HUBBARD LEAVES RAIDERS SHIPWRECKED

HUBBARD, Ohio

Five different players drove in runs for the Hubbard Eagles to back the pitching of Mikey Zapka to lead the Dirty Birds to a 7-2 non-conference victory over the Warren Harding Raiders.

Dylan Durkos delivered the biggest blow in a six-run fifth inning with a ground ball single through the 6-5 gap that would plate two runs. SophomoreBen Wilcox would finish the explosive fifth with a single to bring across Hubbard’s final run of the inning.

Offense wasn’t always so easy for the Eagles in this one as the Dirty Birds didn’t record their first hit until their huge fifth. The Harding pitcher, Elijah Taylor, was grooving into the inning, striking out six through his first four innings of work.

The right-handed junior Zapka, who struck out six and didn’t allow a single walk in the ballgame, threw his third complete game of the season and improved his record to 3-0. But after he allowed a solo home run to his pitching counterpart, Elijah Taylor, in the fourth, his back appeared to be against the wall but don’t tell Mikey that. “I knew I just had to stay confident and shake it off,” Zapkasaid. “I’m not the type of guy who lets a homerun get to him.”

Zapka would allow another run in the fifth before putting the clamps on the Raiders, only giving up two hits while striking out two in his last two innings of work.

IRISH SHOW GRIT IN WIN OVER HARDING

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  People usually know the term GRIT for Youngstown State, but there’s another team that’s been having GRIT on their side lately and that’s none other than the Ursuline Irish boys basketball team who were looking to get extend their winning streak to five, but it was going to be tough as they faced off against the Warren Harding Raiders, who were still searching for that first win of the season and were overcoming some adversity with a few of their players.

The first quarter was all Ursuline leading 15-4 and already by this time, you had parents and fans at home watching as if this was going to be a blowout.  Well, that did not happen as the Raiders caught up big time trailing only by two at the half and then five at the end of the third quarter.  However, some costly turnovers and late fouls on Warren’s side, gave Ursuline a bigger lead which led them to scoring inside the paint in the fourth winning 60-46 and improving to 6-4, while Warren Harding fell to 0-4 on their short season campaign.

Ursuline Stats

Up Next:

Ursuline (6-4) will have to schedule an opponent as the Holy War, one of the best rivalries in NorthEast Ohio has been Postponed due to COVID-19.  Warren Harding (0-4) will host Howland (3-1) Friday at 7pm if there are no outbreaks.
