RAIDERS ONE WIN AWAY

AKRON OH- Once again a South Range softball tournament game got pushed back due to weather, forcing the Raider faithful to wait one more day. Well, South Range made it well worth the wait as they powered their way to a 5-1 win over Johnstown to earn a spot in the Division 3 State Championship.

The game did not start off on a great note for senior pitcher Bree Kohler. In the first inning, Kohler who only had 19 walks on the season coming into the day saw three hitters reach via the free pass in the first inning. With the bases loaded and 2 outs Kohler induced an infield pop out to get out of the jam. Kohler quickly righted the ship in the 2nd putting Johnstown down in order.

Kohler’s speed on the base paths got the Raiders on the board first in the third. Kohler singled to lead off the inning, was moved over by a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a throwing error while stealing 3rd.

That’s where the score would stay until the 5th inning when Kohler knocked in a run this time around with a single that scored Jamie Feren. Kohler was later caught trying to steal 2nd.

After striking out the first two hitters in the bottom of the 5th, Kohler gave up her first hit of the game. It was a powerful one. Julia Montie blasted a no doubt solo shot to dead center to cut the Raider lead in half 2-1.

Momentum seemed to be on the Johnie’s side as they retired the Raiders in order in the 6th, and then loaded the bases again with two outs. Kohler got a clutch strike out to leave the runners stranded, and shift the energy right back to South Range’s dugout.

In the top of the 7th the Raiders would make Johnstown regret not putting the runs up when they could. They put up a 3 spot in the 7th thanks to an error, and a pair of RBI triples from Kohler and Juli Stachowicz.

Now with a 5-1 lead Bree Kohler only allowed one hit in the seventh, securing the win and the Raiders spot in the State Championship.

The final line for Kohler in the circle was 7.0 IP 4 H 1 ER 4 BB 12 K.

Kohler also led the Raiders offense going 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Madison Dado went 1-3 with a run scored. Jamie Feren went 1-1 with a run scored. Gretchen Bartels was credited with an RBI on her suicide squeeze.

South Range advances to the State Championship on Sunday. They will play Sherwood Fairview at 4:00. The game will be held at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

South Range seniors Bree Kohler and Jillian Strecansky both had to miss their graduation ceremony this morning to travel with the team to Akron. They both received their diplomas prior to first pitch on the field from Principal Steve Rohan. Strecansky was a 2021 valedictorian.

TICKET PUNCHED; RAIDERS DODGE LATE RALLY TO HEAD TO STATE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline vs South Range was the match up that every local softball fan wanted from the beginning. They had to wait a while. The two power houses missed each other in the regular season, and went on separate sides of the region in the super district tournament format. Both teams won their way to the regional finals setting up the clash that everyone had been waiting for. On the last day of May, Ursuline and South Range met on the diamond with a trip to the state semifinals on the line. The game did not disappoint, as the Raiders dodged a late seventh inning rally to come out on top 3-2.

Before first pitch, you could feel the anticipation of this matchup in the air. It seemed as if the entire community, fans of the teams or not came out to watch this matchup. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but weather pushed it back a couple more days to the final stroke of May.

As the designated away team, South Range had the opportunity to strike first and put the pressure on. They did just that as Bree Kohler reached on an error, and Reagan Irons singled to right field. With first two Raiders on board, Ursuline got what might have been a breath of air in a out on the base paths, snagging Kohler heading for third. However, Juli Stachowicz put the pressure right back on with a 2 run HR to give the Raiders the early lead.

A big question coming into this game was how Bree Kohler would fair inside the circle against an offense that came in to the game having already scored 319 runs on the season. Ursuline had not been held under 4 runs all year, and had never struck out more than 9 times in a game. Kohler however set the tone from the jump setting the Irish down 1-2-3 in the first.

The Raiders would continue their aggressiveness against Ursuline’s starter Paige Ogden in the second frame. After the first two hitters were retired, Bree Kohler was hit by a pitch, she then took second on a wild pitch. In the middle of the at bat, with Kohler now in scoring position Mike Kernan made his pitching change to Emily Holland. On the first pitch Holland threw, Irons hit a weak ground ball that dribbled down the first base line. Not being sure if it would stay fair, Holland waited until the last second to make a diving effort at securing it and getting it to first, but it was too late to retire Irons, with the slow developing play, Kohler used her speed to come around from second and score ahead of the throw back home. The Raiders now led 3-0.

From that point on, the game would turn into a pitcher’s duel between Kohler and Holland. Two pitchers who are signed to play at the division 1 level in college. In fact, all 5 seniors on the field between the two teams are continuing their softball career in college. Holland only allowed one hit after the second inning, and through 6 Kohler allowed just 3 hits.

