILS WIN BACK TO BACK MVAC BATTLES

BERLIN CENTER OH- In an exhilarating MVAC matchup, Western Reserve secured a hard-fought 21-14 win over Lowellville.

The first quarter remained scoreless as both teams battled for control. The suspense built as the game entered the second quarter, where Western Reserve drew first blood. Quarterback Luke Henning connected with Dominic Ricciardi on a 5-yard touchdown pass, and Andriy Chuta Soy added the extra point, putting Western Reserve ahead 7-0. However, Lowellville responded swiftly, with Tino Rivera-Ocasio charging into the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown run, and Matthew Lucido’s successful PAT leveled the score at 7-7.

The third quarter opened with Lowellville making a strong statement. Quarterback Michael Ballone orchestrated an 18-yard touchdown run, and with Lucido’s PAT, they claimed a 14-7 lead. Western Reserve, determined to turn the tide, answered back. Henning showcased his passing prowess once more, delivering a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Cannon. With Chuta Soy’s PAT, the game was tied at 14-14.

As the final quarter unfolded, the stakes were higher than ever. Western Reserve seized the moment, with running back Jack Darney bulldozing his way into the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown run. Chuta Soy’s successful PAT gave Western Reserve a critical 21-14 advantage. In a thrilling finale, Western Reserve’s defense held strong, ensuring that Lowellville couldn’t mount a comeback.

This intense matchup highlighted the resilience and determination of both teams. Western Reserve showcased its offensive versatility, with Henning orchestrating crucial touchdown passes. Lowellville fought fiercely but fell just short of securing the victory. In the end, Western Reserve emerged triumphant, securing a significant MVAC win and thrilling its fans.

BLUE JAYS PULL OUT A THRILLER

MCDONALD OH- In a high-stakes showdown, Jackson Milton showcased their late-game heroics to secure a thrilling 28-21 victory over McDonald.

The first quarter saw McDonald’s Drew Zajack connect with Jordan Perry for a touchdown pass, giving them an early 7-0 lead. A pivotal moment came when McDonald recovered an onside kick on the 25-yard line, but they couldn’t capitalize, leaving the score unchanged.

Jackson Milton came roaring back in the second quarter with Cayden Mitchell’s 9-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 7-7. However, Drew Zajack answered with a 3-yard touchdown run for McDonald, regaining their lead at 14-7. Mitchell responded with a 30-yard pass to Aiden Stanke, setting up a 5-yard touchdown run by Stanke, tying the score again at 14-14.

In the third quarter, Mitchell unleashed a 50-yard pass to Keegan White, positioning Jackson Milton at the McDonald 32-yard line. Mitchell capitalized on this with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jonah French, pushing Jackson Milton ahead at 21-14.

As the fourth quarter heated up, Zajack delivered under pressure, scoring a 3-yard touchdown run, tying the game once more at 21-21. However, the defining moment came when Cayden Mitchell connected with Vincent Faye for a stunning 57-yard touchdown pass, giving Jackson Milton a 28-21 advantage.

In the closing minutes, Jackson Milton’s defense stepped up, with Keegan White sacking Drew Zajack, sealing the hard-fought victory. Mitchell’s late-game heroics, including a crucial run and the game-winning pass, proved to be the difference-maker.

MUSTANGS WIN OVERTIME THRILLER IN HOME OPENER

Orwell, OH- In a matchup that needed overtime to decide the winner, the Grand Valley Mustangs faced off against the Wickliffe Blue Devils in their home opener. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for victory.

The second quarter saw Wickliffe’s Ralph Jackson breaking through the Mustangs’ defense with a 13-yard touchdown run, putting the Blue Devils on the scoreboard with an extra point. The score stood at Grand Valley 0 – Wickliffe 7.

The Mustangs came roaring back in the third quarter, as Bobby Rogers bulldozed his way into the end zone with a 3-yard touchdown run. Sammy Goforth executed a flawless 2-point conversion run, giving Grand Valley the lead at 8 – 7.

But Wickliffe wasn’t to be outdone, with Jimmie Feaster responding with a 3-yard touchdown run of his own in the same quarter, along with a successful extra point. Wickliffe regained the lead at 14 – 8.

The seesaw battle continued, and in the third quarter, Sammy Goforth connected with Aiden Baker on a spectacular 30-yard touchdown pass for the Mustangs. However, the 2-point conversion attempt fell short, leaving the score tied at 14 – 14.

As regulation time ended, the tension in the stadium was palpable. Overtime was upon us, and it was Grand Valley’s Andrew Soltis who emerged as the hero, plunging into the end zone from 1 yard out to secure the thrilling victory for the Mustangs. The final score read Grand Valley 20 – Wickliffe 14.

This victory marked a significant moment for the Grand Valley Mustangs, improving their record to 2-3 and winning their first home game of the year. Looking ahead to week 6, the Mustangs are set to face the formidable Kirtland Hornets (4-1) in the CVC Valley division play at home. Meanwhile, the Wickliffe Blue Devils (1-4) will return home to take on the Trinity Trojans (1-4) as they kick off CVC Metro division play.

 

COLUMBIANA CLIPS LISBON

LISBON, OH – It was a chilly autumn evening in Columbiana as the Clippers prepared to face off against their arch-rivals, the Lisbon Blue Devils. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as fans from both teams gathered in the stands, ready to witness a fierce battle on the gridiron.

