BOMBERS CANT FIND THE RUNWAY AGAINST AQUINAS

By Matt Maher

WINDHAM, OH – The Bombers wrapped up their regular season with a home game against St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday night where Windham fought hard to try and pull together a win for their seniors on senior night and the fans who made it out. While both teams played a tight game where both defense and offense matched it would be the visiting Knights who would run away with the 26-24 victory.

Both teams came out playing a bit of a sloppy game with turnovers and hard shots attempted but that makes sense given that both teams were coming off of 2-game losing streaks and both wanted to go into tournament play with a win, they were nervous and their drive to win showed clearly. The Quarter started with a Janya Jeter 2 and then 5 more points from K’Lynn Carter who found the games first 3 and got a nice floater as well. Windham only found 4 points with 2 coming from Briah Daniel and the other 2 from Abby Simpson.

Both teams kept their pace in the second quarter with Aquinas finding 7 more points to Windhams 5. All 7 of the Knights points this frame came from K’Lynn Carter who was shooting like a superstar for her team with three made 2’s and 1-of-2 made free throws she needed to be Windham’s main target to defend after halftime. Daniel found 3 more points for the Bombers with a 2 and 1-of-2 made free throws while Lorena De Oliveria found her first 2 points off of a rebound.

Windham responded in the 3rd quarter with an 8-5 edge over Aquinas. While the Bombers found more offense this quarter and even held a lead for the first time all night, Aquinas had a good enough first half and did enough out of the break to take a 19-17 lead into the 4th. Carter continued to lead the Knights this time with just 3 points with 1 from the line and 2 in the paint. Daniel scored half of her team’s points with two 2’s while De Oliveria and Mariah Woods both found scores inside the arc.

The 4th quarter was set to be an energetic conclusion to our already close game and the 7-7 score proved that. Jeter took over this quarter with 5 points while Carter added 2 more on her impressive night. The Bombers staged a late comeback that was spearheaded by Abby Simpsons 3 that got Windham back within 2 but despite a few turnovers going the Bombers way they just couldn’t get past the pressure they had to find the equalizing 2 points and fell short of the comeback.

The Bombers played a very close and even game against Aquinas but just couldn’t figure out how to stop K’Lynn Carter who had 17 points on the night which led all scorers. Briah Daniel led the Bombers with 10 points while Lorena De Oliveria sat 2nd with 6. The focus for both teams now shifts to tournament play where both teams will start their postseason journey on on February 21st with Aquinas taking on East Canton and Windham playing Newton Falls, both games tip off at 7:00PM and if both teams win in the first round they would meet again in the 2nd round where Windham would love to get another jab at these Knights.

CARDINALS CANT HANDLE WALSH

By Matt Maher

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Cardinals are a week away from tournament play and they welcomed a great challenge and test to town in the form of the Walsh Jesuit Warriors to see how they’d handle a tough opponent and while the 58-42 loss wasn’t ideal the Cardinals showed glimmers of good defense and some offensive mistakes that can be corrected given the right coaching and time during practice and their last regular season game come Thursday.

Walsh Jesuit jumped out to a hot start against the Cardinals but Mooney stuck with their game plan and kept it close only trailing 11-8 after one frame. Walsh was led by Taylor Angielski who found 5 points including the first and only 3 of the game to this point. Mooney countered with Sophia Diorio who found 6 points all in the paint while Talecia Huff found the other 2 points. While it stayed close early Walsh turned off cruise control and showed Mooney how they played ball.

16-7 was the difference in the second with Walsh getting most of their scoring from one source while Mooney tried to spread it out amongst each other. The Individual who scored 8 points in the quarter for Walsh was Kara Courtad who pushed her way through the paint either with the ball or to get in position for a good pass and she didn’t seem to miss much. Katie Pregibon had the most points at the end of the quarter with 3 while Huff and Zanijahray Wright combined for the other 4 points. The Warriors found holes in the Cardinals defense and took advantage while Mooney found themselves in great scoring spots but would over shoot the ball which would result in a big rebound things would need to change after halftime.