It was only a matter of time until this high powered sleeping giant of an offense for Ursuline woke up, and they did with 3 outs remaining in their season. Holland led off the inning with her second hit of the day, it was the third straight inning that Ursuline was able to get their lead off hitter aboard. This time they took advantage. After a strike out, Mia Opalick stepped to the plate carrying a 0-2 mark with 2 strikeouts. It did not matter one bit to her though, as she caught up to a pitch up in the zone and sent it over the wall for an electrifying 2 run HR to cut the Raider lead to 3-2. All of the sudden Kohler was on the ropes, the Irish could tie the game with one swing. She bounced back to get Layni Bednar to fly out to second. Down to their final out, it was up to the Barbato sisters to make something happen for the Irish. Liza Barbato kept the season alive and set the table for her older sister with a single, she would then advance to second on the throwing error. Maris Barbato stepped to the plate as the winning run. The future Toledo Rocket  took one pitch, a ball before stepping back in. Then, a crack of the bat made both fan bases stop breathing for a split second. A fly ball to deep right field. But it just didn’t have enough, junior Taylor Smesko squeezed it just shy of the warning track to start the South Range celebration.

South Range is making their second trip to the state tournament. Their first coming in 2016, where the Raiders were state runners up. They lost to Wheelersburg in the final 8-3. The Raiders are slated to play Johnstown on Friday at 10:00 AM at Firestone Stadium in Akron. Johnstown beat Williamsburg 2-1 in their regional final.

Ursuline finished their season at 27-3 and had one of the most prolific seasons we’ve seen in the area in quite some time. Ursuline scored 321 runs on the year while their pitching staff only allowed 68. Coach Kernan was named YSN coach of the year for his efforts with this group. The Irish spent some time as the number 1 ranked team in the state of Ohio.

The final line for winning pitcher Bree Kohler was 7.0 IP 6 H 2 ER 1 BB 12 K. Stachowicz led the Raiders at the plate going 2-3 with 2 RBI and a HR. Irons was also 2-3 with 1 RBI.

Ogden is credited with the loss for the Irish. She went 1.2 IP 4 H 3 ER 0 BB 2 K. Holland pitched 5.1 IP in relief and gave up only 2 hits. No runs were charged to her, and she struck out 1. Holland was the only Irish hitter with multiple hits, she went 2-3 at the plate. Opalick went 1-3 with 2 RBI and a HR.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE LIKE JORDAN

BELOIT OH- On a Wednesday night in Akron West Branch waited until 8:35 to start their regional semifinal game against Revere. But how does it go? Big players shine brightest under the lights. Well, nothing could more accurately describe Warrior senior Jordan Anderson than being a “big player.” It seems like Anderson has started to pitcher her best in the tournament run. She led the Warriors to a 12-2 win in 6 innings to advance them to a regional final against Wooster Triway.

In that semifinal game, Anderson gave up an early lead when Revere hit a 2 run home run to go up 2-1. Anderson came to the plate the very next inning and knocked in a pair to give the Warriors back a 3-2 lead. With the score the same in the 5th, the rain started to come down at Firestone Stadium. Through the massive obstacle of trying to pitch in the downpour, Anderson muscled through stranding a couple runners to get out of a massive jam. Anderson wasn’t done shining though. West Branch’s offense exploded in the 6th. All of the sudden Anderson came back up as the game winning run. After fouling a ball off herself, and taking sometime to shake it off Anderson launched the walk off home run to right center. The home run saved her from having to pitch another inning, and put the Warriors one step away from entering the state tournament.

Jordan is a part of a fairly experienced West Branch team. That being said, with 2020 being canceled, Anderson and the other leaders on the team still had to find a way to mesh with some new faces on the roster. It’s a good thing Anderson could lean on her past pitching experience as a Warrior. As many people know, no matter what class they are in the pitcher will always be a leader on the field for her team. Jordan just had to become a emotional leader along with her work on the field. With the help of the other seniors and upperclassmen, the Warriors have come together as a unit.

Anderson is signed on to be a division 1 player come next season. She is locked in to being a career at George Mason. It has always been a goal of Anderson’s to play softball in college, and she never had too much of a question where she wanted to go once she visited George Mason.

Anderson kindly gave some of her time this week to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior season. They discuss the regional semifinal win, being an honors student, and much more! There is no better way to get ready for the Warriors regional final than by hearing from their star pitcher in the latest player profile “Everybody Wants To Be Like Jordan.”

IMMERSED IN POWER

BELOIT OH- The West Branch Warriors are the 2021 Division II Jefferson District Champions! The Warriors beat Mogadore Field 3-1 to secure their title. West Branch has made a living of coming up with clutch hits at perfect times all season. A good number of those hits come from junior Sydney Mercer.

