CARDINALS BRAVE THE COLD

POLAND OH- Mooney improved to 2-0 after defeating Poland 19-7 on Thursday night. Ella Szalay led offense with 9 goals, 2 assists, and 9 draw controls. Angelee Blasko had 3 goals and 4 ground balls. Natalie Blasko had 2 goals and an assist, while Maria Pecchia also added 2 goals.

Sophia Rotunno was again a force on defense with 6 caused turnovers, 8 ground balls, 2 goals, and 1 assist. Frankie Cassese rounded out scoring with 1 goal. Alyssa Ray had 7 saves in goal.

Mooney returns to play on Tuesday, March 26 for their home opener against Canfield at 6:30pm.

MOONEY STARTS SEASON WITH A WIN

Mooney Lacrosse begins their season 1-0, after a 13-7 win against Green on the road. Angelee Blasko and Ella Szalay led the way with 4 goals and 1 assist each. Frankie Cassese had 2 goals and 5 ground balls. Natalie Blasko and Maria Pecchia each added a goal.

Sophia Rotunno was an absolute game changer on defense and getting momentum for the team with 8 caused turnovers, 7 ground balls, and finished it off with 1 goal and 2 assists. Alyssa Ray had 5 saves in goal. Mooney heads to Poland tomorrow for a 6:30 game.

CARDINAL MOONEY GIRLS LACROSSE COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TONI CHAHINE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the area. If you don’t believe that, all you have to do is look at the increase in numbers that Cardinal Mooney’s girls program has experienced in the last two seasons. Last year with a handful of players who were picking up the sport for the first time, Mooney still found success.  Head coach Toni Chahine knows that now her program is ahead of schedule and she can focus on building IQ and fine tuning the details to turn this program even closer to greatness.

Coach Chahine took the time to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about what to expect out of the program this season. They also talk about balancing coaching two varsity sports, and much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Toni Chahine.

INSIDE THE CAPTAIN’S QUARTERS

CANFIELD OH- Being a captain on a team is no joking matter. It’s not simply an extra C on your jersey. As a captain like it or not, the team relies on you to keep them on the right track.  When it comes to the senior captain for Canfield Lacrosse in Josie Sipe, you would be hard pressed to find a better person to steer the ship.  Sipe has been working on her lacrosse craft for a long time, and that drive to be great ripples through the program. A eternal drive to succeed is so important to sustaining a successful program the way the Cardinals have been. Josie has been able to learn how to lead from great seniors before her, and now she is returning the favor to the youth on the roster now.  Josie’s finger prints on the team will be seen for years after she graduates.

When she graduates Sipe will be heading to Ashland to continue her lacrosse career. It’s no surprise that one of the best defenders in the region is going to be playing at the next level.

ON TO THE NEXT ROUND FOR CANFIELD

The Canfield Lady Cards lacrosse team played Boardman Wednesday night at Canfield High School in the second round of the OHSAA lacrosse tournament. The Cards came away with a 13-3 win and look to keep the momentum and energy going as they move forward in playoffs.

Offensively, the cards were lead by Radhika Uppal and Ashlyn Elford who each had three goals. Olivia Hunter had two goals and one assist, Ashleigh Haas had two goals, Kayleigh Carney had one goal and an assist, Abby Crowe had one goal, Josie Sipe had one goal, and Karley Gerst had one assist.

The Cards were flying on defense and caused the Spartans to throw five interceptions. The ground ball game was won by the Cards and was lead by Karley Gerst with four. Victoria Levonyak, Olivia Hunter, Radhika Uppal, and Abby Crowe each had four ground balls as

The Cardinals will now play Uniontown Lake Saturday at noon at Canfield High School.

