THE NATURAL IS BACK IN FULL FORCE

COLUMBUS, OH- Everyone wants their moment in life, for some, it’s a story that’s well written with no antagonists, little drama, and bright shiny skies each day of the way.

For others, it’s a story full of obstacles, trials and tribulations, and adversity around each corner- but we watch and hope and pray for success to come the way of “the underdog.”  This is the way of South Range alum, Jacob Gehring.  A young man that was able to capture the hearts of the local baseball fans in 2018 after helping lead his team to a state championship, and maintained humility the entire way.

In the 1on1 interview, Jake talks about what he’s learned along the way, and what he’s still looking to accomplish.  The Natural also talks about all the people that have given him the opportunity in one fashion or another to launch to where he’s worked to get to today.

Sit back, and enjoy this version of 1on1 because THE NATURAL IS BACK IN FULL FORCE.

STRONG FOUNDATION LEADS TO STRONGER FUTURE AT SOUTH RANGE

CANFIELD, OH- In its just over 50-year existence- South Range High School has always been home to talent.  It’s been a labor of love by multiple communities to create the stigma that Raiders appreciate today walking through the halls.

Seemingly forever ago, South Range realized that if they focus on the youth programs, and build from the ground up, the messaging will be much easier to download once they reach middle, and high school athletics.

Mission accomplished.

South Range Athletic Director, Don Feren joined DJ Yokley on Power Hour to discuss the importance of early exposure of athletics that is in line with the rest of the programs, as well as the benefits of travel for programs like softball and baseball to help challenge student-athletes and build character.

YSN MADDENBOWL: HUBBARD VS. SOUTH RANGE

EAST PALESTINE, OH- On a snowy night in February, the weather shut down all athletic events and put YSN at a standstill.

That was until we decided to pair up athletes in our area to compete against each other in Madden ’22 and talk about their journeys, their teams, coaches, and maybe a little trash along the way.

Hubbard’s Nick Bowser picked up the sticks against South Range’s JD Crouse for a little 1v1 with a moderator along the way.

YSN’s DJ Yokley reffed the battle of the NE8 rivals, as they took to the gridiron with a random draw, and then battled Pittsburgh vs. Cleveland for bragging rights.

POLAND CLINCHES FOURTH STRAIGHT NE8 TITLE

POLAND OH- At the beginning of the season the talk in the girls basketball scene was how wide open the NE8 was. Everyone expected a new team to throw their hats into the championship ring. Every year since the NE8 has formed, it has been Poland and South Range as 1, and 2. Fast forward to the first week of February, and it was once again down to South Range vs Poland. On Wednesday night it was winner take all with both teams coming in with 1 loss in the league. After a slow start Poland ran away from South Range this time around to win 49-29.

Connie Cougras led the charge for Poland with 14 points on the night. Her and her fellow seniors have now completed a 28-0 home league game record. Katie McDonald was also in double figures with 11. Morgan Kluchar added 8 to the cause.

South Range showed up and fought the entire night. Short handed in numbers, the Raiders were led by both Emma Cunningham, and Hannah Heikkinen with 7 points each. Devin Sauerwein chipped in 6.

Poland will have a week of tournament tune ups to look ahead to. The Bulldogs have their last home game of the regular season Monday hosting Howland. South Range still has a couple league games to finish. They are scheduled to play host to Jefferson on Monday.

SENIOR NIGHT BRINGS SUCCESS FOR SOUTH RANGE

CANFIELD OH- Every year programs have to say goodbye to seniors that are about to graduate. It always makes senior nights an emotional experience. For the Raiders class of 2022, it has been a roller coaster of a high school career. From missing the district championship their freshman season, to going to back to back regional finals the last two years, to now fighting and clawing to keep the winning culture in the program. They deserved their recognition on Monday night, and the Raiders honored them with a big win against a streaking Struthers team 45-33.

The Raiders jumped out in front early and never looked back. The third quarter was the big difference, the Raiders watched their 9 point lead balloon to as much as 19. It made even the Wildcats best punch not enough to mount a comeback.

Lexi Giles led the Raiders with 17 points on her senior night. Emma Cunningham was big adding 16 points to the Raiders cause. All three seniors got into the stat sheet on the night they were honored. Giles, Hannah Heikkinen, and Mallory Vidman all showed up big in the win.

Chloe Neider led Struthers with 12 points. The Wildcats struggled from behind the arc. They went the entire game without a three.

South Range kept their spot at the top of the NE8. They’re currently tied with Poland, who they’ll meet up with Wednesday at Poland. Struthers will return to action Thursday as they travel to Girard.

RANGE FINDS BALANCE TO AVOID BULLDOGS UPSET

CANFIELD OH- In what coach Fishel called the most balanced offense his team had this season, the Raiders escaped a furious effort from Lakeview Thursday night with a 35-33 win. A 7-0 fourth quarter Lakeview run made things interesting, but the Raiders made enough plays. The Raiders found eight players in their stat sheet.

Leading the right scorers for the Raiders was Emma Cunningham who finished in double figures with 11. Lexi Giles was able to contribute a well earned 8 points. Mallory Vidman added 6, while collecting 7 boards.

Maggue Pavlansky scored a game-high 14 points for Lakeview. Gianna Caruso contributed 9 points, and 7 rebounds.

The win sets up a huge opportunity for South Range. Monday they will travel to Poland. Both teams have 1 loss in the league, so the top spot is on the line. Lakeview will host Struthers, who knocked off Poland Thursday night.

CANFIELD SWIPES THE VICTORY ON A MILESTONE NIGHT

CANFIELD OH- A game that was originally scheduled to be both team’s final match of the regular season, close neighbors South Range and Canfield came together to do battle Wednesday night. Raiders senior Lexi Giles came in to the night needing just 3 points to get 1000 in her career. The Cardinals made it harder as ever, as Giles had to wait until the 4th quarter to get her milestone point on the foul line. Canfield would run away with the win however, as their defense dominated the entire night.

Alyssa Dill led the Cardinals offense with 15 points on the night. She set the tone early scoring the first five points for the Cardinals. Gianna DeLucia was also in double figures with 10 points. Abby Muckleroy would stack up 8.

Lexi joins Izzy Lamparty, and Morgan Czopur in being the third Raider in the current decade to get to 1,000 points. In that ten year span, the Raiders have won 6 district championships.

Canfield will look to carry their momentum back into league play as they host Fitch on Saturday. South Range returns to their league slate on Thursday hosting Lakeview.
