QUAKERS REBOUND BEHIND WILSON’S COMPLETE GAME

SALEM, OH-  Just a day after suffering a 7-1 defeat to Canton South, the Salem Quaker Baseball Team fired back.  Quaker Skipper, Mike DeBarr gave the baseball to his trusted Senior Southpaw, Adam Wilson.

Wilson never gave the ball back.

While both teams were strong on the mound Wednesday, the Salem Quakers defeated Canton South 3-2.  Wilson allowed just five hits to Canton South.  The Quakers  got on the board in the second inning when Nick Coletta grounded out, scoring one run.  They pulled away for good with one run in the third inning when Lane Rhodes singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Wilson was credited with the victory and allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out nine.  Stauffer was on the mound for Canton South. He lasted five innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out three and walking zero. Frey threw one inning in relief.

Rhodes went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Salem in hits. The Quakers were stout in the field as well and didn’t commit a single error. Bryce Owen had ten chances in the field, the most on the team.

Canton South racked up five hits on the day. Throckmorton and Frey each collected multiple hits for Canton South.

LADY QUAKERS FALL SHORT AGAINST LIBERTY

STRUTHERS, OH- The Salem Lady Quakers season came to an end Wednesday night as they fell to Liberty 50-43.

It was apparent early that Liberty’s length and athleticism were going to be a problem for the Quakers offense. The Leopards played mostly zone and that fed right into the hands of their strength. The Quakers suffered 7 turnovers in the 1st Qtr and were 0/10 from beyond the arc. The Quakers would trail 13-8 after a quarter.

The Quakers slowly settled down on offense only giving up 5 turnovers in the 2nd quarter. Still, Liberty’s ability to run in transition and score easy buckets was giving Salem’s defense trouble. Even after Quaker made shots Liberty would consistently beat them down the floor. At the half, Salem was sticking around down 22-18.

In the second half, the Quakers offense fixed the turnover problem. Only surrendering 4 of them in the final two frames. This made Salem consistently get close to the Leopards. However, Liberty was able to punch back every time Salem got close. This game went from a 2 point game to an 8 point game more than once in the second half.  Liberty just hit too many clutch shots for Salem to make a game-winning run. Liberty would win 50-43.

Ellie Davidson and Kyla Jamison both had 12 points for the Quakers to lead. Davidson notched a double-double adding 10 rebounds. Jamison had 9.

SALEM BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER W/ VINCE NITTOLI (EP 3)

We’re headed to the heart of the postseason.  Coach Nittoli and his staff have the girls ready to compete for some hardware this year and have already started their quest with a win under their belt.

Now as they meet the competition in neutral territory away from the home cooking at “The Cab” what cards will be dealt for the Lady Quakers?

We pick the brain of the Head Ball Coach on this week’s Salem Basketball Coach’s Corner with Vince Nittoli (Ep 3.)

ELL’ ON WHEELS

Salem Senior, Ellie Davidson has been known to have a fiery side on the basketball court.  With her aggressiveness that has been passed down from her siblings (she is one of 9) Ellie has learned not to take too much grief from anybody, no matter what size they are.

Davidson serves as the team’s anchor when it comes to leadership and course-bearing.  During the West Branch game, Davidson just grew frustrated with losing to the Lady Warriors throughout her career, and at halftime during their final matchup, she drew the line in the sand.  “We’re not losing this game.” Davidson proclaimed.  Her teammates followed, and for the first time in nearly a decade, Salem defeated their arch-rivals.

The aggressiveness that Ellie shows isn’t about to just go away.  Ellie looks to utilize her love for contact with a degree from Kent State with a path toward criminal justice and hopes to someday work with a federal agency of some type.

STONE COLD KYLA

Have you ever met someone who is such a nice, caring person that you think they could do no harm to anyone?  If so, you’ve probably met Salem Sophomore Student, Kyla Jamison.

Have you ever met somebody who is so ferocious and physical on the court that you think they would do whatever it takes to win?  If so…you’ve probably met Salem Sophomore Hooper, Kyla Jamison.

It’s just ironic those people can coexist into one human.  Jamison has been vital for Salem this year, leading in multiple categories on the stat sheet, but understanding and respecting that her upperclassmen have great assets and abilities to lead this team.  Kyla’s been overjoyed being a part of this year’s team.  Learning from the likes of Ellie Davidson and the others, it’s been a great position for Kyla to grow into.

You’ll see her signature pony-tail violently whip to the floor for tie-ups.  She even was the recipient of a black-eye this year from a practice, (Yes, we’re talking about practice.)  The legend of Jamison continues to grow, but she knows the magical season she and her Lady Quakers are on is a matter of controlling her own destiny.

This week, in anticipation for a great week of girls games, and inching closer to the tournament…we give you our Salem Player Profile: STONE COLD KYLA.

SALEM BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH VINCE NITTOLI (EP 2)

In the Salem High School Weightroom, there’s a countdown on the whiteboard that reads “_________ days until we beat the team in green.”  For the Salem Lady Quakers, it had been over 3,000 days since the last time it happened on the basketball court.   Three thousand, two hundred and sixty-nine days later, on their home floor, Salem prevailed.  Not only to break the streak but to set themselves up atop the EBC standings and in solid position for the first ever Eastern Buckeye Conference crown.

We had a chance to catch up with Coach Nittoli after the game and discuss the chess match that was/is West Branch vs. Salem.  As well as the players that allowed the streak to be broken after nearly 10 years.

All that and more on Episode 2 of Salem Basketball Coach’s Corner with Vince Nittoli.

SO MUCH TO HOFFER

There’s a switch that every competitor has that allows them to take themselves to “another level.”  For Crestview Junior, Tanner Hoffer, that switch has been flipped.

Hoffer played numerous sports leading up to high school that included volleyball and track along with basketball.  When she was a freshman, she was taken under the wing of a senior who changed her outlook on her social life, as well as what it took to become a leader.  Hoffer since has dropped other sports to focus on what she feels will propel her into college, and continue to play a game that she loves.  A game that when you talk about her teammates, a wide smile crosses the face of the Rebel Forward.

Quite simply, a new and focused Tanner Hoffer is an incredible asset to the Rebels and is bad news for her opponents.

We sat down with Tanner prior to the Labrae game for this week’s Crestview Rebel Player Profile: SO MUCH TO HOFFER.
