RIDGE TAKES SHOWDOWN OF NUMBER ONE SEEDS

CORTLAND OH- It was a heavyweight match up set up for Wednesday night between Mineral Ridge and Lakeview, and it did not disappoint. Mineral Ridge took a back and forth affair in 5 sets (21-25 26-24 20-25 25-20 15-13).

It took each team about a set to shake off nerves in set one, as they traded errors back and forth. Lakeview was able to come up with key plays down the stretch to escape with the set 25-21.

In set two trailing 23-24 Mineral Ridge Head coach Ron Lesko made a gutsy decision bringing in Aliyah Whitaker cold off the bench to serve for senior Jersey Tucker. It worked out nicely for the Rams as Whitaker served up clutch points to help Ridge even the match up at 1-1 with a 26-24 victory in set 2.

Lakeview responded quickly out of the gates jumping out to a 4-0 lead in set 3. Maggie Pavlansky served up the rally getting Ridge out of system. Another back and forth set eventually went to the Bulldogs and gave them a 2-1 lead in the match.

Serving errors were a problem all night for Lakeview, and they really showed up in set 4. Ridge would use it to lead most of the set and hold off a late Lakeview push to take set 4 25-20 and force a set 5.

Lakeview once again jumped out to a strong lead coming off of losing a set. The Bulldogs scored the first 3 points and led 4-1. They kept that lead all the way up to 13-9. Then, Ridge senior setter Danielle Aulet stepped up with huge serves to help the Rams end the set, and the match on a 6-0 run to win set 5 15-13.

The Rams were led by Katelyn Lesko who finished with an impressive double double  with 22 kills, and 24 digs. Danielle Aulet set up 41 assists on the night, and also totaled 21 digs to complete a double double herself. She also served up 5 aces. Morgan Sigley finished with 7 kills.

Tara Lytle led the Bulldogs with 11 kills . She also had 3 blocks, and 3 aces. Pavlansky set up 25 assists, and also served 3 aces. Brooke Schneider led in digs with 23.

Mineral Ridge closes out the season on Thursday hosting Brookfield. Lakeview now awaits tournament action where they are the 1 seed and will host the winner of Southeast vs Mogadore Field.

LAKEVIEW BAYHEM

CORTLAND OH- Being a libero can be quite a challenge for a volleyball player. Being varsity level libero as a sophomore, that is set on expert level. Lakeview sophomore Maddie Bayus has taken that challenge with in stride. Even with her youth, Maddie is a fantastic leader for the Bulldogs in the back row.

The libero position demands vocal leadership, and she is up to the task. Not a lot of people outside of volleyball understand a libero. They are just that player in the different colored jersey. They don’t get the stats everyone looks at, and they don’t make the plays that end up on the highlight reel. However, what a good libero excels at is bringing a calm to the mayhem that strong swings bring to their team’s side of the net. When an opponent puts one down, with speed and power, the libero can pop the ball up and slow the game down.

Maddie leads the team this season with 260 digs, and 4.9 digs per set. She leads what is a very strong back row for the Bulldogs. Bayus is just another example of what makes the Lakeview program great, she accepts her role, and she does her job. The Bulldogs are full of players that do that, and that’s why they play strong as a unit.

Maddie took the time to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to chat about her season. They discussed what being a libero means, what makes her team special, and much more. Bulldogs fans bark for the next volleyball player profile “Lakeview Bayhem.”

REBELS CONTINUE LAKEVIEW’S WOES

COLUMBIANA OH- Lakeview came into Wednesday’s matchup against Crestview trying to recover from their first loss of the season, and their first NE8 loss in over 2 years. However the Rebels made sure the Bulldogs continued to struggle with a dominating win in straight sets (25-16 25-22 25-15).

The Crestview game plan was simple, yet effective. They attacked Lakeview’s setter Maggie Pavlansky, making her take the first touch, and they added on fantastic play from their middle blockers. Executing that plan to perfection the Rebels made it very difficult for Lakeview to get into system. The Bulldogs were definitely dealing with confidence issues. All season other players would step up and move the ball wonderfully when teams would attack Pavlansky. It simply wasn’t happening against the Rebels, and that was a key factor to their struggles.

The Rebels were led by Lucy Montgomery who barely missed another triple double with 16 kills, 10 assists, and 9 digs. Grace Auer was right behind her with 16 assists, 15 digs, and 9 kills. Shelby Rambo played wonderfully in the middle finishing with 8 kills, and 3 blocks.

Lakeview was led by Tara Lytle who finished with 10 kills on the day. 6 of them came in the first set. Brooke Schneider played good defense and had a match-high 21 digs. Pavlansky set up 19 assists.

Crestview heads on to another test as they play Heartland on Saturday. Lakeview will look to change their fortunes as they return home to host South Range.

FALCONS END LAKEVIEW’S IMPRESSIVE STREAK

JEFFERSON OH-Lakeview had not lost a game in the NE8 since September 25th, 2018. That loss was to Jefferson. 2 years later, things came full circle as it was Jefferson who ended Lakeview’s NE8 win streak with a shocking sweep of the Bulldogs (25-19 25-21 25-13).

