CARDINALS SET ONE COMEBACK SETS THE STAGE FOR THEIR SWEEP

YOUNGSTOWN OH-!In a remarkable display of determination and resilience, Mooney’s volleyball team staged an incredible comeback from a seven-point deficit in set one to ultimately secure a sweeping victory over Liberty. The final scores of 26-24, 25-13, and 25-6 told the story of Mooney’s unwavering resolve and dominance on the court.

The first set set the tone for the match, as Mooney found themselves trailing 24-17. However, they mounted an astonishing comeback, refusing to concede and eventually clinching the set 26-24. This turnaround was a testament to their grit and determination.

Several key players played pivotal roles in Mooney’s impressive victory. Brinkley Bair was a force to be reckoned with, amassing 13 kills and contributing 2 blocks to the team’s efforts. Amarra Anderson added 10 kills and 4 blocks to her name, showcasing her prowess at the net. Jaida Lane demonstrated her versatility with 8 kills, 2 blocks, and an impressive 4 aces, proving her impact on both offense and defense.

Natalie Blasko orchestrated the team’s offense with precision, tallying 31 assists while also contributing 6 digs and 2 aces. Katie Frommelt held down the fort defensively with 8 digs and added 3 aces to her impressive performance.

The victory for Mooney was not only a testament to their individual talents but also their cohesion as a team. Their ability to bounce back from a significant deficit in the first set and then dominate the subsequent sets demonstrated their unity and resilience.

WESTERN RESERVE CAGES THE WILDCATS

BERLIN CENTER OH- Monday night on Your Sports Network was a night that showcased the volleyball and soccer talent from around the area. With four matchups occurring in both sports, including the volleyball match out in Berlin Center between, the home team, The Western-Reserve Blue Devils and The Struthers Wildcats. Coming from different conferences, The Blue Devils out of The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) and The Wildcats out of The Northeast 8 (NE8), the matchup served as a non-conference test before both teams resumed conference action on Tuesday.

Both teams were hungry for an opening set victory and showed it with their play to start! As the exchanging of points happened at a rapid rate and in a blink of an eye it was tied up 11-11 between the two teams in set one. However, The Blue Devils focused up and got efficient with their swings. Managing a 14-1 run to end the set, Western-Reserve would capture the opening set win 25-12. Taking the momentum that ended the set previous and carrying it into the next one, The Blue Devils were not messing around. Coming out with a fury and capitalizing on Struthers mistakes while doing work behind the service line saw Reserve capture a convincing 25-9 set two win and take a commanding 2-0 set lead.

The third set was the most competitive, with The Wildcats at one point grabbing a 12-7 lead with Mickey Taaffe leading the way behind the service line for Struthers. But once again, despite the battle of The Wildcats, The Blue Devils just had a little more in the tank. Managing the deficit and working themselves back in front as the third set came down to the wire. It would be Western-Reserve that would get the better of Struthers 25-21 in and fun and competitive concluding set three.

Angelina Cappabianca had an impressive statline for The Blue Devils, recording 10 kills, 7 blocks and an ace on the evening. Lisa Eichert led the way in kills (15) while also getting the double-double with digs (11), Eichert also pitched in elsewhere with 2 aces and a block. The two setters were equally as good on Monday as Haylee Fellows and Quincy Miller each had 14 assists to lead the team. While Ally Jones was the defensive anchor once again with her team-leading 18 digs on the night.

The straight-set sweep for Western Reserve (10-1) puts them back into conference action as they hit the road Tuesday, September 19th to do battle with The Waterloo Vikings (5-5). Struthers (5-8) will also be in conference action, as they look to bounce back against a very tough Girard (9-2) also on Tuesday.

BULLDOGS SHOW CANFIELD HOW IT’S DONE

CORTLAND OH- In a thrilling volleyball matchup, Lakeview showcased their dominance as they secured a convincing three-set victory over Canfield. With this win, Lakeview’s impressive season continued, boasting a record of 11-1, while Canfield put up a strong effort despite a 3-6 season. (25-16 26-24 25-17)

Individual performances from both teams added to the excitement of the match. Reagan Price of Lakeview was a standout with her exceptional service points, totaling an impressive 13 points. Meanwhile, Mara Schmader contributed 2 aces, showcasing her skill from the service line. Molly Stuart shone as Lakeview’s offensive powerhouse, recording a remarkable 18 kills. Mallory Mailach played a pivotal role as a playmaker with 39 assists, ensuring seamless offensive execution. On the defensive front, Reagan Price contributed 2 blocks, while Addy Allen showcased her prowess with 18 digs, anchoring Lakeview’s defense.

