SALEM OVERCOMES SLOW START IN MARLINGTON

MARLINGTON OH- After a slow start by the high powered Quaker offense, they were able to find traction on the ground to the tune of 260 yards and knock of Marlington 35-17. After recent weeks where the aerial assault was in full force, it was the run game that dominated the night for the Quaker offense.

Jackson Johnson led the way with over 100 yards on the ground of his own, but was not alone, as Blaize Exline and Jason Austin carried the load for 80 and 89 yards respectively.

Salem was also aided by their defense, who surrendered only 3 points through the first 3 quarters, before Marlington was able to put two late touchdowns on the board. The Quakers also forced three turnovers on the evening, all interceptions, by Cam Jaquette, Donnie Oesch, and Damon Wolfe.

Wolfe’s interception couldn’t have come at a better time for the Quakers, who saw the Dukes driving and looking to cut into the Quaker lead. Deep in Quaker territory, Marlington tried to run a pitch to the left, which ended up in the hands of Wolfe, who would rumble 93 yards for the score, and put the game on ice.

Salem (6-1) now heads into the meat of the schedule with games next week at Carrollton, Canton South, before finishing off the regular season at home against West Branch. Combined, those teams are 17-4.

HUBBARD’S CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT; AMAZING RUN ENDS

HUBBARD, Ohio

With the district title on the line, the Hubbard Lady Eagles were the away team on their own field as they took on the top seeded Marlington Dukes. The two teams faced off earlier in the season back on April the 23rd in a game that ended in favor of the Dukes, 10-9.

The Lady Eagles would jump all over the Dukes in the first two innings, plating 1 in the 1st followed by 4 in the 2nd to go out in front 5-0. Hubbard’s quick start was in large part of junior Haley Croyle. Her RBI single in the first followed by a bases clearing 3 run triple in the second accounted for 4 of the Eagles first 5 runs.

Dormant through the first 2 innings, the Marlington bats awoke with a vengeance in the bottom half of the 3rd. Audrey Miller’s 2 out RBI double plated the first run of the game for the Dukes before Emma Jackson would take one deep over the left field wall on the 8th pitch of the at bat to bring them within 2.

Striking back in the 4th, Sydney Bowser would smoke a single through the 6-5 hole, bringing across Gillian Ryser and Haley Croyle, both who reached via the hit by pitch. A messy bottom half of the inning would give two runs back to the Dukes. After a double and a single to start theDukes trip to the plate, a dropped third strike would allow the first runner to come across, while a wild pitch would plate the second Marlingtonrunner of the inning.

A scoreless 5th would set the stage for a back-and-forth ending to the Division 2 Hubbard district final. Starting off the 6th with a Grace Narkumdouble followed by a Gillan Ryser single, Croylestepped up to the dish with another RBI opportunity.

Croyle would promptly deliver with 2 strikes on her by crushing a no doubter over the scoreboard in left center field, extending the Lady Eagles lead to 10-5.

Needing to at least chip away at the Hubbard lead a little in the bottom half of the inning, the Dukes chose not for just a slice of the Eagle lead, but the whole thing. Marlington’s big inning would involve 2 errors as well as a hit by pitch to bring across their first run and move the Dukes to within 4.

After another hit by pitch would load the bases, freshman Audrey Miller lined a ball over the center field wall for a grand slam and tying the game at 10. The Dukes would later plate another run to take their first lead of the game thanks to aRBI double by Ava Collins.

Trailing for the first time of the day, Hubbard needed at least one to extend the game. A leadoff single by Bell O’Brien would start the Eagles on the right foot.

Kailah Gregory would then sacrifice herself to move pinch runer, Sydney Mansour, into scoring position. Lexi Nadjusak would then single up the middle to put runners on the corners and one away. Just a deep fly away from knotting things up, Grace Narkum would hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the 7th for the Dukes left Hubbard with a good chance to move into extras for the second game in a row. However, the top of Marlington’s lineup had a different plan in mind. Angela Cirone would single to left from the leadoff spot in the lineup before Maria Davis would hit a double over the left fielders head on the 9th pitch of the at bat to bring around the speedy Cirone and walk things off from the Dukes, picking up the District title 12-11.

MARLINGTON:

Audrey Miller – 2-for-4, 1 grand slam, 1 double, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored

Angela Cirone – 3-for-4, 1 double, 3 runs scored, 1 stolen base

Emma Jackson – 3-for-4, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored

HUBBARD:

Haley Croyle 3-for-4, 1 home run, 1 triple, 7 RBIs, 2 runs scored

Grace Narkum 1-for-1, 1 double, 2 walks, 1 sac fly, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI

Sydney Bowser 1-for-3, 2 RBIs

DUKES TOO MUCH FOR GIRARD TO HANDLE

HUBBARD, Ohio

Through the first three innings of play the Girard Indians (16-10) held a firm lead over the #1 seeded Marlinton Dukes (21-6) in their district semi-final matchup, 4-0. Unfortunately for the Indians, the Dukes would strike big in the bottom half of the fourth.

Starting with their three hitting shortstop, Audrey Miller, the Dukes would hit 4 singles and reach once on an error to score 3 runs before even recording an out.

Still trailing by 1, the Dukes then loaded the bases after their 9 hitter would reach on a dropped third strike. After Angela Cirone was hit by the first pitch she saw to bring across a run, the Dukes would hit back-to-back singles to go out in front 7-4.

Tragedy would then strike for the Indians as they would make 3 errors to allow Marlington to jump out in front 12-4. The top seeded Dukes would plate an additional run later in the 5th thanks to a leadoff triple from Angela Cirone, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Morgan Davis.

Although the game was now out of the reach the Girard Indians continued to fight. A double and a pair of walks would load the bases for the Indians in the top of the 6th. A lineout and a popout from the 1-2 hitters of the Indians left Girard in danger of leaving the bases jammed and ending the game early.

Kaitlyn Culver would step to the dish and deliver aRBI single to left field. Trailing by 8, Emily Rosace would then reach first on an error by the third baseman and bring across the Indians second run of the inning. Scoring would end there for both teams, giving the Marlington Dukes the victory, 13-6.

TOP PERFORMERS:

GIRARD

Kaitlyn Culver – 3-for-3, 1 stolen base, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI

Sophie Griffith – 1-for-4, 1 double, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI

MARLINGTON

Morgan Davis 2-for-4, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs

Audrey Miller – 2-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI

Angela Cirone – 1-for-3, 1 triple, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI

WHAT’S NEXT:

Marlington– The Dukes will advance to faceoff with another member of the NE8 conference, the Hubbard Lady Eagles (16-9). The two teams faced off a little under a month ago in a game that would result in 10-9 victory at the Dukes place. Marlington has wavered since their victory over the Eagles, going 9-5 since with losses to top talent in and around the Valley.
