CRESTVIEW PULLS OFF INCREDIBLE COMEBACK

COLUMBIANA OH- The game on Friday night in Crestview certainly did not start the way that the Rebels would have liked. They saw Springfield break out to a 26-10 lead after one quarter of play. The Rebels could not get a hold of Seandelle Gardner.  He scored 16 points for the Tigers in that frame alone.  However, the rest of the game would go differently. The Rebels outscored the Tigers 42-22 the rest of the way to win 52-48.

James Best led the Rebels with an inspired performance on both sides. He tallied 16 points, and also played lock down defense on Gardner for the last three quarters.  Wyatt Miller led the offense with a dominating performance down low scoring 18 points.  Kirkland Miller added 7 points to the cause.

Springfield was paced by Gardner who finished with 24.  Sean Guerriero chipped in 9 points for the Tigers.

Both teams hit the road on Tuesday to continue their season.  Crestview is 3-1 and travel to Heartland Christian while Springfield will look to start conference play at Sebring.

A MILESTONE MOMENT TO START THE YEAR

LOWELLVILLE OH- The start of a new season is always exciting. However in Lowellville the adrenaline was pushed to the max as Vinny Ballone went for 1,000 career points. The future Rocket hall of famed needed 14 points coming in to the night to seal the deal. He doubled that goal finishing with 28 in the Rockets 67-45 win over Crestview.

At halftime, Ballone went to the locker room with 13 points knowing his next bucket would be a special one. He didn’t have to wait too long as his next shot came to start the third quarter.  Ballone is now the 14th Rocket in the basketball program (boys and girls) to eclipse 1,000 points.

Lowellville is off until next week when they travel to Southeast. Crestview is back in action on Friday at Jackson Milton.

RHODES AND REBELS MAKE THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN

Featuring a pair of teams that took a trip to regionals last year, and a ton of talent spread out, debate has sparked on who will make the top spot. REBELS RUN ENDS IN REGIONALS

BARBERTON OH- Crestview knew how hard the task was I front of them on Thursday night in Barberton. This region has never been easy to get out of, and that didn’t change. It has been a good bet in the past that the winner of the Barberton regional would punch their ticket to a state championship game, and if not win it get pretty close.  This year the region featured two teams coming off a season where they went to the state championship game. Crestview’s opponent Mentor Lake Catholic we’re the state runner ups last season in Division II, and Independence found their way back to Barberton after losing in 5 sets in last year’s Division III state title. Crestview had to contend with Lake Catholic, and the number one ranked team in the state proved why they are in that spot. They swept the Rebels out of regionals to end their season. (25-14 25-16 25-14)

Abbey Emch still was able to get her swings. She finished the night with a team high 13 kills, and she also gathered 5 blocks. Grace Auer ended the year with yet another double double finishing with 10 assists, and 22 digs.  She also had 3 of the Rebels 5 aces.  Lainy Auer led the team in assists with 12.

It was Lake Catholic’s balance on offense that was too much for Crestview to handle. They could come at them from anywhere on the court, and that showed in their numbers.  Natalya Bergant led the way for the Cougars with a game-high 14 kills. Two more of her teammates joined her in double figures as Katie Sowko had 11, and Claire Duricky finished with 10.

Crestview ends their season with a 24-3 record and held their fourth consecutive district championship. The most conservative district trophies won by any sport at the school.

DOWNEY IS HEADING UP

COLUMBIANA OH- Defense is so important in volleyball, and sometimes so overlooked. If the ball isn’t passed in a good spot it will throw off the whole rhythm of the offense. Setters and hitters owe everything to their back row defenders.  The leader of the back row is the libero. Crestview is one of the best teams in the area, and that stems from having a high level libero in Emily Downey.

If there was any doubt about how good Downey is on the floor, it should have been forgotten in this district tournament. With matchups against state ranked opponents in both the district semifinal, and final Downey showed up huge.  Whether it be digs, or even more importantly serve receive, Downey showed off her talents to help the Rebels win their fourth straight district title.

Looking at Downey’s numbers she has accumulated 211 digs on the season.  She averages just under 3 digs per set.  She has only made 15 digging errors all season.  Emily leads the team in serve receives with 270, and has only made 27 receiving errors.  She had 24 digs in the two district tournament games against state ranked opponents.

Downey was kind enough to take the time to talk about her junior season with Anthony Hartwig.  They talk about what it’s like being trusted enough to be a libero, what has grown her confidence so much, and so much more. Check out the latest Crestview Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

HART OF GOLD

COLUMBIANA OH- It might sound crazy to a casual fan, but truly great volleyball teams are not defined by the players that get them the kills.  The best volleyball teams find their pulse with their defense. Everything starts with a first touch. Crestview volleyball has played some of the best back row defense we’ve seen this season in the YSN family.  The spark plug of that group is senior captain Meredith Hart.  Meredith is such a positive source of energy for the Rebels. In the rare cases where some things go wrong, there’s a good bet you’ll see number 3 smiling, clapping her hands, and making sure her team stays in the moment.

This strong sense of leadership was something Hart grew in to. The fact that her own teammates voted her captain in the preseason gave her all the company in the world.  Being voted a captain just has a little more kick to it than when a coach picks it. Meredith knew coach Auer believed in her, but the votes were also tangible evidence that all of her teammates believe she is the girl for the job. She takes the role very seriously. The Rebels are going to need all of her energy in the regional bracket they find themselves in. The further you go, the better the teams are, and the more likely it is that you’re going to give up a small run or two. Hart’s positivity will keep the Rebels even in those moments.

Meredith was able to take time out of her school day to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. They talk about what it means to be a captain, how much she has grown in her time at Crestview, and much more.
