RED DEVILS LOCK DOWN REVENGE ON LABRAE

CAMPBELL OH- In the final two weeks of the high school season, many volleyball teams are wrapping up
their conference play and a good amount are facing common opponents for the second time. Looking at the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Grey Division, there has been plenty of parity amongst the teams below The Crestview Rebels. These teams include The LaBrae Vikings and The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils who met for their second match of the season on Thursday night. With both teams taking the full five sets to determine a winner in their first meeting at Leavittsburg, The Vikings emerged victorious in comeback fashion 3-2. Two great coaching staffs on both sides with Coach Kish leading LaBrae and Coach Allen with The Red Devils, setting up all the right ingredients for another fun match!
Wasting little time, both teams duked it out in a momentum-swinging war to start set one.

Both teams held the lead and struggled to hold it once having it. Campbell would get enough key plays down the stretch to sneak away with the 25-23 opening set win. The Vikings understood the assignment in set two, realizing that falling behind two sets on the road to The Red Devils was not going to be favorable. LaBrae ensured a set win by grabbing the initial lead off an early rally and riding that advantage all the way to a 25-17 set two win. With both teams even at a set, Campbell came out hungry in set three. Doing all the little things right, The Red Devils recaptured a set lead with a convincing 25-14 victory in set three. With The Vikings backs against the wall, Memorial had a chance to take the match in set four. Despite showing great resiliency and battle throughout the match, LaBrae could not force a set five, falling to The Red Devils 25-18, giving Campbell their revenge and a season split!

Kendall Brunn led Campbell in both kids with 19 and blocks with 4 in the match. Angelina Diaz had the double-double performance with 10 kills and 11 digs. MiLeena Williams also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Elysia Rudolphi made great work with her time on the court, notching 5 kills in the win. The most impressive stat lines of the night came in a pair of program record breakers! Cyra Cross had a defensive performance for the ages, breaking the single match record in digs with 36! 2K, Carla Ramirez-Ortiz added her name to another assists record in Campbell history, as the all-time assists queen is the single match assists queen, recording an outstanding 49 in the win!

Following the win, Campbell-Memorial (15-5)(9-4) will look ahead to non-conference action when the entertain The Badger Braves (14-6) on Monday, October 9th. Also on Monday, LaBrae (15-5)(9-4) will get back to action when they stay on the road to face The Warren G. Harding Raiders (3-13). RAMS EARN A SHARE ON SENIOR NIGHT

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a fitting celebration on their senior night, Mineral Ridge’s volleyball team demonstrated their dominance on the court, securing a share of the MVAC title with a resounding straight-set victory over Springfield. The scores spoke volumes: 25-14, 25-13, and 25-6.

Mineral Ridge showcased exceptional teamwork and standout individual performances throughout the match. Samantha Aulet orchestrated the offense masterfully, contributing 22 assists and making her presence felt with 5 aces. The versatile Faith Schneider was a force on both offense and defense, recording 12 kills, 9 digs, and 4 aces. Ava Hulett delivered a memorable double-double performance, amassing 13 digs and 10 kills, while also adding 6 aces to her impressive stat line. Sheryaliz Bonilla’s contributions in defense were crucial, with 12 digs to her name, and Anastasia Busse contributed with 6 kills and 4 aces, adding to Mineral Ridge’s offensive firepower.

This victory cemented Mineral Ridge’s remarkable conference season with a record of 13-1, securing a share of the MVAC title alongside Western Reserve. The rivalry between these two talented teams resulted in a split of their regular-season matchups, setting the stage for a thrilling postseason and ensuring that Mineral Ridge’s senior night would be a memorable one, filled with triumph and the taste of championship glory.

RESERVE ENDS THE WEEK IN DOMINATING FASHION

BERLIN CENTER OH- In a dominant display of volleyball prowess, Western Reserve secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Sebring, sweeping the sets with scores of 25-9, 25-12, and 25-6.

Western Reserve’s exceptional teamwork and standout performances were evident throughout the match. Haylee Fellows orchestrated the offense effectively, tallying an impressive 14 assists to set up her teammates for success. Alyvia Hughes was a force to be reckoned with at the net, delivering a remarkable performance with 11 kills. Hughes also displayed her prowess from the service line, recording 5 aces while contributing 5 digs to the defensive effort. Lisa Eichert made her presence felt with 7 kills, 5 digs, and 2 aces, showcasing her versatility on both offense and defense. Quincy Miller’s performance was equally noteworthy, as she provided 14 assists, 2 aces, and 5 digs, further solidifying Western Reserve’s control of the match.