Canfield, though facing a formidable opponent, had their own standout performers. Lauren Miasek delivered strong serves with 2 aces, adding to the team’s effort. Ashtyn Hanousek was a force at the net, notching an impressive 13 kills. Vivian Biro orchestrated the team’s offense with 25 assists, displaying her playmaking abilities. Meredith Ross stood tall with 4 blocks, adding a defensive dimension to Canfield’s game. Alexis Lefour contributed significantly with 19 digs, reinforcing the team’s defensive efforts.

This match highlighted the competitive spirit and skill of both Lakeview and Canfield. BLUE DEVILS STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE

MCDONALD OH- In a non-conference showdown, the McDonald volleyball team showcased their dominance as they swept Brookfield in an impressive fashion to kick off the week. The scores spoke volumes about McDonald’s prowess on the court, as they secured the victory with scores of 25-10, 25-15, and 25-14.

Leading the charge for McDonald were several standout players who made significant contributions to the team’s success. Megan Klockner displayed her skill as a playmaker with 20 assists, ensuring smooth and efficient offensive execution. In addition to her playmaking, Klockner showcased her defensive abilities with 8 digs, highlighting her all-around contribution to the team.

Gianna Constantino’s impact on the match was undeniable, as she tallied an impressive 10 kills, underlining her proficiency at the net. Her 9 digs also demonstrated her commitment to the defensive aspect of the game. Lauren Sierra and Miley Titus also played crucial roles in McDonald’s defensive efforts, contributing 9 and 8 digs, respectively.

Brookfield, while facing a tough opponent, showcased their own talents on the court. Ariana Jones and Leah Wlodarski led the defensive efforts with 5 and 6 digs, respectively. Rylie Burdge orchestrated the team’s offense with 6 assists, while Cailey Wellman and Alyson Ruschak demonstrated their blocking prowess with 4 and 3 blocks, respectively. Wellman also made her presence felt on the offensive end with 7 kills, joined by Leah Wlodarski and Sarah Lindholm with 2 kills each. The team’s serving game was bolstered by Alexia Baker, Sarah Lindholm, and Cailey Wellman, who collectively contributed 4 aces.

This non-conference victory for McDonald sets a positive tone for the week, and it underscores their capabilities on both ends of the court. Brookfield, despite the loss, exhibited resilience and showcased their own strengths in the match. CANFIELD KEEPS THE PRESSURE ON THE SPARTANS

BOARDMAN OH- In an electrifying girls’ soccer matchup, Canfield continued their impressive season by securing a commanding 4-1 victory over Boardman. With this win, Canfield extended their undefeated streak to 8-0-1, further solidifying their reputation as a formidable force in the league.

Canfield’s goal scorers showcased their offensive prowess in this match, with Hanna Wahib leading the charge by netting two goals. The dynamic duo of Maci Toporcer and Lexi Toporcer each contributed a goal, highlighting the team’s depth in attack. Wahib, Maci Toporcer, and Vivian Nohra played pivotal roles in setting up these scoring opportunities, registering assists that showcased their playmaking abilities.

Boardman managed to find the back of the net courtesy of Sarah Blasco, demonstrating their resilience in the face of Canfield’s formidable defense.

The goalkeepers also played crucial roles in this match. Canfield’s Lolo Padgett made a solid contribution with 1 save, ensuring that Boardman’s scoring opportunities were limited. On the other side, Boardman’s Faith Walston put up an impressive performance with 7 saves, despite facing a relentless offensive onslaught from Canfield.

One of the most telling statistics of the game was the shot count, where Canfield asserted their dominance by outshooting Boardman 25-2. This offensive onslaught showcased Canfield’s ability to control the tempo of the match and create numerous scoring opportunities.

JOHNSTON JUST GETS IT DONE

ASHTABULA OH- Gabbie Johnston, the junior outside hitter for St. John’s, has not only been a statistical powerhouse on the court since she first stepped onto the volleyball scene but has also evolved into a true leader for her team, both on and off the court. As she continues to mature into her junior year, her growth and contributions have become indispensable to the 10-1 St. John’s team.

