WESTERN RESERVE MAKES CLUTCH PLAYS TO GRAB VICTORY

BERLIN CENTER OH- The MVAC never shies away from putting on a show. Tuesday night was no exception as Western Reserve welcomed in Mineral Ridge for a big conference bout.  Western Reserve would jump out to a big lead early, leading by as much as 10 in the first half. Mineral Ridge however would quickly make a game out of it, and would never go away after that. Fast forward to the final second of the game, with a one point lead 58-57 Western Reserve drew up a great inbound play to get Joe Serensky loose in the back court. He made a layup, got fouled and completed the three point play to seal a 61-57 win.

Srensky led the Blue Devils with an impressive 19 points. Luke Henning was also in double figures for Reserve finishing with 16 points.  Luke Ramsey was able to chip in an important 11.

Mineral Ridge was paced by Jon Rozzi who finished with 18 points.  Tristan Valley also got himself in double figures with 11 points. Trey Rigley contributed 9 points for the Rams.

Western Reserve hits the road on Friday for a non conference matchup with Leetonia.  Mineral Ridge will be off until after Christmas as they return to the court Tuesday December 27 against Niles.

TIGERS DON’T GIVE IN TO MINERAL RIDGE

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Mineral Ridge was off to a high flying start to the season.  After gaining their first conference win earlier in the week, the Rams were excited to measure their merit against a league favorite in Springfield. The Tigers never gave in to the upset bid of the Rams and ran away with a 43-23 win.

Madi Lesnak was in double figures for the Tigers and led the way with 13 points.  Jacey Mullen worked hard to chip in 8 points.  Olivia Booth and Lily Merolillo both led the Rams with 5 points each.  Gianna Gilbert scored 4 points.

Springfield  takes a step away from conference play on Monday as they host Columbiana.  Mineral Ridge stays in MVAC play as they travel to Western Reserve.

STRONG FINISH PROPELS MINERAL RIDGE TO VICTORY

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Mineral Ridge came in to Monday night already with as many wins on the season as they’d had a year ago.  But there are much larger goals in mind for the Rams.  They were hungry to make waves in the MVAC, and McDonald was the first team standing in their way. In a game that was back and forth almost the entire night, Ridge found themselves down 39-38 with the clock winding down. However, the Rams slammed their foot on the gas and ended the game on a 11-0 run to win 49-39.

Ava Hulett led the way for Mineral Ridge with 15 points, including a dagger three in the fourth to put the Rams up by two possessions.  Freshman Gianna Gilbert put in a great effort as well scoring 14 for Ridge.  Olivia Booth played well despite some early foul trouble and finished with 9 points.

McDonald was paced by Juliana Krumpak who finished with a game-high 17 points.  Gracie Callow earned a hard fought 9 points for the Blue Devils. Adding to their offense was Alyvia Morrison with 7 points.

Mineral Ridge has a big test ahead as they will take on Springfield on the road on Thursday.  McDonald will try to bounce back on Thursday as they return home to host Waterloo.

WARRIORS RUN THE SHOW IN MINERAL RIDGE

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Brookfield coming into the game looked for a three and 0 start to their season and their first winning season since 2014-2015.  Meanwhile, Mineral Ridge came into the game 0 and three and needed a win to keep the momentum alive.  Both teams kept the game close for three and a half quarters, but in the fourth, it was all Brookfield in the end winning by the final of 71 to 59.

For the Warriors, it was Matteo Fortuna leading the pack with 25 points and helping him was two dynamic duos of Donovan Pawlowski, the trumbull county player of the year in football who scored 20, and Isaiah Jones with 15 points, two of those dunks and three blocks in the first quarter.  Nevon Hoffman played a role scoring five points, and Carter Creed had a corner three.  On the Rams side of the ball, it was Trey Rigley, averaging 9 points per game, dropping 23.  He was followed by Ian Erb with 10 points, Nate Rohrman with 11 points, eight for Jordan Moore, five for Elias Clarke and two for Nate Colburn.

ORANGE HANDS RAMS THEIR FIRST LOSS

MINERAL RIDGE OH- The two teams playing in Mineral Ridge on Saturday were coming off of dramatically different directions. While the Rams were off to their best start in a while, Orange struggled the night before against Edgewood 52-20. Playing 2 games in less than 24 hours is never east, but this young Lions team shook off the damage from the night before and handed the Rams their first loss of the season 56-47.

The Lions were led by Rachel Oberster who finished the day with a game-high 20 points. NiKayla Henderson was also in double figures for Orange with 10 points.  Kynnade Bates put in 9 points for the Lions, while Olivia Jackson scored 8.

The Rams were once again led by Ava Hullet who scored 15 points.  Isabella Carkido had a fantastic 4th quarter on her way to 14 points. Olivia Booth was also in double figures finishing with 10.

Orange is now back above .500 with a 3-2 record. They will return home on Tuesday as they take on Hawken.  The Rams will try to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Monday as they will host LaBrae.

NEWTON FALLS SETS THE TONE

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Newton Falls came in to Tuesday night’s game at Mineral Ridge riding high off their first win of the season.  They used that momentum to shoot out of a cannon and score the first 14 points of the game. After that, they didn’t feel any pressure the rest of the way to a 75-45 victory.

Alex Pennington hit the first five shots he took on his way to a game high 19 points to lead the Tigers.  Mac Haidet chipped in 17 points to the Tigers offense, while Dom Greathouse was the third Tiger in double figures with 14.   The Rams were lead by Ian Erb who scored 11 for the Rams, and chipped in 6 boards.  Trey Rigley contributed 7 points to the Rams cause.

Newton Falls is now 2-0 on the season and will look ahead to a game against Heartland Christian at home on Friday.  Mineral Ridge will have their first road game of the year on Friday traveling to LaBrae.

RIDGE LOOKS TO BUILD ON OPENING DAY WIN

EAST PALESTINE OH- Last season Mineral Ridge sent out a young roster that found only 2 victories in a tough MVAC schedule. With a roster that is one year older, the Rams started with a bang on Monday as they traveled to East Palestine and got the win 43-37.  The Rams are 1-0 for the first time since 2017.

Ava Hulett led the Rams with an impressive 18 points.  She also went up to get 5 rebounds.  Olivia Booth finished with a double double gathering 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Gianna Gilbert payed great defense taking away 5 steals, she also finished with 7 points.

Mineral Ridge will hope to make it 2-0 on Wednesday as they travel to Sebring.  East Palestine gets right back to action on Tuesday as they travel to Lordstown.

CLIPPERS NOT PHASED ON THE ROAD

MINERAL RIDGE OH- New head coach Eric Harper and the Mineral Ridge Rams looked to bounce back after a disappointing 2021-22 season as they hosted the Columbiana Clippers friday at the Rams gymnasium or as the student section had it as “The Mob”.

The Rams took the first half and seemed to have control leading 26-23.  However, the defense of the Clippers stepped up in the second half, being led by Devin Daugherty, the junior who last season averaged 7.7 points per game and threw up 30 points to start the season.  Daughertu would be helped in the second half by Maddox Brown (12 points) and Ian Less (11 points) as they kept the momentum rolling.  Ridge would only score 14 total points in the second half with Jordan Moore, Trey Rigley, Julian Rozzi and a three by Elias Clarke.  Unfortunately for the Rams, they ran out of time, sent the Clippers in the double bonus and gave Columbiana and seventh year coach Todd Johnson the week one victory 62-40.

After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien spoke with coach Johnson on what changed after the first half and what to expect for the next coming weeks against Beaver Local and Lisbon.  Mineral Ridge meanwhile will look to bounce back against Newton Falls on Tuesday.
