POTTERS FALL TO OAK GLEN

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- There were several left stunned in their padded blue seats on Tuesday evening.  Buckeye 8 Champion, and local powerhouse, East Liverpool gave up an 8-point lead over rival Oak Glen in the final stanza and eventually fell 65-60 on their home floor.

While Oak Glen is far from a pushover on the schedule, the Big Blue Nation has come to have some high expectations for this year’s Potter team.  East Liverpool had issues with turnovers down the stretch that gave the opportunity to Oak Glen, and those chances were cashed in for a signature win.

Timmy Neal led the Potters with 14 points, while Tresean Jackson was held below his average at 13 points.  Also filling out the scoring sheet for EL was Brennan O’Hara who finished with 10.

Oak Glen’s Zach Taylor scored a game-high 22 which consisted of 5 splashes from beyond the arc.  Gage Patterson chipped in 18 to help the Golden Bears pull the upset.

 

EL COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT

NEW MANCHESTER, WV- The East Liverpool Lady Basketball Team has begun to develop quite the taste for comeback soup as of late.  Trailing last weekend at home against East Palestine, the Lady Potters were able to battle their way back and stole the game away, and on Monday, the Blue and White nearly did it again!

Oak Glen had to hang on for dear life as East Liverpool stormed back in the fourth quarter for 27 points and lost 67-64 to the Golden Bears.

Emma Ludwig led the way for East Liverpool with 23 points, while Mikayla Reed had 14.

The Lady Potters fall to 9-6 on the year and now prepare for United on the road Thursday.

POTTERS DEFEAT BEAVERS TO TAKE SEASON SWEEP

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- The Potters defeated the Beavers 64-59 on Tuesday in a classic rivalry game. The stands were packed, with not a single seat empty, and the expectations for the game were high.

Interesting events transpired to start the contest. The Beavers students were given noisemakers that they used on Potters offensive trips. On the third trip down the floor, the referees stopped the game to have the PA announcer ask the students to stop with the noisemakers, at which point, the whole Beavers side of the stands began clapping loudly to disrupt the Potters. The Beavers took advantage, having a 19-15 lead after 1. The second quarter had less clapping, but just as much action-packed basketball, as Beaver Local had the lead 31-30 heading into the half.

The third quarter was a heavyweight bout, as the team traded blow after blow. The Potters came out of it with a 4 point lead. Tre’shawn Jackson hit a couple of uncontested 3s to start the 4th and give the Potters nearly all the momentum. They took it and ran off with the 5 point victory. The Beavers drop to 7-6, while the Potters improve to 7-2.

For East Liverpool, Tresean Jackson had 26 tallies while Brennan O’Hara spotted 20 for the Potters.

The Beavers were led by the trio of Luke Chetok with 15, Josh Hilditch with 13, and Logan Reed with 11 points.

The next broadcast on YSN Beaver Local is this Thursday night when the Lady Beavers host Indian Creek at 7:00.

O’HARA COMES UP BIG AGAINST EDISON; POTTERS ROLL

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- One of the biggest threats in the area just got a little bit stronger with the emergence of a new star.  The East Liverpool Potters have been known to have big nights on the floor from the likes of their thousand point scorer, Tresean Jackson, and fellow bucket-filler, “The Real Deal” Timmy Neal.  Now, you can add another head to that monster as senior Brennan O’Hara had his Potter Party on Friday night in a big victory over Buckeye 8 opponent, Edison, 75-47.

O’Hara went off to the tune of 19 points and 5 helpers.  This coming just a week after sitting out the Steubenville game for health reasons.  Izaiah Browning had 17 points for the Blue Machine that included 5 splashes from beyond the arc.  Tresean Jackson would lead all scorers with 21 points, and Timmy Neal would chip in a dozen for the 6-2 Potters.

For Edison, Andrew Pugh led the way with 12 points while Jayden Sanders had 11.

The Potters have a huge Buckeye 8 matchup coming up on Tuesday in hostile territory.  East Liverpool will face off against rival Beaver Local in the Beaver Den, that game will be on YSN, but tickets are still available but will be sure to be a sellout.

The Wildcats will turn their attention to Buckeye Local on Tuesday at home.

JACKSON JOINS EL ELITE; POTTERS ROLL PAST CREEK

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- There’s a quote that reads “When you know yourself, you are empowered.  When you accept yourself, you are invincible.”  On Tuesday, inside the Potter Fieldhouse, the ninth member of the 1,000 Point Club was inducted into that elite group to jog the courts of ELHS.  Tresean Jackson has not only found and accepted himself and the role on this team, but he has thrived in it.  Jackson led the Potters past rival Indian Creek with a 35 point performance on the way to an 82-39 victory.

