BOMBERS CANT FIND THE RUNWAY AGAINST AQUINAS

By Matt Maher

WINDHAM, OH – The Bombers wrapped up their regular season with a home game against St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday night where Windham fought hard to try and pull together a win for their seniors on senior night and the fans who made it out. While both teams played a tight game where both defense and offense matched it would be the visiting Knights who would run away with the 26-24 victory.

Both teams came out playing a bit of a sloppy game with turnovers and hard shots attempted but that makes sense given that both teams were coming off of 2-game losing streaks and both wanted to go into tournament play with a win, they were nervous and their drive to win showed clearly. The Quarter started with a Janya Jeter 2 and then 5 more points from K’Lynn Carter who found the games first 3 and got a nice floater as well. Windham only found 4 points with 2 coming from Briah Daniel and the other 2 from Abby Simpson.

Both teams kept their pace in the second quarter with Aquinas finding 7 more points to Windhams 5. All 7 of the Knights points this frame came from K’Lynn Carter who was shooting like a superstar for her team with three made 2’s and 1-of-2 made free throws she needed to be Windham’s main target to defend after halftime. Daniel found 3 more points for the Bombers with a 2 and 1-of-2 made free throws while Lorena De Oliveria found her first 2 points off of a rebound.

Windham responded in the 3rd quarter with an 8-5 edge over Aquinas. While the Bombers found more offense this quarter and even held a lead for the first time all night, Aquinas had a good enough first half and did enough out of the break to take a 19-17 lead into the 4th. Carter continued to lead the Knights this time with just 3 points with 1 from the line and 2 in the paint. Daniel scored half of her team’s points with two 2’s while De Oliveria and Mariah Woods both found scores inside the arc.

The 4th quarter was set to be an energetic conclusion to our already close game and the 7-7 score proved that. Jeter took over this quarter with 5 points while Carter added 2 more on her impressive night. The Bombers staged a late comeback that was spearheaded by Abby Simpsons 3 that got Windham back within 2 but despite a few turnovers going the Bombers way they just couldn’t get past the pressure they had to find the equalizing 2 points and fell short of the comeback.

The Bombers played a very close and even game against Aquinas but just couldn’t figure out how to stop K’Lynn Carter who had 17 points on the night which led all scorers. Briah Daniel led the Bombers with 10 points while Lorena De Oliveria sat 2nd with 6. The focus for both teams now shifts to tournament play where both teams will start their postseason journey on on February 21st with Aquinas taking on East Canton and Windham playing Newton Falls, both games tip off at 7:00PM and if both teams win in the first round they would meet again in the 2nd round where Windham would love to get another jab at these Knights.
