SOUTH RANGE, GARFIELD, CRESTVIEW, EDISON FILL LIST OF DIVISION V ALL-OHIOANS

COLUMBUS, OH- With South Range and Garfield going undefeated all regular season, and well into the post-season, you knew these two teams would fill up the accolade count when the award season came around.

They did not disappoint.

The Raiders were led by Dylan Dominguez’s first-team selection, who became the first South Range running back in history to have 3 consecutive 1000 yard seasons for the Burgundy and Gold. He was joined on the first team by record-breaking Junior Signal-Caller, Billy Skripac as well as Michael Lally and Logan Cormell.

Second teamers for South Range include Jacob Brooks on the offensive line and linebacker, Tyler Remish.  Bailey Ryan would head the third team, and the tandem of Connor Jones, Ayden Leon and Shane Lindstrom were named honorable mention.

Garfield landed their star running back, Anthony Demma on the first team, with Riley LaPorte garnering the same honor on the offensive line.  Brody Swigonski wrapped his senior year with a third-team all-state selection as well.  Austin Roman hauled in an honorable mention on the offensive line, while sophomore Keegan Sell made the team as a linebacker, and Colin Lysiak did the same on special teams.

Crestview had a couple of standouts make the list, as Anthony Cusick etched his name at honorable mention QB, and his teammate Roclen Bettura joined him at linebacker.

Edison’s Jacob Cusick was selected to the second team, and sophomore, and Chase McClurg joins the team as an honorable mention linebacker with Hunter Russell landing on the offensive line.

We congratulate these young men on representing their families, communities, school and program at the highest level this season!

RAIDERS EARLY BURST PUTS THEM PAST MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- South Range saw glimpses of everything that coach Fishel wants them to be on Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Mooney. The Raiders blew the doors off in the first half, scoring 36 points in two quarters. Five different Raiders scored in the first half as well, showing just how strong the team will be when theyre balanced. They would go on to hold off Mooney in the second half to win 51-37.

Lexi Giles led the way for the Raiders with 18 points. Grace McQuiston, and Hannah Heikkinen both chipped in with 9 points. Emma Cunningham scored 6 points to help the Raiders cause. Eight different Raiders showed up on the stat sheet.

Mooney was paced by Maria Fire Sho finished the game with 13 points. Alaina Scavina, and Olivia Rouser both finished with 8 points.

South Range will look to extend their win streak to three on Monday as they travel to Jefferson.  Mooney will look to bounce back on Wednesday on the road against Warren Harding.

LOUISVILLE WRECKS RAIDERS SHIP

CANFIELD OH- It was the home opener for South Range on Friday night. The Louisville Leopards came in with bad intentions for the Raiders party. They wrecked the home opener with 61-39 domination of the Raiders.

The Leopards were led by Will Aljancic who finished with an impressive 24 points. Hayden Nigro also added a strong 22 points.

South Range was led by Landon Moore, and Dylan Turvey who both finished with 8 points.

Louisville will stay on the road Tuesday to take on Alliance.

RAIDERS FIND THEIR WAY TO THE WIN COLUMN

CANFIELD OH- It was definitely a tough start to the season for South Range. They dropped their first two  games to Hoban, and Salem without scratching 30 points on the scoreboard. They came in to Thursday night’s NE8 opener hearing the rumblings that maybe they weren’t going to be contenders anymore. They heard it, and they silenced it. The Raiders came away with a big momentum swinging victory over Girard 45-36.

Emma Cunningham found a rhythm on offense, which will be key for the Raiders continued success. She led the team with 15 points. Lexi Giles, and Grace McQuiston both were in double figures with 10 points.

Girard was led by Mia Malito who finished with 10 points. Senior Seyhan Dede put in a strong 7 points to contribute as well.

The Raiders will try to continue their success on Saturday as they travel to Mooney. Girard Will also be back in action Saturday as they host Beaver Local.

DEFENSE TELLS THE STORY AS SALEM CRUISES PAST RAIDERS

CANFIELD OH- South Range and Salem seem to clash every year in girls basketball, and it has become on of the areas best rivalries on the hardwood. Salem remembered all too well the way South Range came in to their gym last year, and walked out winners. On Monday night it was the Quakers who returned the favor. They handed South Range a 37-21 loss.

