DRAGONS FALL IN HIGH SCORING BATTLE

Gates Mills, OH- In a high-scoring affair, the Lakeside Dragons fell to the Hawken Hawks 60-38 in a game filled with explosive plays on both sides. Lakeside received the opening kickoff, but an early interception by Hawken’s Ryan Whiting changed the momentum. Whiting’s 40-yard pick-six gave the Hawks a quick 6-0 lead, although the two-point conversion attempt failed.

Lakeside answered back quickly, as quarterback Omar Ambriz connected with Matt Wagner for a 41-yard touchdown strike, leveling the score at 6-6 with 7:44 left in the first quarter. However, Hawken regained the lead with Jordan Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful two-point conversion, making it 14-6 in favor of the Hawks.

The second quarter was packed with scoring. Hawken’s Charlie Mallet connected with Ryan Whiting on a double reverse pass for a 31-yard touchdown, pushing the Hawks ahead 20-6. Lakeside’s Nate Bartone powered through for a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 20-14, but Hawken’s ground game proved unstoppable. Johnson added two more rushing touchdowns before the half, and a late 21-yard touchdown pass from Donovan Moorhead to Keni Obi extended the Hawks’ lead to 40-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Lakeside showed resilience as Ambriz hit Devan Miller for a 61-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 46-25. Despite Lakeside’s efforts, Hawken’s Jordan Johnson and Donovan Moorhead kept the Hawks comfortably ahead, with Johnson scoring his fourth touchdown of the night and Moorhead finding Whiting for another touchdown pass.

Lakeside’s Miller continued to shine, adding a 64-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and Ambriz capped off his impressive night with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Miller, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hawken’s high-powered offense. Moorhead’s final touchdown pass to Obi sealed the deal for Hawken, who cruised to a 60-38 victory.

Lakeside (1-4) will look to bounce back in Week 6 when they host the Madison Blue Streaks (3-2) to kick off CVC Lake Division play. Meanwhile, Hawken (4-1) will hit the road to face the West Geauga Wolverines (2-3) in their CVC Valley Division opener.

HAWKS SOAR PAST WARRIORS WITH SOLID RUSHING ATTACK

East Ashtabula, OH- The Edgewood Warriors hoped to even their record in their second home game of the season. However, the visiting Hawken Hawks had different plans, delivering a commanding 35-7 victory that set the tone for what might be a turning point in their season.

The game started with a spark for the Hawks, as Jordan Johnson’s electrifying 46-yard run on the opening play stunned the home crowd and gave a glimpse of what was to come. Just a few plays later, quarterback Donovan Moorhead connected with wide receiver Julian Javoris for a 9-yard touchdown pass, and Javoris tacked on the extra point—his first of five on the night.
The Hawks’ offense showed no signs of slowing down. On their next possession, Moorhead launched a 73-yard bomb to Charlie Mallet, making it 14-0 before Edgewood could even catch its breath. The first-quarter barrage didn’t stop there. Kene Obi, a standout in the Hawks’ ground game, broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run, putting Hawken up 21-0 as the opening quarter ended.
With their defense keeping the Warriors off balance, Hawken extended its lead just before halftime when Moorhead and Mallet linked up again, this time on a 7-yard touchdown pass. The halftime score stood at a lopsided 28-0, with the Warriors left searching for answers.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle to move the ball, as defenses tightened and turnovers loomed. But Hawken put the game completely out of reach early in the fourth quarter when Moorhead found Mallet for the third time, sealing the game with a 7-yard touchdown pass and stretching the lead to 35-0.
In the game’s final moments, with less than a minute to play, the Edgewood Warriors managed to avoid a shutout. Quarterback Nate Stewart connected with Devon Sanchez on a 50-yard touchdown pass, putting Edgewood on the board and giving the home fans something to cheer about in an otherwise difficult night.
Though the late score from Stewart to Sanchez was a bright spot for the Warriors, it came too late to change the outcome. Still, it may provide some momentum as Edgewood (1-3) heads on the road to face West Geauga next week, hoping for a bounce-back performance. Meanwhile, Hawken (3-1) will aim to continue their winning ways as they prepare to host the Lakeside Dragons.
For the Warriors, the perfect weather couldn’t stop the storm that was the Hawken Hawks, whose balanced attack of long passes, powerful runs, and solid defense overwhelmed them from start to finish. Edgewood will need to regroup quickly if they hope to turn things around in the weeks ahead.