In her sophomore season in 2022, Johnston had a standout year, showcasing her prowess as an offensive and defensive force. She recorded an impressive 278 kills, averaging 3.2 per set, a testament to her ability to deliver powerful and precise hits when her team needed them most. Her defensive capabilities were equally impressive, with 358 digs to her name, averaging a remarkable 13.3 per match. Additionally, Johnston displayed her serving skills with 56 aces, making her a multifaceted asset to the team.

As the 2023 season unfolds, Johnston has continued to shine. Through 11 matches, she has already amassed an impressive 117 kills and is currently hitting at an impressive .249 percentage, showcasing her consistency and accuracy at the net. Her defensive contributions remain steadfast, with 146 digs and an average of 13.5 per match, reaffirming her role as a reliable backcourt presence. Notably, Johnston is also making her mark from the service line with 44 aces to her name.

One remarkable milestone lies within Johnston’s reach: 1000 career digs. She needs just 133 more to achieve this significant accomplishment, a testament to her dedication and tenacity on the court.

KUHN BECOMES PROGRAM ASSIST LEADER IN CHAMPION’S DECISIVE WIN

In a commanding display of soccer prowess, Champion High School’s girls’ soccer team left no doubt about their dominance as they overwhelmed Brookfield with a stunning 11-0 victory. The Champions’ relentless attack left their opponents struggling to keep up, resulting in an impressive goal tally that left spectators in awe.

Champion’s goal-scoring heroes were in top form, with Taylor Kuhn leading the charge with an astonishing five goals. Her clinical finishing was nothing short of remarkable and proved to be a constant thorn in Brookfield’s side. Maylee Nadaud added two more goals to the tally, showcasing her scoring prowess alongside Mia Nadaud, Kaliyah Gray, Grayson Knoske, and Mackenzie Royal, who each contributed a goal of their own.

Assists were also aplenty in Champion’s scintillating performance. Taylor Kuhn not only lit up the scoreboard but also played the role of provider, contributing two assists and breaking the program record for career assists in the process. Alivia Danowski, Savanna Lefkowitz, Grayson Knoske, and Maylee Nadaud also joined in on the assist action, showcasing the team’s remarkable chemistry and unselfish play.

Defensively, Champion was rock-solid, with Allison Henderlight making a single save, ensuring that Brookfield’s attempts to claw back into the game were firmly denied. On the other side of the field, Brookfield’s Jasmine Hubbard put up a valiant effort with an impressive 14 saves, despite the relentless offensive onslaught she faced.

RAMS MAKE CRESTVIEW EARN IT

In a thrilling volleyball showdown, the undefeated Crestview team faced an intense challenge from Mineral Ridge but ultimately maintained their perfect record with a hard-fought victory in four sets. The final scores were 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, and 25-18, showcasing the relentless determination of both teams on the court. Notably, the second set marked the first time this season that Crestview had conceded a set to their opponents, making the match all the more exhilarating.

Crestview’s standout performers were instrumental in securing this remarkable win. Abbey Emch delivered an impressive performance with 22 kills, 5 blocks, and 7 digs, demonstrating her dominance at the net. Grace Auer displayed her versatility with a triple-double, contributing 20 kills, 23 assists, and 18 digs. Equally impressive was Lainy Auer, who also achieved a triple-double, tallying 13 kills, 21 assists, and 10 digs. Julia Blasko made her presence felt with 13 digs and 3 kills, rounding out Crestview’s formidable lineup.

Mineral Ridge, though narrowly falling short, showcased their talent and determination throughout the match. Faith Schneider had a standout performance with 25 kills and 15 digs, achieving a double-double and proving to be a formidable offensive force. Ava Hulett also achieved a double-double, recording 19 kills and 23 digs, showcasing her all-around skills. Samantha Aulet’s exceptional playmaking was evident with 55 assists, highlighting her role as a key facilitator for Mineral Ridge.

As both teams look ahead, they will soon return to conference play. Crestview is set to face Liberty in their next match, where they will aim to continue their undefeated streak. Mineral Ridge, on the other hand, will travel to Jackson Milton, seeking to rebound from this hard-fought battle and secure a conference victory.

POLAND, OH – Coming off another dominating victory in week five, head coach Tom Pavlansky and the Poland Bulldogs are firing on all cylinders. In week five the Bulldogs traveled up to Hubbard and came away with a huge 53-0 victory. Up next for Poland will be an extremely important NE8 battle with the South Range Raiders at home on Friday night!