Cardinal Mooney has shown us to be a good second half team all season and you could certainly say that stayed true on Monday night. In the third the Cardinals trailed 15-11 in scoring but that score was the first time they found double digits in a quarter so you could tell this team was starting to heat up. Kara Estefan for Walsh led her team with 5 points including a 3 and a perfect 2-for-2 from the stripe. The Warriors would go 4-for-6 from the line as a team in the first quarter we got to see an abundance of free throws.

Sophia Diorio came out of the break on a mission and that mission was a successful one as she found 8 points with a made 3, two 2’s and 1-of-2 free throws scored. Huff found herself with 3 points all from the stripe. Mooney would go 4-for-8 from the line leaving 4 points on the floor that could have tied them in 3rd quarter scoring with the Warriors.

The fourth quarter was Mooney’s quarter with a scoreline that went their way and a more sound offense and even defense the Cardinals would end the game with a 16-14 advantage in scoring in the final quarter. Cesily Sutton found herself leading Walsh with 6 points including a long 3 that would be impressive on any team. Talecia Huff took the torch and led her team with 7 points with two field goals and going 3-for-6 from the stripe. Sophia Diorio found herself with 5 more points as well.

While the Cardinals may have won the 4th they couldn’t score enough to take the game. Sophia Diorio finished with 19 points which was the most among all players in this game while Talecia Huff finished with 14 which was tied for 2nd with Walsh’s Kara Courtad.

Both teams looked about even in defensive coverage and offensive chances. The issue for Mooney was that they shot the ball too hard which resulted in the ball going over the rim or too hard off the backboard and landing right in the palms of the Warriors who were waiting for it. If Mooney can figure out the right amount of strength to put on their shots they should have no problem in their final game of the season and should play a good game against Champion in tournament play.

Walsh Jesuit (11-9) will finish off their season at home when they host CVCA on February 14th at 7:00PM while Cardinal Mooney (8-13) will end their campaign at Hubbard on February 15th at 7:00PM.

POTTERS END THE REGULAR SEASON IN STYLE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In a highly anticipated matchup, East Liverpool showcased their defensive prowess as they secured a commanding 40-27 victory over United. From the opening tip-off, the Potters’ defense proved to be the difference-maker, stifling United’s offensive efforts throughout the game.

Leading the charge for East Liverpool was Kenzie Headley, who displayed her scoring prowess with an impressive 16 points. Ayla Brown contributed 9 points to bolster the offense, while Reagan Edwards, Aynsley Galeoti, and Dacianelle Andrews each added 5 points to round out a balanced scoring effort for the Potters.

Despite a valiant effort from United, led by Grace Knight with 14 points, they struggled to find openings against East Liverpool’s suffocating defense.

With this win, East Liverpool concludes their regular season with momentum, boasting a record of 13-9 as they prepare for postseason play. Their first tournament matchup is set for February 24th, as they host Philip in what promises to be an exciting contest.

Meanwhile, United, with a record of 15-7, will await their first tournament game on February 21st, hosting VASJ.

SIX YEARS OF NE8 PLAY, SIX POLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

POLAND OH- In a fitting conclusion to their regular season, Poland’s senior night celebration was filled with jubilation as they clinched their sixth consecutive NE8 championship and their seventh straight league championship overall (AAC title in 2017). Facing off against Hubbard, Poland delivered a commanding performance, emerging victorious with a final score of 40-26.

Leading the charge for Poland was senior standout Elliana Thompson, who showcased her scoring prowess with an impressive 16 points. While Thompson led the scoring charge, Poland’s victory was a testament to the team’s collective effort, with seven other Bulldogs contributing 4 points or less to secure the win.

Despite Hubbard’s valiant effort, led by Cara Green with 9 points and Khamyah Howell with 6 points, they couldn’t overcome Poland’s dominance on the court.

With this win, Poland capped off their regular season in style, finishing with a record of 14-8 and solidifying their status as NE8 champions outright. Their remarkable consistency is highlighted by the fact that they have only shared the NE8 championship once in the six years of the conference.

Looking ahead, Poland sets their sights on the upcoming tournament, with their first game scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at Pymatuning Valley.

Meanwhile, Hubbard, with a record of 6-15, prepares for their final regular-season game on Thursday as they host Mooney.