Jackson stood at 965 coming into Tuesday night, and as he’s done all season- hit the nail on the head with a near-perfect performance to celebrate a special night in his career.  Tre drilled 5 from beyond the arc, and the rest came from dazzling moves and pull-up jumpers that sent the crowd home smiling.

Also contributing to the victory for the Blue and White were Brennan O’Hara with 4 rebounds and 9 points, Timmy Neal with 10 points and five boards, and Izaiha Browning with 9 points.

Indian Creek’s Mike Krczykowski led the way with 13 points and 4 caroms for his side.  Jacob Wright also contributed with a double-digit effort and 10 points.

East Liverpool (5-0) will now look to battle Meadowbrook this Saturday at the Buckeye 8 Challenge at Ohio University Eastern.  Tipoff is set for 4:15.

LUDWIG OWNS THE LANE AS LADY POTTERS CONTROL EDISON

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- Lady Potter Senior, Emma Ludwig is headed to Fairmont State to play volleyball next fall.  However, that hasn’t stopped her from making a splash in the early-going of her final basketball season.  Ludwig kept the impressive farewell tour going last night with her teammates in an impressive 60-35 victory over Edison.

The boards were controlled by Ludwig on her way to a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds on the night.  Ciara Peachey supplemented the scoring with 14 points of her own along with 7 rebounds.  Shayla Foster had 8 points, 2 boards, and 3 assists on the evening as well.

For Edison, Alysea Fiedorczyk had an impressive showing with 19 points, 6 caroms, and 2 helpers while Alayna Meadows had 5 points, a board, and 3 assists.

East Liverpool (4-2) will turn their attention to neighboring Toronto, as they prepare to hit the road on Wednesday.

BEAVER LOCAL COMES BACK TO BEAT RIVAL POTTERS

The Lady Beavers won a home rivalry game in their first home game of the season, defeating the Lady Potters 55-36. However, it was a tale of 2 halves.

In the first half, it was a back and forth affair. The Potters erased an early 6-0 deficit and lead 14-10 towards the end of the opening quarter.  Standout senior Jenna Riccardo, the Beavers all-time leading scorer in school history, was isolated by the Potter defense in the early going. Riccardo had a few free throws and a jump shot to her credit in the first. The teams traded blows and went on their separate runs, as the Beavers took the lead 30-24 into the locker room. After the half, the Beavers turned it on and closed it out. They had a very successful full-court press, great transition defense, and Riccardo was able to find the sweet spot in the paint finishing with 16 along with Elizabeth Kolkowski’s 13, as the Beavers closed out the victory. 

For East Liverpool, Emma Ludwig chipped in 15 to lead the way for the Lady Potters.

The Lady Beavers improve to 1-1 on the year and play this Saturday at home with an approximate start time of 3:00 on YSN Beaver Local.

POTTERS TAKE BACK TURKEY BOWL FROM TIGERS

WELLSVILLE, OH- Just two miles of Ohio St. Rt. 7 separate Wellsville and East Liverpool’s communities, and while the bus ride for tonight’s game was a short one, the time in between football games between the two schools was large. 1964 was the last time these southern Columbiana County neighbors faced off on the gridiron. That year the top-rated show on television was The Munsters, I Want to Hold Your Hand was the No. 1 song on the charts, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees for a World Series title.   

In what used to be called the Turkey Bowl – because the two teams always faced off on Thanksgiving Day – the Potters came away with a 48-15 win at Nicholson Stadium on Senior Night for the Tigers. The Potters got things started off quickly in the first quarter with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Nick Woodyard to Timmy Neal. The Tigers responded with a six-minute drive of their own that saw quarterback Troy Carter take it in from the 1-yard line to tie things up. East Liverpool would score the next three touchdowns before Jason Tice hit pay dirt from two yards out to make the score 27-15 with 49 seconds to go in the first half. On the Potter’s next drive, Draven Crow forced a fumble giving the Tigers a first and goal inside the 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t capitalize and went into the half with a 12-point deficit. 

The second half was all East Liverpool as the Potters scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to cap off scoring for the night. The Potters all-time leading rusher Derek Carter had a night to remember as he gained 319 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Woodyard had 107 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well. For the Tigers, Jason Tice had 45 yards and a touchdown out of the backfield, and Troy Carter went 14/27 with 130 yards through the air. 

Both teams finish the year at 5-5 and out of playoff contention.

EAST LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 6) WITH JOSH LUDWIG

Week nine saw Coach Josh Ludwig and the East Liverpool Potters travel into West Virginia to take on the Red Riders of Weir. Unfortunately, the Potters fell just a little short. Week ten will be the much-anticipated rivalry game, as Coach Lud and his squad will hit the road down to Wellsville to take on the Tigers.

YSN’s own Tommy Pease caught up with Coach Ludwig to discuss what he took away from last week’s hard-fought game against Weir but also what he thought about how the 2019 football season went for the Potters.