WARRIORS STUMBLE ON THE ROAD

Gates Mills, OH- In an action-packed game, the Hawken Hawks clashed with the Edgewood Warriors in an exciting battle on the gridiron.

The first quarter saw the Hawken Hawks off to a blazing start, with Jordan Johnson’s 2-yard touchdown run and Julian Javoris’s successful extra point kick, giving them an early lead of 7-0. The Hawks continued to dominate with Donovan Moorhead connecting with Tommy Wright for a 2-yard touchdown pass, followed by another successful extra point, extending their lead to 14-0. The first quarter fireworks didn’t stop there as Jordan Johnson returned a punt for an impressive 50-yard touchdown, and with the extra point, the Hawks surged ahead 21-0. Edgewood finally got on the board when Tony Hall found Jacob Ernst with a 6-yard touchdown pass, but they missed the extra point, making it 21-6 in favor of the Hawks.

The first quarter ended with a bang when Kene Obi intercepted Tony Hall’s pass and raced 48 yards for a pick-six, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, giving the Hawks an imposing 29-6 lead.

The second quarter witnessed Edgewood’s Hunter Braat intercepting Donovan Moorhead’s pass and returning it 65 yards for a touchdown. Although they failed to convert the 2-point attempt, Edgewood closed the gap to 29-12. However, Hawken quickly responded with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Moorhead to Obi, accompanied by an extra point, reestablishing their dominance at 36-18. Jordan Johnson’s incredible 62-yard run for a touchdown, coupled with a successful extra point, extended Hawken’s lead to 43-18 at halftime.

The third quarter saw Edgewood making a valiant effort with Tony Hall connecting with Jacob Ernst for a 16-yard touchdown pass, but they couldn’t convert the 2-point attempt, leaving the score at 43-24. Hawken answered back with Lucas Brandt’s 16-yard touchdown run, followed by a good extra point, making it 50-24. Edgewood refused to back down, with Tony Hall finding Anthony Hunt for a 17-yard touchdown pass, along with a successful 2-point conversion, closing the gap to 50-32.

In the fourth quarter, Jordan Johnson added another touchdown for Hawken with a 10-yard run, although they missed the extra point, resulting in a score of 56-32. Edgewood rallied once more, with Tony Hall connecting with Anthony Hunt on a 52-yard touchdown pass, but the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the final score at 56-38 in favor of the Hawken Hawks.

With this impressive victory, the Hawken Hawks improved to a 3-1 record, setting the stage for an exciting matchup against the Conneaut Spartans in week 4. Meanwhile, the Edgewood Warriors, also at 3-1, will prepare to host the Chagrin Falls Tigers in their upcoming contest

RAIDERS SEE THEIR SEASON MEET ITS END

MASSILLON OH- It was a good old fashioned pitcher’s duel in Thursday’s Regional semifinal between South Range and Hawken. Neither team scored until the 5th inning. All the scoring actually came in that 5th as the Raiders struck for one in the top half, and Hawken answered with two in the bottom to secure the 2-1 victory.

South Range only managed 3 hits against Hawken’s pitching. Shane Lindstrom had a single and a RBI for the Raiders. Also getting hits were Corey Penick, and Logan Cormell.

Billy Skripac did everything he could on the mound for the Raiders. He struck out 8 and allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits.

South Range ends their impressive season with a 22-5 record, and owners of back to back district championships. Hawken advances to the regional final tomorrow against Waynedale.
