CANFIELD SHOWS NO SIGNS OF BEING DOWN

STRUTHERS OH- Continuing their strong form from the previous season, where they reached the Regional Final, Canfield showcased their prowess in the first game of the year with a dominant 65-16 victory over Struthers.

IRISH COME UP CLUTCH AGAINST REIGNING CHAMPS

By Tim Corso

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Canfield came into the
2023 season as the defending Division 3 State Champions. However, we all know the saying, “To be the best, you need to beat the best”. And Ursuline did just that.

The Irish rallied to top the Cardinals 16-13 in the Regional Quarterfinal Friday night.

It was a highly anticipated rematch from last year’s Regional Semifinal, where the Cardinals topped the Irish 33-25, but it was defense that showed up in last night’s clash.

After a scoreless third quarter for both teams, Ursuline’s defense came up with a big stop when it needed it most.

Moving the ball into Irish territory, Canfield came up 4th-and-1 from the Ursuline 39-yard line. Scottie Eaton, who had been running through Ursuline’s defense all night took the ball to the outside on a run looking to move the chains.

It appeared Eaton had the first down, and then some, but was tripped up by Jy’Quise Liason at the last second. That big stop propelled Dan Reardon’s troops into great field position and a chance to mount a game-winning drive.

Irish quarterback Jack Ericson lost this game a year ago but didn’t plan on it this year. He hit Sophomore Devonte Taylor for a chunk play that brought Ursuline to the Canfield 25-yard line.

Moments later, on a 3rd-and-7 Ericson found D.C. Ferrell at the 5-yard line. The drive was then capped off by Christian Lynch, who found the endzone from two yards out for his second score of the game, and 24th of the season.

The ensuing Cardinal drive, Canfield quarterback Paul Bindas was looking to move the ball with time dwindling but threw an interception into the arms of Luke Kollar.

Mike Pavlansky’s defense was able to force Ursuline into a three-and-out and set up a play that could’ve been talked about forever.

With three seconds on the clock and the game on the line, Bindas took his time and let the ball go for the endzone.

When the final whistle blew, the pigskin was laying on the turf, ruled incomplete, and resulted in an Ursuline win.

Both teams came into the came with successful offenses. Ursuline was scoring 39.9 point per game, while Canfield was at 26.

After the Canfield lead was 13-9 at half, the defenses showed up and allowed just one combined score the rest of the way.

Christian Lynch and Scottie Eaton lived up to the hype in the battle of 1k backs, but it was Lynch, the Princeton commit, who got the last laugh.

Ursuline (12-0) moves on to face Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph (9-3) in the Regional Semifinal at a site TBD. Canfield’s season ends at 7-4.

CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 11) WITH MIKE PAVLANSKY

CANFIELD, OH- In the latest episode of YSN’s Coach’s Corner, Canfield football coach Mike Pavlansky sat down with DJ Yokley to discuss the upcoming week twelve matchup against the Ursuline Fighting Irish. The Canfield Cardinals have had an impressive season, and Coach Pavlansky expressed his excitement about playing high school football in November, which indicates a successful year.

When asked about their approach to facing Ursulin, Coach Pavlansky emphasized the importance of preparation and not putting too much pressure on themselves. He acknowledged that Ursuline is a formidable opponent, with a strong defense that has only allowed eleven points per game this season. Offensively, the Fighting Irish possess talented players who can make big plays.

Coach Pavlansky also discussed the experience of his own team, particularly the seasoned offensive and defensive lines. However, he acknowledged that Ursuline has made significant improvements since their last matchup, making it a challenging game for Canfield.

The conversation shifted to the respect Coach Pavlansky holds for Ursuline coach Dan Reardon. He praised Reardon’s ability to lead and run a successful program, emphasizing the need for Canfield to be well-prepared and focused to avoid being overwhelmed by the Fighting Irish.

As the Canfield Cardinals enter week twelve of the playoffs, Coach Pavlansky acknowledged the possibility that it could be the last game for the seniors. However, he believes that they understand the magnitude of the occasion and have learned from the senior classes before them.

Reflecting on the previous week’s game against Akron East, Coach Pavlansky mentioned the noticeable difference in atmosphere and fan support during the playoffs. He expects a similar atmosphere when Canfield takes on Ursuline, especially considering they will be playing at Standby Stadium for the first time in years.

Lastly, Coach Pavlansky expressed his gratitude for the support received from the Canfield community. He commended the community’s unwavering support for the school and its athletic programs.

In the lighthearted conclusion of the interview, Coach Pavlansky shared his Thanksgiving preferences, stating his top three draft picks on the holiday table: turkey at number one, followed by mashed potatoes, and Brussels sprouts for a splash of green on the plate.

As the Canfield Cardinals prepare for their week twelve matchup against the Ursuline Fighting Irish, the team is focused and determined to continue their successful playoff run. The community stands ready to support their team every step of the way.

THE SECOND ROUND IS IN THE CARDS

By Ty Bartell

AKRON OH- When the high school football playoffs start in the state of Ohio, oftentimes it is about the
stories of the teams who got there that bring as much intrigue as the game itself. How did these teams get here? What adversity did they face? Are they ready? Just a few questions that swirl around prior to week 11. The story of the Division 3 defending State Champions, The Canfield Cardinals has been one about getting respect back that they feel they never should have lost! After losing 20+ seniors a season ago and going 1-3 in their first four games, some thought that The Cardinals were a flash in the pan, a one year wonder. 6 straight wins later and a playoff berth as the #9 seed in Region 9. Meaning Canfield Would be on the road against #8  seeded Akron East Dragons who sported a great 8-2 record on the year!

With the stage set for a great 8 vs. 9 matchup, both teams would similarly play on the backs of their potent defenses like they have all season. Defense would get on the board first with Canfield’s Anthony Mazzella grabbing a 6-yard scoop and score fumble recovery. A blocked PAT by Akron East would keep the extra point off the board, giving Canfield the 6-0 advantage with 6:20 to go in the first quarter. Offense was also in The Cards as in the final seconds of the first half Paul Bindas found Scottie Eaton for 77 yards on the touchdown with 11 seconds left in the first half! A missed PAT would take another extra point opportunity away from Canfield, with The Cardinals leading 12-0 at halftime.

The third quarter almost went scoreless, until Scottie Eaton’s number was called again, this time on the ground, as Eaton rattled off a 25-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the third quarter. A successful 2-point conversion attempt on a pass from Enzo Cocca to Angelo DeLucia extended the Canfield lead to 20-0. Desperately needing a score, The Dragons put together a quick, but effective, 3 play, 70 yard touchdown drive together to cut The Cardinals lead down to a baker’s dozen at 20-7. A Canfield fumble in their own territory looked like it was going to set Akron East up on the comeback trail; however, as they have done all season, The Cardinal defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs to ice the game 20-7!

The win for Canfield (7-3) will now set them up, in a rematch from a year ago, against the #1 seeded Ursuline Fighting Irish (11-0) on Friday, November 3rd with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Keep updated with both The Fighting Irish and The Cardinals on YSN!
