UNITED STANDS TALL OVER BROOKFIELD

HANOVERTON OH- The first week of the high school football playoffs in the state of Ohio is officially in the books and there were countless area matchups that provided plenty of entertainment in the first round. One of those matchups occurred between a pair of YSN schools in Division 6, Region 21 with the #4 seeded United Golden Eagles (9-1) hosting the #13 seeded Brookfield Warriors (5-5).

Brookfield started with possession early, but a fumble that was recovered by United with 9:30 left in the first quarter set up a 45-yard pass from Luke Courtney to Parker Newburn, flipping field position. Getting on the right side of the 50 yard line, translated into a 6-yard touchdown QB draw from Courtney to give Untied the 7-0 lead with 6:51 in the first quarter. The remainder of the opening quarter would be scoreless, until, with 11 minutes left in the second, The Warriors’ Kaiden Kirila blocked a punt that enabled a 39-yard touchdown return from Rico Smith to tie the game up 7-7! United would get the last laugh in the first half, getting into the red zone and scoring with, yet another, QB draw from Luke COurtney to put The Golden Eagles up 14-7 at halftime!

United would open up the scoring in the second half as well, with 5:35 in the third quarter, Luke Courtney nailed a 30-yard field goal to put The Eagles up by double digits at 17-7. The Warriors would not go away as the very next kickoff saw Rico Smith return it 55 yards to the house to cut into the deficit, trimming the United lead to 17-14. The final score came from The Eagles Luke Courtney on a 47-yard QB draw for a touchdown to retake the double digit lead at 24-14. A pair of United interceptions from Parker Newburn, his second of the day, and Logan Castro, iced the game for The Golden Eagles at 24-14!

Luke Courtney was Mr. Do-All as he was responsible for all the points in the United win with a passing touchdown, 2 rushing touchdowns and a field goal. United (10-1) will now play the #5 seeded Cuyahoga Heights Red Wolves (9-1) on Friday, November 3rd with a 7 p.m. kickoff! EAGLES RUSHING ATTACK TOO MUCH FOR FALCONS

Geneva, OH- In a difficult matchup for the Falcons, the Jefferson Falcons faced off against the Geneva Eagles, resulting in a resounding victory for the Eagles with a final score of 57-13.

The first quarter saw Geneva’s Luke Smith making his mark with a 10-yard touchdown run, followed by an extra point by Owen Pfiefer. This was just the beginning as Smith later added another 8-yard touchdown run, contributing to a 14-0 lead for Geneva. Bryce Peet joined the scoring frenzy with a 13-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 21-0.

The second quarter was no different, with Bryce Peet extending his influence with a 15-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful 2-point conversion. Jason Thrower added to the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Hayden Diemer continued the assault with a 3-yard touchdown run, bringing the lead to an impressive 43-0.

Jefferson finally found their footing in the third quarter when Jonathan Bissell broke through with a stunning 64-yard touchdown run, followed by an extra point from Jensen Yaroush. However, Geneva’s Ricky DiPetta swiftly responded with a 2-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 50-6. Jefferson’s Kaige Boczar managed to score a 35-yard touchdown run, although the extra point was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 50-13.

The fourth quarter saw Ricky DiPetta with another touchdown, this time from 1 yard out, securing the win for Geneva with a final score of 57-13.

With this victory, the Geneva Eagles improved to an impressive 9-1 record, 5-0 in the CVC Lake Division, and are set to host the Hawken Hawks in the first round of the OHSAA Playoffs. Unfortunately, the Jefferson Falcons ended their season with a 0-10 record, 0-5 in the CVC Lake Division, after the loss to Geneva.

PIRATES STEAL ONE FROM THE EAGLES

RAVENNA, OH – In a thrilling and closely contested football game between the Southeast Pirates and the Warren JFK Eagles, the outcome was decided in the final moments of the fourth quarter, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

The match began with a spectacular pass from Warren JFK’s quarterback, Fred Bolchalk, to Ian Odille for a 22-yard touchdown. The Eagles took an early 6-0 lead just 8 minutes and 12 seconds into the first quarter.

Southeast Pirates, however, responded swiftly. Antonio Mejia, the Pirates’ running back, broke free for a 13-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 6-6 with 5 minutes and 6 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The first quarter ended with both teams tied, setting the stage for an exciting matchup.

As the second quarter unfolded, the Warren JFK Eagles retook the lead. Marcus Komora carried the ball for a remarkable 32-yard touchdown run, putting the Eagles ahead 12-6 with 6 minutes remaining.