Shannon Burns led the Falcons offense with 11 kills, and completed a double double with 14 digs. Tory Durkovic set nicely for Jefferson finishing with 13 assists. Taylor Skinner added 6 kills for the Falcons.

Tara Lytle led the Bulldogs with 6 kills, and served up 3 aces.  Teagan Pierce led the back row in digs with 10. Maggie Pavlansky set up 13 assists.

Lakeview hit 27 attack errors on the night. The Bulldog’s NE8 match win streak snaps at 32.

Jefferson will look to carry the momentum from their big win into Hubbard on Thursday. Lakeview’s road doesn’t get any easier as they travel to 15-2 Crestview on Wednesday. That game will be live on YSN.

LYTLE, NOT LITTLE

CORTLAND OH- There are many words that can be used to describe the play of Lakeview’s Tara Lytle. However as close as it is to her name, little is not one of them. Tara comes up big for her team night in and night out. The sophomore consistently leads her team in kills. Power is not her only asset though. Much like the rest of the Lakeview team, Tara is smart, and efficient as a hitter. She stays away from mistakes, especially in the big moments of a match. She is a big reason the Bulldogs are sitting at 14-0. In her sophomore season,

Tara leads the team in kills with 132 at the moment. Tara also hits at .233 hitting percentage, which is pretty solid for an individual stat. Tara also leads her team in service aces, and blocks with 32 aces on the season, and 19 blocks. As you can see, she is a statistical leader in many categories.

Even as a sophomore you can see Tara does not just lead in stats, but also in energy, and emotional strength. Volleyball is such a mental game, and this up and coming star does a tremendous job keeping Lakeview mentally focused. Tara is big time. Big kills, big blocks, big leadership, anything but little.

Tara sat down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to chat. They discuss the programs success, what its been like stepping in to a big role, and much more. Don’t miss this in depth interview with one of the leaders of Lakeview volleyball exclusively on YSN.

JEFFERSON PICKS UP FIRST WIN

CORTLAND OH- The final game of the regular season saw two teams looking for their first win. Jefferson traveled to Lakeview on Friday night and was able to do just that. It was a perfect evening for high school football in Lakeview. Both teams came in hungry for their first win of the season.

Jefferson wasted no time as they were able to take the opening drive right down the field and score. The Falcons had an up tempo game plan and it frustrated the Bulldogs all night. The Lakeview offense was not able to muster any sustained drives in the first half. And their defense had no answer for the no huddle game plan that Jefferson ran.

Jefferson relied on the work horse Daniel Bruckman to do all the heavy lifting Friday night. The senior running back touched the ball 41 times for a total of 214 yards, and 6 touchdowns. He was the shining light for the Falcons. Lakeview fought hard all night and was able to take the opening drive of the second half down for a score. It took them just 2 plays to go 61 yards for the score. The Jefferson D was caught a little off guard and had to regroup following that score. They were able to keep the Bulldogs out of the end zone for the rest of the game. The final score was 49-7. Both these teams are young and will be forces to contend with in the future in the NE8.

Jefferson will travel to Martin’s Ferry in round 1 of the OHSAA playoffs. Lakeview will host Grand Valley in a non playoff game on October 16th.

Lakeview will venture out of the conference and travel to Mooney on Wednesday. Struthers will host Jefferson on Thursday.

CRISH CROSS

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview has experienced a blessing of success over the years. Their dominance in the NE8 is nothing short of extraordinary. That kind of success can only be achieved with a mixture of hard work, talent, and exceptional leadership. For senior Mara Crish, it is a mixture of all of them. Her work ethic is second to none. When the underclassmen get to see how hard she works as a successful senior, it forces them to raise to her level. Mara has exceptional talent to along with her work ethic. Her instincts and volleyball IQ are off the charts. And then of course you need to add the energy and leadership that she brings to the Bulldogs. Volleyball is a game of energy, and momentum. The Dogs feed off of Mara’s energy in times when things aren’t rolling on all cylinders.

Mara has a career hitting percentage of .273, which is very efficient. She doesn’t get a ton of attempts but she clearly makes the most of her opportunities to attack out of the back row. Mara does her best work on defense, eclipsing 200 digs in her career. She is also a very reliable server, with only 17 service errors in her career.

Mara sat down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her volleyball career. They discuss her senior season, what makes the Lakeview program special, and much more. Get more insight into Lakeview volleyball with the latest player profile “Crish Cross”.

LAKEVIEW ESCAPES INDIANS UPSET BID

CORTLAND OH- It was not looking good for Lakeview on Thursday night as they fell behind 2-0 to a powerful Girard team. They could see their long NE8 win streak, and their undefeated season slipping away. The Bulldogs barked back and rallied to win 3 sets in a row to dodge a bullet and beat Girard in five (16-25 20-25 25-17 25-16 25-13).

Tara Lytle led a balanced Bulldog offense with 12 kills. She also managed to grab 3 aces, and 3 blocks. Brooke Schnider wasn’t far off with 21. Maggie Pavlansky set up 34 assists.

Lakeview will take a deep breath and travel to Struthers on Tuesday. Girard will need to look ahead, as they have a tough non conference match Monday hosting Western Reserve.