Mercer has quickly become one of the most feared hitters in the area. We haven’t seen Sydney in a West Branch uniform since her freshman season in 2019. You could say she is making a solid name for herself now that she’s a upper classmen. While Sydney missed her sophomore season with West Branch, she did get the opportunity to play summer ball with an USSSA team. She had a remarkable summer at the plate for her travel season. She hit over 30 HR for the Pride, and knocked in over 70 RBI. Seeing these kinds of results gave Mercer all the confidence she would need to head into her junior season. Don’t let Sydney’s power at the plate distract you from the fact that she is also a lockdown shortstop. The leader of the infield can always be counted on to make the plays that need to be made.

Mercer is a multi sport athlete at West Branch. Not only does she tear it up on the dirt in the spring, she also racks up plenty of kills during volleyball season, and controls the paint for the Warriors come basketball season. All three programs have raised her standards for excellence. It has also given her the opportunity to build relationships with a multitude of different people on different teams.

Sydney has been a key part of the Warriors tournament run so far. In the district tournament, she has hit .461 and knocked in 4 RBI. She has also scored 3 runs for the Warriors. The Warriors will surely need Mercer to continue her hot streak at the plate to continue their tournament run.

Mercer was kind enough to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week. They discuss the district championship, Sydney’s approach at the plate, and much more. Warrior fans be sure to get ready for Wednesday’s game with this exclusive interview with one of the best power hitters in the area.

YOU CANT SPELL KOHLER WITHOUT A K

CANFIELD OH- South Range has asserted their dominance over area teams yet again in the 2021 softball season. The Raiders have been a mainstay with the top programs in the valley for over a decade. This season, they only brought two seniors to the table. However, one of those seniors is the highly regarded Bree Kohler. Bree has been in the circle giving other teams problems since her freshman season, she has also been committed to Youngstown State since her freshman year.

Kohler knew after the lost 2020 season, that this Raiders team would have a lot of faces that were new to the varsity level. In fact, they only returned 3 starters from their 2019 District Championship team. But the fact that she hasn’t put on the South Range uniform on since her sophomore season did not phase Bree. She has stepped up as a senior leader and has given the young South Range roster plenty of confidence.

South Range won the 2021 district championship in LaBrae over the three time defending champion Champion. Kohler hit the go ahead solo HR in the 5th, and then shut down the Flashes impressive offense the rest of the way. In the game before, Kohler threw a perfect game in South Range’s 10-0 win over Kirtland.

Kohler has put up fantastic numbers this year both in the circle and at the plate. She has started 16 games in the circle and has a record of 15-2. She has thrown 105.1 IP, and has an ERA of 1.19. Kohler has struck out 174, and only walked 17. At the plate Bree leads her team in many categories. Kohler is currently hitting .510 with 11 HR and 60 RBI. Of Bree’s 53 hits, 24 of them are extra base hits. She has 11 triples and 2 doubles. The district championship win over Champion gives Bree a total of 7 district championship medals spanning over 3 sports.

Bree took the time to once again sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig as she has done many times in her athletic career at South Range. They discuss losing her junior season, being a successful athlete in multiple sports, and much much more. Don’t miss the last Player Profile interview with Bree as she closes out her final senior season.

WEST BRANCH TAKES DISTRICT CROWN

JEFFERSON OH- It was a fairly clean game played between Mogadore Field and West Branch on Thursday night. Both teams were locked in with a district championship on the line. West Branch would be the team on top though, as they mixed great pitching with timely hitting to earn a district championship with a 3-1 win.

West Branch got on the board first, in the first the only error of the game let the Warriors score a run. Kiersten Skinner scored the run, as Sydney Mercer reached on the error. It was Mercer scoring Skinner again in the 3rd inning, this time with a RBI single.

Field would get their only run of the day in the next half inning. The Falcons homered on a 1-2 pitch making it 2-1 West Branch.

West Branch would respond in the next half inning though as Jaci Thomas knocked in a RBI single to score Tori McKay. That would be it for the scoring, but it was enough for the Warriors ace pitcher Jordan Anderson.

Anderson got the win in the circle for the Warriors. Her final line was 7.0 IP 4 H 1 ER 0 BB 14 K.

Anderson also had a perfect day at the plate going 2-2 with a walk. Mercer went 1-3 with 2 RBI, and Thomas went 1-3 with 1 RBI.

West Branch advances to the Akron Regional semifinals on Wednesday. The Warriors will play Revere. That game is set for 5:00 at Akron Firestone Stadium.