RAY ALWAYS SAVES THE DAY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- If you’re talking about a sport the deals with a goal, you can’t do much without a goalie.  The idea that one of your players is pretty much the last line of defense between your goal and a ball, or puck hurling your way can terrify some people right out of playing the position. That’s why every coach we talk to on YSN tells us that goalies have a special mindset. It’s not for everyone.  With that being said, it must ne impossible to step on the field and just pick up a goalie jersey and be an immediate impact tight? Wrong. For Cardinal’s Mooney’s net blocker Alyssa Ray she has gone from knowing nothing about lacrosse to 300 career saves in just 2 seasons.  The Cardinals main stay in front of the goal never hesitated when head coach Toni Chahine challenged her to fill a role for her team.  Now, just two seasons in the junior has sights set on a remarkable 500 saves in a career. Sitting at over 300 now, and still with one season to play that goal seems more and more probable by the day.

Ray was kind enough to check in with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her journey to a lacrosse goalie.  They discuss how much she’s been able to learn about the sport, what drove her to try it in the first place, and so much more. MOONEY DOMINATES IN BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

Mooney lacrosse makes a dominant win over Canfield 17-1 on Saturday afternoon, right in time for the playoffs.

Ella Szalay led with 6 goals, 5 assists, 9 draw controls, Addison Stacy had 5 goals. Natalie Blasko had 2 goals and 4 draw controls. Peyton Campbell, Frankie Cassesse, Angelee Blasko, and Maria Pecchia all had one goal.

Defense had 14 caused turnovers. Mooney will host Akron Hoban in the playoffs Wednesday at 6pm at Cardinal Mooney.

CARDINALS KNOW HOW TO CELEBRATE THEIR SENIORS

CANFIELD OH- The Canfield girls lacrosse team played Western Reserve Academy last night and came away with a 11-5 win. This win pushes the cards to a double digit winning season going 10-3.

Offensively, the cards had great chemistry and patience on attack. Karley Gerst had five goals and an assist, Radhika Uppal had three goals and an assist, Ashleigh Haas had two goals, Olivia Hunter had two assists, and Ashlyn Elford had one goal.

Defensively, Victoria Levonyak helped clean up the chaos by leading the team in ground balls with four. The Cards limited the Pioneers to just eleven shots on goal while also causing nine turnovers. Lainie Modarelli in goal had six saves on the night.

MOONEY SNAPS OUT OF SHORT SLUMP

Mooney Lacrosse bounced back from a post spring-break slump on Tuesday night. The Cardinals beat Boardman 15-5, and had 8 different people contribute to leaderboard. Ella Szalay led with 4 goals, 3 assists, 9 draw controls, and 4 caused turnovers. Addison Stacy also had 4 goals and 4 draw controls. Sarah Schaller had 2 goals, while Sophia Graziano had 2 assists. Maria Pecchia had a goal and an assist. While Peyton Campbell, Frankie Cassesse, Natalie Blasko, and Molly Simons all had a goal. Alyssa Ray had 8 saves in goal.

Mooney will host Green for their senior night on Thursday at 6:30pm.

CARDINALS NOT BOTHERED BY BUSY WEEKEND

Three games in two days was not a problem for the Canfield girls lacrosse team.

The Cards were away at Laurel Friday night and came away with a 15-3 win. The team had a quick turn around and played Western Reserve Academy and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Saturday at Hawken. While battling the elements and exhaustion the Cards beat WRA 12-10 and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin 6-5.

Offensively, over the three games, the Cards were led by Karley Gerst who had ten goals and an assist. Ashlyn Elford added seven goals, Ashleigh Haas had six goals and three assists, Radhika Uppal had five goals and an assist, Olivia Hunter added four goals while Abby Crowe rounded out the scoring and had a goal.

Defensively, the cards stepped up their defense and held the other teams to limited shots on goal. Maddie Accordino led the defense with eight ground balls and five interceptions. Josie Sipe had five ground balls and four interceptions, Victoria Levonyak had four ground balls and one interception, and Mia Gaffney had three ground balls and one interception. Mady Hecker in goal saved thirty shots on goal.

The Cardinals improve to 9-2 after the long weekend.