Southeast Pirates’ Case Myers had other plans. He executed a 3-yard touchdown run, and the extra point was good, making it 12-12.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter. Warren JFK’s Trevon Hall managed a 1-yard touchdown run, giving his team an 18-12 advantage with 7 minutes and 33 seconds on the clock. But the Southeast Pirates wouldn’t back down. Case Myers orchestrated a stunning 19-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 18-18 with 5 minutes and 29 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The Southeast Pirates grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter, as Antonio Mejia powered his way to a 2-yard touchdown run. With 2 minutes and 21 seconds left, Southeast led 25-18.

However, the game wasn’t over. In a dramatic final attempt, Warren JFK’s Fred Bolchalk connected with Marcus Komora for a 10-yard touchdown pass as time expired. The Eagles had a chance to tie the game with a two-point conversion but missed it, leaving the score at 25-24 in favor of the Southeast Pirates.

It was a hard-fought victory for the Southeast Pirates, who managed to hold on to their slim lead and secure a thrilling 25-24 win over the Warren JFK Eagles in a game that will be remembered for its intense moments and last-second drama.

EAGLES SHAKE OFF THE RUST AND ADVANCE

In a thrilling Sectional Finals showdown, Kennedy’s boys’ soccer team initially took some time to find their rhythm on Thursday. However, once they settled into the game, the Eagles soared to an impressive 6-0 victory over Campbell.

The momentum started building around the 12-minute mark when Nick Ryan scored a crucial header in the goalie box, putting Kennedy on the board. Over the following 12 minutes, Kennedy continued to assert their dominance, adding three more goals to their tally. Gio Femia, Dom Ryan, and Nick Ryan all contributed to this scoring spree, granting the Eagles a comfortable lead as they headed into the halftime break.

The Eagles’ performance was a testament to their skill and teamwork, securing a well-deserved victory in the Sectional Finals. With this triumph, Kennedy now looks ahead to the district semifinals, where they will host South Range on Tuesday.

CAMPBELL IN DISTRICTS FOR THE FIRST TIME

MENTOR OH- Campbell’s volleyball team etched their name into the program’s history books with a resounding victory in the sectional finals, securing their first-ever ticket to the district tournament. They did so in style, sweeping Warren JFK with set scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 25-20.

The triumph was a collective effort, with standout performances from various players. Cyra Cross and Elysia Rudolphi showcased their serving prowess, each recording 2 aces to keep the scoreboard ticking. Kendall Brunn led the offensive charge with an impressive 12 kills, while MiLeena Williams and Cyra Cross added 8 and 4, respectively. The defensive line was held strong by Kendall Brunn and Angeliz Diaz, each contributing 2 crucial blocks. Carla Ramirez Ortiz orchestrated the team’s plays, tallying an impressive 29 assists. In the backline, Cyra Cross and Angeliz Diaz were instrumental in preserving the rallies with 7 and 6 digs, respectively.

On the opposing side, Warren JFK displayed their own strengths. Jasmine Ridley stood out with 2 aces, while Hannah Myers delivered 6 crucial kills. Danielle Wickham served as the team’s playmaker with 11 assists, and Aniyah Johnson demonstrated her blocking prowess with 4 crucial blocks. Jasmine Ridley was a standout in the digging department, registering a remarkable 17 digs.

With this victory, Campbell’s volleyball journey advances to the district semifinals, where they will face the formidable top-seeded Mentor Lake Catholic. The showdown is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:00 at Grand Valley High School.

REBELS SECURE A SPOT IN DISTRICTS

HANOVERTON OH- Crestview’s girls’ soccer team showcased their determination and skill on Wednesday in a Division III soccer sectional final, ensuring that their regular-season win over United was not just a one-time success. In a thrilling contest, Crestview’s Karagin Miller proved to be the hero with a stunning free-kick goal into the upper right corner, giving the 11th-seeded Rebels a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

The match was marked by several crucial moments, with Crestview getting on the scoreboard first. Rylee Shaffer managed to score with a well-executed header, capitalizing on a corner kick from Miller with 21:07 left in the first half. However, United quickly responded as Addy Blazer found the back of the net with an assist from Kaylynn Centofanti, tying the game at 1-1 with 9:01 remaining in the first half.

With the match hanging in the balance, Karagin Miller emerged as the hero, converting a free kick with a precision shot into the upper right corner, putting Crestview ahead 2-1 with just 15 minutes left.

Katie Dees, the Eagles’ goalkeeper, displayed her skills with eight saves, keeping United’s hopes alive throughout the match.

With this thrilling victory, Crestview advances to the district semifinal, where they will face the fifth-seeded Badger at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

RAIDERS EARN ANOTHER GAME IN THEIR SEASON

COLUMBIANA OH- In an intense sectional semifinal showdown, South Range’s volleyball team displayed their prowess on the court, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory over United. The match unfolded with set scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-12, and 25-18, marking a significant win for South Range.

