QUAKERS EDGE BEAVER LOCAL

SALEM OH- The Quakers girls tennis team won a close match with Beaver Local
3-2 on Thursday night. The Wuakers dropped both doubles matched, but were able to dominate the singles, only dropping 1 game in 3 matches.

RHODES COMMITS TO VIRGINIA TECH

SALEM OH- After a whirlwind of a freshman season, incoming Salem class of 2024 Carson Rhodes has committed to Virginia Tech to continue his athletic and academic career. He says the Hokies were the program that believed in him from the beginning and their faith made this an easy decision. Carson can now complete his career at Salem without a care in the world concerning his recruitment. He may need to change his walk up song to “Enter Sandman” by Metalica to get ready for life in Blacksburg.

Carson finished the 2020 season with 36.0 IP, and striking out 41 hitters. His final ERA was 4.66, His record on the bump was 5-2. He knows the work doesn’t stop just because he made the commitment. Carson is ready to put his work ethic into overdrive to get his team as far as possible. When asked what his goals were now in high school he simply replied with “Win a state championship.” It would certainly be a feather in the young man’s cap.

SALEM SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MIKE BAILEY

SALEM OH- You can imagine how much time is sacrificed to head coach a high school athletics team. Now imagine you’re coaching two. That is a task that Salem soccer coach Mike Bailey has not shied away from. He is now the head coach of both the boys and girls programs. Salem has a unique set up where him, and two other coaches handle both teams together. The chemistry and dynamic between the three men is a big reason why it works. The Salem girls open the season this year on August 13th as part of the OHSAA’s “Friday night Futball” initiative. They will travel to United. The boys will travel to United as well opening the season on August 21st.

Mike was able to stop by in studio to visit YSN’s Running Point. He gave us an inside look at how this tri coach set up is going to work with Salem’s soccer teams. He chatted with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the programs culture, what got him started in soccer, and much more. It’s the start of something new in Salem and we couldn’t be more proud to shine a light on them, check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Mike Bailey.

QUAKERS GET ONE LAST TUNE UP BEFORE TOURNAMENTS

The final regular season game at Ray Reasbeck field featured a lot of offense from both teams and another Quaker victory to put a cap on the 2021 campaign with an 11-8 win over Columbiana Monday.

The Quakers once again got off to a hot start Monday night as they put up 4 runs in the first inning to grab control of the game. A pair of run scoring singles by juniors Corey Riesen and Hunter Carlisle with a run scored on a passed ball sandwiched in between gave the Quakers the start they needed.

After a 1-2-3 first inning junior pitcher Cayden Burt got roughed up in the second inning giving up 6 runs on 5 hits, a walk and an error in the field. But Burt bounced back after the rocky second inning not allowing another Columbiana hit and if it wasn’t for Sophomore Gavin Wilms needing some work in the final two innings, probably would have finished the game for the Quakers with another strong performance.

Speaking of Wilms, the big sophomore gave the lead back to Salem in the second after fellow sophomore Donnie Oesch led things off with a double and scored on a bases loaded walk, Wilms hit a mammoth 3 run blast into the student section in left to make it an 8-6 game.

Salem would add 3 more runs in the 3rd make it 11-6 and that’s the way the ballgame would end with Wilms on the mound to shut down the regular season with the team’s 23rd victory of the year. The Quakers finished the regular season 23-3 and will host Louisville in the sectional finals on Wednesday at Ray Reasbeck Field at 5 pm.

SALEM COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF EBC

Salem put a bow on their regular season today at Canton South with a 6-4 win over the Wildcats to make it a perfect 12-0 in the EBC this year.The Quakers were forced to play 4 league games in the season’s final week to capture their first conference crown in 3 decades and their deep pitching staff once again stepped up and got the job done.

Freshman Carson Rhodes, just like he did Monday, got the ball against the Wildcats and went 5 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts before Canton South got to him in the 6th for 4 runs.

Junior Cayden Burt had Rhode’s back however as he came in and got the last 2 outs of the sixth including a failed suicide squeeze attempt on his first batter. Burt finished off the game in the 7th to give the Quakers the win.

Blaize Exline started everything off for the Quakers with a swinging bunt in the first inning. He stole second on the first pitch to give him twenty stolen bases on the year without being caught. Junior Darius Beck scored Exline on the next pitch with a line drive to left field. Exline would have another hit, stolen base and run scored in the third inning.

Seniors Lane Rhodes and Nick Coletta also collected two hits on the day for the Quakers including an RBI double by Coletta.

The Quakers improved to 22-3 on the year and a perfect 12-0 in the EBC. Salem will be back in action Monday at the Ray against Columbiana before hosting the winner of the Louisville and Struthers game on Wednesday on the Secrional Final.

