EAGLES DROP A HEART BREAKER TO MARLINGTON

ALLIANCE, Ohio

For the second time in as many nights the Hubbard Lady Eagles (7-8) lost at the hands of a walk off.

A 7th inning rally in which the Lady Eagles would score 5 runs brought the game to a tie last night against the Ursuline Irish before Ursuline’s Emily Holland sealed the fate of the Eagles with her game winning RBI double.

Hubbard made another 7th inning effort in their non-conference matchup today against the Marlington Dukes (12-1). Trailing by 2, the Lady Eagles needed just two batters to draw the game to a tie. After a leadoff single by Gillian Ryser, Sydney Bowser would blast one over the left field wall to knot things up.

Tied but now with two away the Lady Eagles fired the bats up one last time for the ball game. With back-to-back singles off the bats of Haley Croyleand Riley Kachaylo, Jordyn Julierat stepped up to the plate with a chance to take the lead.

The junior outfielder answered the call with a 2-1 count, dropping a single in front of the right fielder and allowing Croyle to score from second, giving the Lady Eagles a 9-8 lead.

Unfortunately for Hubbard, their one run lead wouldn’t be enough. A leadoff single and an eventual walk had the Dukes within striking range with just one away. Chyanne Knapp would then double to left field, allowing the tying run to come across.

Trying to keep the game at a tie, Hubbard would intentionally walk one to load the bases. With still just one away, Morgan Davis did exactly what was needed, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field bringing across the winning run and breaking the Lady Eagles hearts, 10-9.

SALEM GRABS CONTROL OF EBC

SALEM OH-

Salem entered Thursday nights game with Marlington knowing that a second straight win against the Dukes would put them in full control of the Eastern Buckeye Conference. After Sophomore starter Gavin Wilms gave up 2 runs in the first while throwing 33 pitches, it didn’t look likely. But the Quakers jumped all over Marlington in the bottom of the 1st to score 5 runs of their own to grab a lead they would never relinquish.

Wilms settled in after giving up another run in the second to go the distance for the Quakers grabbing his second EBC victory giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits and striking out 5 Marlington batters.

The Salem offense stayed red hot as every single guy in the lineup for the Quakes got at least one hit and were led by junior Darius Beck who had 3 hits including a 3 run home run in the fifth that ended the scoring for Salem and by fellow junior Corey Riesen who had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s of his own.

Blaize Exline, Jackson Johnson, and Nick Coletta all had multiple hits for Salem as well.

The Quakers now sit 2 games ahead in the loss column for first place in the EBC halfway through the conference schedule. Salem is now 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the EBC. The Quakers are back in action Friday night at United at 5 pm.

WARRIORS CANT FINISH RALLY AGAINST MARLINGTON

BELOIT OH- West Branch found themselves down 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday against Marlington. The Warriors got a run across, and loaded the bases with 1 out. The Dukes reliever Ashlyn Maurer got out of the jam with only one run across to secure the victory 5-3.

The game started out as a pitcher’s duel with both teams struggling to get runners on. Marlington struck first when interference was called at third base while a Duke runner was trying to round the bag to head home. In the third inning however, the Warriors found a spark as Jordan Anderson  launched a home run off the score board, and Sydney Mercer hit a RBI triple to give West Branch a 2-1 lead.

Marlington bounced back in the next inning though as they scored 4 runs with 2 outs. Their big inning was capped by an Ava Collins 2 run home run.

Despite giving up the 5 runs, Anderson still gave the Dukes trouble in the circle, striking out 11.

POLAND THROWS LAST PUNCH TO WIN DISTRICT CROWN

POLAND OH- It was expected to be a thriller on Saturday between two seeded Poland and three seeded Marlington. The game lived up to the hype as it went back and forth all night. Poland was able to throw the final punch to come away with the 40-38 win.

Poland led most of a very close and competitive first half. With two tenth of a second left in the half though, Marlington hit two free throws to take a one point 24-23 lead into the locker room. The second half is when the game got very wild, as the two teams seem to trade leads through out the final two quarters. Neither team could pull away.

Min the final moments both teams had a handful of one point leads. It was Marlington that had a 38-37 lead late in the game. Poland got a huge shot to make it 39-38, but then an all important free throw to put them up 40-38. A three from the Dukes at the buzzer bounced off that back iron and that would be the final score of the game.

Poland had three players reach double figures on the day. Jackie Grisdale led the way with 14 points. Mary Brant continued her impressive first dose of tournament play scoring 11 points. Morgan Kluchar battled for 10 points.

Poland advances to the regional semifinals against Perry, who won on a buzzer beater against Salem in their district championship. That game will take place at Barberton High School on Tuesday night at 8:15.