The Lady Quaker had a nice defensive effort from Abby Perry holding Lexi Giles to only 11 points while Krista Barley and Rylee Hutton contributed 3 and 2 steals apiece respectively. Abby Perry and Rylee Hutton also chipped in 10 points and 9 points respectively. The Lady Quakers also had six other girls contributing offensively to the team’s final total of 37. The Lady Quakers were also led by Kaylee Carlisle on the boards

 

Giles was the leading scorer for South Range with 11. Their defense cause plenty of havoc as well, holding the Quakers to under 40 for the first time all season.

The Quakers will host Minerva on Saturday, while the Raiders will stay at home against Girard on Thursday.

RAIDERS STUNG BY KIRTLAND IN REGIONAL FINAL

NILES, OH- The last time South Range Football suffered a loss was against Kirtland in 2020, and unfortunately for the Raiders, it turns out that the Hornets have once again proved to be the Kryptonite to the Super season South Range has forged together in 2021.

The battle was underway early as South Range started with the football, but on the second play from scrimmage Billy Skripac’s pass was intercepted by Will Sayle and taken back to the house to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.

The Raiders didn’t blink in the face of adversity, as Skripac would lead a drive to counter-punch the Kirtland strike that ended with a toss to Connor Jones from 16 yards out to put South Range on the board and knot the game at 7-7.

When Kirtland’s offense finally took the field with just over seven minutes to go in the first, they showed up as advertised.  Mason Rus capped off a scoring drive with a 3-yard run with just 19 ticks left in the first quarter.  The Hornets followed that up with a Tommy Gogolin 64-yard scamper, and another Mason Rus score to put Kirtland ahead 28-7.

Kirtland showed excellence on special teams as well as Johnny Raguz would blast a 31-yard field goal to make it a 31-7 advantage.

South Range refused to lie down, though.  Billy Skripac made a house call from 37 yards away, and Dylan Dominguez would follow it up converting a 2-point try- leaving the Raiders 2 scores away with 4:38 on the clock.

The Raiders would attempt an onside kick that did not go the necessary ten yards, and Kirtland would take over in South Range territory.

The final blow from Kirtland came from 16 yards out on a touchdown pass from Ramon Lescano to Gage Sullivan to finalize things at 38-15.

Kirtland’s offense outpowered the Raiders 375 yards to 234 with both teams doing the majority of damage on the ground.  The Hornets ran for 308 yards and were led by Mason Rus’ 110 yards on 28 attempts.  Tommy Gogolin had 92 yards on 5 carries to supplement the running attack.

South Range was led by Billy Skripac’s 63 yards rushing, and 75 yards through the air with a score.  Dylan Dominguez had nine totes for 63 yards.  Shane Lindstrom and Connor Jones led South Range receivers with 25 yards apiece.  JD Crouse had a catch for 16 yards as well.

Defensively, Dylan Dominguez was a wrecking ball with 12.5 tackles on the night.  Bailey Ryan had 6.5 stops, along with Tyler Remish.  Logan Cormell disrupted Kirtland throughout the night to the tune of 6 takedowns, while Corey Penick and Connor Jones had 4.5, respectively.

South Range ends the season as the last Northeast 8 team standing and with a 13-1 showing on the campaign, and have lost 2 games in as many seasons which should not be overlooked or taken for granted.

Kirtland remains undefeated at 14-0 and has not lost in 54 consecutive games, which is the longest active streak in the country.

Best of luck to the Hornets in their quest for another state championship in 2021.

SOUTH RANGE BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH WILL KLUCENIC

CANFIELD OH- For the last eight years, South Range boys basketball has been led by the legendary John Cullen. They found plenty of success under his leadership, but he has decided to step away. But don’t worry Raider Nation! There aren’t too many bigger names in area basketball coaching than the newest head of the Raiders Will Klucenic. He was on staff under coach Cullen, so even though it is his first year, Coach Klucenic knows exactly what tools he has for this season.

Coach took the time to drop in to YSN’s Running Point this week to help us preview his teams upcoming season. He talks with Ty Bartell, and Anthony Hartwig about his returning leaders, the Raider culture, and much more. Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Will Klucenic is live.

SOUTH RANGE GETS TRICKY IN VICTORY

LOUISVILLE, OH- It took a deep dive into the South Range Playbook, but the Raiders executed some trickery late in the contest to beat Garaway 15-12 to keep their season alive!

The game started with South Range coming out in an up-tempo offense and driving the length of the field to punch the ball in with Dylan Dominguez from 2-yards out, and taking a lead that had many ready for what we’d seen all season long.

This was a new twist on a movie so many Raider fans have seen before.