The Lisbon Blue Devils struck first, making their presence felt early in the game. Trevor Siefke, Lisbon’s agile running back, powered through the defense for a determined 6-yard touchdown run. Ben Weber’s extra point was good, and Lisbon took an early 7-0 lead.

But the Clippers were not about to let their rivals dictate the game. Columbiana quickly responded with a remarkable 18-yard touchdown run by Spencer Pruitt, who showcased his speed and agility as he weaved through defenders. Aidan Radcliff’s precise extra point tied the game at 7-7.

Lisbon was determined to maintain their lead, and they did so with a stunning 73-yard touchdown run by Ashton Hinchcliff. Ben Weber’s extra point was on target, putting Lisbon ahead 14-7.

Columbiana, however, continued to show their resilience. Quarterback Liam Surgenevic connected with Kian Hartley on a beautiful 36-yard touchdown pass. Aidan Radcliff’s extra point was good once again, leveling the score at 14-14.

As the game progressed, the Clippers seized control. Hayes McCoy, the Clippers’ quarterback, found Spencer Pruitt with a perfect 37-yard touchdown pass. Aidan Radcliff’s consistent kicking gave Columbiana a 21-14 lead.

The Clippers weren’t finished yet. Kian Hartley showcased his versatility with a 4-yard touchdown run, and Radcliff’s PAT extended the lead to 28-14 in favor of Columbiana.

But the Blue Devils wouldn’t back down. Trevor Siefke, determined to keep his team in the game, scored his second touchdown of the night with a gritty 3-yard run. Ben Weber’s extra point narrowed the gap to 28-21.

As the final minutes ticked away, Lisbon fought fiercely to try and tie the game, but the Columbiana Clippers’ defense held strong. The final whistle blew, and the Columbiana faithful erupted in cheers as their team emerged victorious, winning the intense showdown 28-21.

The game had been a true showcase of skill, determination, and the unyielding spirit of both teams. The rivalry between the Columbiana Clippers and the Lisbon Blue Devils had delivered another memorable chapter in their storied history, leaving fans on both sides eagerly awaiting the next thrilling encounter on the football field.

MINERAL RIDGE EVENS THE SCORE

BERLIN CENTER OH- In a highly anticipated rematch, Mineral Ridge exacted sweet revenge by defeating Western Reserve in three thrilling sets, drawing even at the top spot in the MVAC. The scores stood at 25-15, 26-24, and 25-21, showcasing Mineral Ridge’s determination and redemption on their home court.

Mineral Ridge’s Sammie Aulet played a pivotal role in orchestrating the offense, tallying an impressive 28 assists. Meanwhile, Faith Schneider was the offensive powerhouse, notching an impressive 17 kills, relentlessly attacking the opponent’s defense. Sheryaliz Bonita-Molina contributed with precise serving, earning three aces that kept the pressure on Western Reserve.

Western Reserve, known for their formidable squad, gave their all in this intense showdown. Alyvia Hughes led the charge with 13 kills, proving her prowess at the net. She also showcased her defensive skills with 13 digs and two blocks. Izzy Mauro played a crucial role with six kills and an imposing five blocks, demonstrating her dominance in the blocking department. Lisa Eichert contributed with eight kills and 10 digs, showcasing her versatility on both offense and defense.

This victory for Mineral Ridge serves as redemption for an earlier season loss to Western Reserve, and it propels them to share the top spot in the MVAC. The thrilling match demonstrated the competitive spirit and skill of both teams, and fans can anticipate more exciting clashes as the season unfolds.

RESERVE JUST KEEPS WINNING

BERLIN CENTER OH- Western Reserve showcased their dominance on the volleyball court with a convincing 3-0 victory over Sebring, with set scores of 25-17, 25-13, and an impressive 25-4 in the final set. Alyvia Hughes, the standout player of the match, achieved a remarkable milestone as she recorded her 1000th career kill during this outstanding performance.

Alyvia Hughes was a force to be reckoned with, contributing significantly to her team’s success. She achieved a double-double with an astonishing 15 kills and 10 digs, showcasing her prowess at both the net and in the back row. Her versatility and skill were undeniable, making her a vital asset to the Western Reserve team.

Assisting Hughes in her impressive performance were Haylee Fellows with 20 assists and Quincy Miller with 10 assists. Their precise sets allowed Hughes and her teammates to execute their plays effectively and score critical points throughout the match.

Defensively, Ally Jones stood out with 14 digs, ensuring that the Western Reserve team maintained control over the match. The final set’s score of 25-4 was a testament to the team’s dominance on the night.

BLUE DEVILS SWAT MALVERN

Lisbon put on a commanding performance as they swept Malvern with scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-18. The Lisbon squad showcased their depth and talent throughout the match. Eliza Baker was a standout with 17 points, 5 kills, and an impressive 12 digs, proving to be a key contributor on both offense and defense. Stefanee Stacey displayed her playmaking abilities with 8 points and 19 assists, orchestrating the team’s offensive efforts.

Izzy Lannon added to the offensive firepower with 8 kills while also contributing 7 digs on the defensive end. Kyrstin Reckner demonstrated her prowess as a defensive specialist, recording a notable 15 digs. The Lisbon team’s cohesive performance and well-rounded contributions secured their victory over Malvern. With this impressive win, Lisbon continues to make strides in the world of high school volleyball, leaving a mark with their skill and teamwork.
