OH MY, O’HORO

BOARDMAN, OH – The Boardman Spartans football team has always been looked at as one of the powerhouses in the Youngstown area that always produces great talent on the field and this year is no different. The Spartans have a very talented team and many believe this team can achieve something very special as the season goes on. This mindset is not only adopted by the fans of the Mahoning Valley but by the team and staff as well. Although they feel like they can achieve that goal, Coach Antram has developed a team that takes it day by day and pieces the little things together because they all know that winning in the little aspects of the game will lead to big success such as winning the state championship. The way this day by day mindset is built is by having great leadership and a passion or drive to do whatever it takes to win no matter what the situation is. No one embodies that concept more than running back, Sean O’Horo.

Sean is currently in his senior season and by no means is he willing to be done playing football for the Spartans. His leadership and play has led the Spartans to a huge opening week victory over Cardinal Mooney, 28-7. In that victory, Sean was able to carry the ball 16 times for 204 yards and impose his will on the defensive end as well. By O’Horo’s ability to lead by example on the football field, he is able to bring all his teammates together and get them on the same page to get focused to go to battle for each other every single night. Sean is not only able to showcase his own talents on the field, he is also able to be a vocal leader and by doing so he is always the loudest player on the field. Whether that is always talking and identifying different schemes and plays on defense, to helping get everyone in the right positions to get a stop, cheering on his teammates when he is on the sideline getting a breather, or even celebrating on the field when someone makes a big play! When talking to Sean, he is always the first to give his teammates credit and truly believes in the team first mentality as he supports all his teammates and always gives them credit for helping him succeed on the field as well as helping the team achieve greatness as well!

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, had the opportunity to talk with Sean this week at Cocca’s Pizza in Boardman to discuss the Spartans week one win, what his goals are for this season, what his plans are for after high school, a rapid-fire question session to see what makes Sean the player and person he is, and much more!

JAYS TRAVEL TO PICK UP SEASON OPENING VICTORY

TOLEDO, OH- When Jackson Milton’s opening game against Chalker was canceled due to low numbers, it was important to Head Coach Nate Brode and Athletic Director, Dan Crish to find a game.  There’s something special being built in North Jackson, and to miss a game was not acceptable.

So, when Hilltop’s game was canceled against a school in Sandusky, the two staffs took a bad situation and created a fantastic opportunity for both teams.  They would move the game to the Glass Bowl at the University of Toledo.  A once in a lifetime opportunity for both schools.

So on a Saturday, Jackson-Milton traveled to the University of Toledo for an afternoon game vs the West-Unity Millcreek Hilltop Cadets. JM secured a victory over Hilltop by a score of 29-12 to start the season 1-0.

The leading passer for the team was junior quarterback Alex Schiavi who threw for 72 yards on 7 completions.  The Jays rushing attack was led by senior Ethan Evans who finished with 15 attempts for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns, followed by freshmen RB Keegan White who carried the ball 3 times for 59 yards including 1 touchdown. Evans also led the Jays in receiving yards (22) and receptions (2). Defensively the Jays played extremely well forcing the Cadets into 5 turnovers (3 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions).

Leading the Jays defensively were senior defensive lineman Chase DeDomenic (13 tackles, 1 sack, 4 tackles for loss) and Jake Gross (12 tackles 1 sack, 6 tackles for loss). Juniors Owen McDevitt and Ezekiel Brock each recorded an interception while Evans, Kaden Carlton and Tanner Butler all recorded a fumble recovery. Sophomore kicker Sam Conn hit a 29-yard field goal in addition to two extra points in the contest.