QUAKERS STAY IN THE RIGHT LANE

Lane Rhodes was brilliant on the pitcher’s mound on Wednesday, as Rhodes threw a no-hitter to lead Salem past West Branch 4-0.

Salem got things moving in the first inning. Gavin Wilms doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring three runs.

Rhodes was the winning pitcher for the Quakers. The righthander allowed zero hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out seven.

David Cunningham took the loss for West Branch. The bulldog allowed four hits and four runs over six innings, striking out seven.

Rhodes, Darius Beck, Carson Rhodes, and Wilms each managed one hit to lead Salem.

SALEM SECURES TRIP TO SECTIONAL FINAL

Back in 2019 young freshman Rylie Troy got the nickname “Soldi”, for the clutch catches she made in left field saving some key ball games. Soldi means “money” in Italian and Ry Ry was absolutely “money” on the evening. She struck out 15 batters including 13 in the first 5 innings with the only other two outs in that stretch being bunt attempts. Now I’d like to give a pat on the back of the pitcher caller but the same pitch was called on each of the 112 pitches Miss Troy threw on the evening, at different locations. She was absolutely dominating her locations with movement. The bigger the stage – the bigger the performance from Soldi. In striking out the last two batters in the game for the 6-3 win in the sectional round, it marked the 6 straight season played (no season last year) that Salem has advanced past the first round and played in the sectional finals.

Cleanup hitter Chase Toy doubled to the right-center gap for a clutch 2 out RBI in the third inning stretching the Quakes lead to 2-0. Jenna Bear McClish talked prior to the game about how much the seniors mean and playing the game for them. Well, Senior Hannah Kelm set the tone on the second pitch of the game roping a line drive single to left. With the score tightened to 4-3 after six innings, leadoff hitter Kelm began the top of the 7th inning with another single. Kelm and McClish each would score insurance runs with one of them on Senior Dorothy Moore’s clutch RBI single. That’s how these seniors roll.

Rylie Troy had two hits. Jenna McClish and Lauryn Barton had a hit a piece. Freshman Sami Gainor laid down a nice sac bunt and fellow freshman friend Laila Murray scored a run. Troy swiped two more bases giving her 22 on the season. Kelm 2 stolen bases, McClish stole one and freshman Avery Carr stole a base as well as scoring a run. Savannah Schaff also scored a run.

In the 6th inning rally for Streetsboro the “Deuces Wild” outfield of #22 Skinner, #12 McClish and #2 Barton came through. Kylie Skinner made a nice catch on a deep shot to left and Freshman Lo-Dawg Barton stayed with a towering fly to right with the sun blinding her at every squint. Love those visors. It gets lost sometimes when you’re doing your job but Freshman catcher Bella Brant did exceptional behind the dish especially with the movement on pitches. A total team victory with a loud dugout throughout the game.

Salem is at Canfield this Thursday for the sectional final game.

QUAKERS CLAIM EBC TITLE

Salem won big over West Branch 8-2 on Tuesday.The win gives Salem the EBC championship.

In the first inning, Salem got their offense started. Jackson Johnson drove in one when he singled.

Gavin Wilms led the Quakers to victory on the hill. Wilms lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out seven.

Dru DeShields took the loss for West Branch. DeShields went four innings, allowing eight runs on six hits and striking out six.

Salem  had eight hits in the game. Lane Rhodes and Wilms each collected multiple hits. Wilms and Rhodes all had two hits to lead.

ALL RHODES LEAD TO VICTORY FOR SALEM

Carson Rhodes had all the right stuff on Monday for Salem, allowing zero runs and besting Canton South by a score of 6-0

Salem pulled off the big victory without ever scoring many runs in an inning. The most they scored was two in the third.

The Quakers opened up scoring in the first inning. Gavin Wilms homered on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

One bright spot for Canton South was a single in the seventh inning.

Rhodes was the winning pitcher for Salem. The righty allowed one hit and zero runs over seven innings, striking out seven.

Salem smacked two home runs on the day. Wilms had a homer in the first inning. Rhodes put one out in the fourth inning.

Wilms led Salem with two hits in three at bats.

QUAKERS CLEAN UP CARROLLTON

Salem Quakers snagged a late lead and defeated Carrollton 6-2 on Wednesday. Salem trailed 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Nick Coletta doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

Carrollton opened up scoring in the second inning, when Jaxson Rinkes singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

The Quakers put up three runs in the sixth inning. Darius Beck and Jackson Johnson each drove in runs during the inning.

Gavin Wilms was the winning pitcher for Salem. The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out nine.

Lawson Irwin took the loss for Carrollton. Irwin allowed five hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out two.

Salem racked up eight hits in the game. Beck and Lane Rhodes each had multiple hits. Rhodes and Beck each collected two hits to lead.

Rinkes went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Carrollton in hits.