Garaway did not shy away from the physicality of the game on Saturday night, though.  In the second quarter, the Pirates offense fired back with a 31-yard touchdown from Logan Yoder to JD Young, but the extra point was no good- leaving the game at 7-6.

The Pirates would have another opportunity right before the half to take the lead but the field goal attempt going into the wind was no-good, leaving us in a one-point game.

Adjustments were made on both sides of the ball, but it took until 4:30 left in the third quarter for either team to break out.  Garaway’s Ethan Miller broke out of the “Stacked I” formation from 31-yards out to give Garaway their first lead of the night at 12-7.

Then, after the misdirection the Raiders had shown for the last 3 weeks, the chess game was about to pay-off.  While driving in the fourth quarter, South Range was at the 17 yard-line looking for answers on third down when Offensive Coordinator, Wayne Allegretto dug into the bag of tricks and orchestrated a beautiful double-reverse pass from Shane Lindstrom to Ayden Leon to give the Raiders the lead at 13-12.

The Raiders weren’t done there.  With visible special teams issues for Garaway, and complete faith in the Raider defense, Coach Yeagley rolled the dice and went for two after the score.  Billy Skripac would put the team on his shoulders and shimmy into the endzone to give the Burgundy and Gold an 3-point advantage to make it 15-12, to eventually win the game.

Leading the way on the ground for South Range was Dylan Dominguez, who had 18 carries for 61 yards and a score.  Skripac added 37 yards on 7 carries while going 6/9 for 82 yards through the air, while Lindstrom’s only pass was pulled in by Leon from 17 yards out, while hauling in 4 receptions for 77 yards.

Defensively, Tyler Remish had 9.5 tackles and led the way on stops while Logan Cormell had six stops.  JD Crouse, and Jacob Brooks closed down the Pirates with 4 tackles apiece.

The Raiders punch their ticket to the Regional Championship game, and force a rematch against Kirtland next week at Bo Rein Stadium in Niles at 7PM.

 

SOUTH RANGE COACH’S CORNER (EP 6) WITH DAN YEAGLEY

CANFIELD, OH- The Raiders are still chasing history as they move into Week 12 without as much as a blemish on their record.  With Crestwood coming to town, and South Range prepared to host their final game of the season at Raider Stadium, Head Ball Coach- Dan Yeagley discusses the opportunities and what makes South Range “different” and “special” in 2021.

Coach Yeagley also dives into how the focus is changing from the high-octane offense, to the stingy defense that the Raiders possess.

SOUTH RANGE DESTROYS DEVILS

CANFIELD, OH- Take every comparison you’ve seen or heard about this year’s South Range Football Team, and throw it aside.

All because we’re just now beginning to understand that we have yet to scratch the surface on the talent this Raider team is capable of showcasing.  Especially after flexing their muscles in a 49-6 performance in Week 12 over Crestwood Saturday Night.

Thrive, and advance.

The Raiders started the party just over three minutes in when Connor Jones dashed into the endzone from 2 yards out to give the Raiders the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

From there, it was Dylan Dominguez finding paydirt twice- the first carry from 25 yards out, and the second punched in from 3 yards away.  Dominguez would finish with 139 yards on 14 carries, and add in an impressive one-handed reception for 27 yards out of the backfield.  Other rushing leaders for the Raiders consisted of Landon Moore with 41 yards, Billy Skripac with 34 yards, Jake Starkey’s 26, Connor Jones’ 25, and Ethan Zinz’s 20 yards.

The Raiders as a team finished with 517 yards of total offense, including 314 of them coming on the ground.

Skripac continued to be the most efficient quarterback in the area’s recent memory- completing 9 of 11 passes for 185 yards and 2 scores.  Tristan Toy provided Raider fans a glimpse of the future with a beautiful touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Brady Crumbacher from 18 yards out in the left corner of the endzone.

Leading the receiving corps for South Range on the night was Shane Lindstrom, who continued to dazzle those in attendance each time he touched the football.  South Range’s best-kept secret, Ayden Leon went 3/3 on targets converting them for 56 yards and a touchdown.  Connor Jones hauled in a 45-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter continuing to showcase his versatility in the up-tempo Raider offense.

The lone highlight for Crestwood came in the fourth quarter when Ethan Strahan picked off an errant pass from Tristan Toy and returned it to the house, and ending the scoreless streak for South Range’s defense over the last 3 weeks.

With the victory, South Range will line up to play Garaway next Saturday night at 7pm at a location yet to be determined at the time of writing.  YSN will again be streaming the game as part of their Power Play Package at $9.99.