The South Range squad showcased their determination and teamwork, highlighting their commitment to success. Leading the charge was Sarah Kuhns, who achieved an impressive double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs. She also contributed 3 aces, playing a pivotal role in the team’s performance.

Ella Crumbacher displayed her scoring prowess with 9 kills and added 5 assists, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the game. Anna Toy showcased her defensive abilities with 17 digs and made her presence felt offensively with 8 kills and 5 aces. Olivia Meli contributed 8 kills and 2 aces, further bolstering South Range’s offensive output.

With this notable victory, South Range advances in the tournament, they’ll match up with Mineral Ridge on Saturday at 6:00 at Columbiana High School.

RYAN RUNS INTO THE BIG STAGE

WARREN- OH, JFK has seemed to have found a diamond in the rough with freshman Andrea Ryan. Ryan in her first year has tallied an astonishing 53 goals with 3 assists! Scoring 53 goals in a season is an incredible mark, but doing it as a freshman is unheard of. Ryan has made an immediate impact as the eagles last year finished the season 4-9, in Ryan’s first season she has led her team to a league title and a first round bye in the playoffs as JFK finishes 12-3-1.

 The eagles will play their first playoff game Wednesday 10/18 against Cardinal Mooney. Ryan states “This game will be tough, a lot of girls on Mooney I’ve played with in club soccer my whole life”. It definitely will be a good matchup and one we’ll be keeping an eye on!

WARREN JFK BRINGS HOME STATE TROPHY

COLUMBUS OH – The Warren JFK boys’ golf team etched their name in the books of Ohio high school golf history as they secured the OHSAA Division III State Championship in Columbus. In a thrilling contest that went down to the wire, Warren JFK emerged victorious by the slimmest of margins, edging out Newark Catholic by a mere one stroke.

Competing over two rounds in the tournament, Warren JFK displayed both skill and unwavering determination. They achieved a combined team score of 648, a testament to their collective excellence on the greens.

Bryce Van Horn contributed a total of 171 strokes across the two rounds, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to his team’s success. Andrew LaPolla showcased an impressive performance with a combined total of 157 strokes, highlighting his skill and composure under the pressure of a state championship. Henry Phillips exhibited his consistency with a total of 166 strokes, making his mark on this remarkable victory. Andrew Fredenberg played a pivotal role, contributing 164 strokes, showcasing his exceptional abilities and competitive spirit. Julian Bolino rounded out the team’s tremendous effort, accumulating a total of 172 strokes, adding depth to Warren JFK’s triumph.

The contest was a nail-biter, with Warren JFK and Newark Catholic locked in a fierce battle. In the end, it came down to the final tally, with Warren JFK narrowly securing the championship with a single-stroke advantage over their worthy opponents. The championship was a showcase of the highest level of competitive golf, a testament to the talent and dedication of these student-athletes.

UNITED HOLDS ON TO THEIR FIRST PLACE SPOT

HANOVERTON OH- In a battle of the Eagles, it was United who rose to the occasion and secured a commanding 38-6 victory over Valley Christian. The win allows United to maintain their first-place position in the EOAC, showcasing their strength and determination on the football field.

United wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter, with Luke Courtney making a 21-yard touchdown run. The successful extra point put United ahead 7-0 with 6:12 remaining in the quarter.

Continuing their offensive dominance, United extended their lead in the second quarter. Andrew Ogilvie’s 1-yard touchdown run capped off a 65-yard drive, giving United a 14-0 lead at 9:56 in the second quarter.

United further solidified their advantage as Luke Courtney nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, bringing the score to 17-0 at halftime.

United maintained their momentum in the third quarter when Dan Milburn returned the opening kickoff an impressive 72 yards for a touchdown, further extending their lead to 24-0.

Luke Courtney’s explosive 50-yard run set up Andrew Ogilvie’s 4-yard touchdown run, pushing United to a commanding 31-0 lead.

United continued to dominate in the final quarter when they recovered a fumble at Valley Christian’s 39-yard line. In the very next play, Andrew Ogilvie sprinted 39 yards for a touchdown, further solidifying United’s lead at 38-0.

Valley Christian managed to get on the board when Ja’Sean Lindsey made a 4-yard touchdown run, making the score 38-6.

The game concluded with a resounding 38-6 victory for United, highlighting their prowess on both sides of the ball and their determination to maintain their first-place position in the EOAC.

United, now 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, is set to return home to face East Palestine in their next matchup. Meanwhile, Valley Christian, with a record of 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the league, is scheduled to take on Columbiana in their upcoming game.
