QUAKERS DROP HOME OPENER TO MINERVA

SALEM OH-

A large well scattered crowd (including alumni players-thanks) attended Salem’s 2021 home softball debut. Thanks to a great job by our maintenance crew the field was in great shape and so was the weather.

Rylie Troy pitched well in the loss striking out 8 and allowing just 2 earned runs. The defensive highlight of the game was a diving catch down the right field line by freshmen Lauryn Barton. Hannah Kelm was involved in 5 defensive chances with 0 errors. Jenna McClish made a nice catch on a screaming line drive to center.

Rylie Troy and Dorothy Moore each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Quakers offense. Chase Toy, Madalynn Workman and Bella Brant each singled. Leadoff hitter Hannah Kelm scored in the third straight game.

PETRO POURS ON FIRE AS CANFIELD BLANKS QUAKERS

CANFIELD, OH- Cardinal hurler, Ryan Petro aptly set the Salem lineup ablaze from the mound on Saturday afternoon.  Petro cruised on his way to a one-hitter against one of the area’s stronger teams in a 10-0 route, but it wasn’t as one-sided as it reads.

Salem senior ace, Lane Rhodes, showed why there’s so much interest in him at the next level as he went 3 strong innings giving up just one hit, and striking out five Cardinal batters.  Carson Rhodes pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief surrendering 8 runs on 4 hits.  Blaize Exline was the only registrant in the hit column for the Quakers.

For Canfield, Petro controlled the offense and defense with his pair of hits and 2 RBI’s, while on the bump striking out six, and walking two in a complete-game effort.  Landon Beidelchies put a quarter in the merry-go-round in the fourth with a 3-run double.  Gianni Gaetano and Dom Magliocco would each have 2-RBI days, with AJ Havrilla adding one as well.

The Cardinals will turn their attention now to Akron Hoban on Monday on the road to take on one of the top teams in the state.  Salem will host Minerva on Tuesday to open up EBC play. The game is set for 7 pm.

After a very nice ceremony to celebrate the opening of a beautiful new softball field at Warren Harding, their AD said “play ball”. Those words never sounded so good after missing the 2020 season. That would ignite a 4 run inning. Senior Dorothy Moore went 3 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Freshmen Lauryn Barton added three hits and Junior Jenna McClish added 2 RBI. Sam Moore, Hannah Kelm, Rylie Troy and Chase Toy all had hits. Salem was aggressive on the bases stealing 7 bases and allowing 0. Leading the thieving was Hannah Kelm with 2 SB.

GAME 2:

For the second straight game the Quakers began their hitting barrage in the 3rd inning. Leadoff hitter Hannah Kelm started a string of 4 straight hits to began the 3rd inning which ended with Salem up 6-0. Hannah had 4 hits in the game. Every spot in the lineup had at least one hit. Rylie Troy raised her record to 2-0 in the circle striking out 3 while walking just 1 in 6 innings of work. Savannah Schaff once again pitched a scoreless inning.