WELLSVILLE DASHES THE CLIPPERS HOPES OF AN UNDEFEATED SEASON

WELLSVILLE OH- In a dramatic volleyball showdown that sent shockwaves through the league, Wellsville emerged as the giant slayers, putting an end to Columbiana’s previously unbeaten season. The home crowd witnessed a thrilling five-set battle that tested the limits of both teams. The scores told the story: 25-17, 16-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-6 in favor of Wellsville.

Wellsville’s Presley Stokes led the charge with an outstanding 20 kills, demonstrating her prowess at the net. She also contributed three aces and two blocks, showcasing her well-rounded skills. Bella Poppelriter provided valuable support with 12 kills, adding depth to Wellsville’s offensive arsenal. The team’s setter, Mackenzie Nixon, orchestrated the offense effectively with 35 assists and chipped in with six aces and two kills, underlining her importance to the team’s success.

On the opposing side, Columbiana displayed resilience and fought fiercely despite the loss. Ellie Jackson’s performance was a standout, as she notched 15 assists, 13 digs, and five kills, achieving an impressive double-double. Cameron Perkins also contributed significantly with seven kills, 13 assists, and 13 digs, showcasing her versatility and determination. Ava Heinrich, with 20 digs, played a crucial role in the team’s defensive efforts.

RAIDERS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF A FIVE SET MARATHON

STRUTHERS OH- In a volleyball showdown filled with suspense and determination, South Range triumphed in a thrilling five-set match against Struthers, bringing an end to their losing streak. The Raiders displayed resilience and fortitude as they fought for every point, ultimately emerging victorious with a final score of 25-10, 26-28, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9.

South Range’s victory was a testament to their unwavering spirit and never-say-die attitude. After a challenging stretch, they showed up with a renewed determination to secure the win.

Sarah Kuhns the Raiders’ setter and floor leader, Kuhns, was instrumental in the victory, tallying 18 assists and displaying excellent court awareness. Her 18 digs showcased her dedication to both offense and defense. Kuhns also contributed with a valuable ace.

Anna Toy an offensive force for South Range, Toy’s 10 kills were crucial in securing points for her team. Her remarkable defensive effort was evident in her 25 digs, demonstrating her willingness to battle on every front. Two aces further highlighted her well-rounded game.

Madie Mook’s eight kills added to South Range’s offensive firepower, while her six digs showcased her defensive prowess. Her three aces provided a much-needed spark during key moments in the match.

Olivia Meli A formidable presence at the net, Meli contributed with six blocks, disrupting Struthers’ offensive efforts. Her six kills further solidified her impact on both offense and defense.

 

HOBAN SHOWS RESILIENCE TO STAY UNDEFEATED

ALLIANCE OH-  On a Thursday night showdown between two of the top volleyball teams in the region, The Archbishop Hoban Knights had, yet another, big test on the season in order to keep their undefeated year alive! Rattling off 17 consecutive wins to start the season, Hoban entered Thursday with the perfect 17-0 record and were coming off a win against previously 15-1 Hiland. Their opponent was no slouch in their own right, as The Knights hit the road towards Marlington to battle The Dukes. Marlington, in the midst of another successful season, entered their matchup with Hoban sporting a very good 18-2 record! All the pieces were there for intense battle and did these two teams ever deliver!

The first set saw The Dukes blast The Knights out of the gates, hitting Hoban with everything they got and beating them to the spots almost every time in the opening set. Swing errors did not help The Knights as Marlington rode their opening set lead to an emphatic 25-12 win, putting a ton of pressure on Hoban to claw back on the road. The Knights did just that, finding a nice response in the second set by battling themselves away from The Dukes with some key rallies. Hoban would take an important set two, knotting the match up 1-1 in sets.

Being on the road is never easy and Hoban Head Coach Jim Maloof knows that, but “The consecutive road matches at the end of the season are intentional, what are you playing deep in the tournament? On the road.” Maloof said. It did not get any easier when marlington re-took the set lead with a 25-19 set three victory, giving The Dukes at handing Hoban their first loss this season. This would be only the second time this entire season where The Knights would trail in a match 2-1. Fighting tooth and nail in set four, Hoban knew it was now or never to get it done and they got it done. A sweaty palm type battle ensued in set four and lasted all the way till the very end.

The Knights would squeak out a 25-23 set four win to set up an ever important set five for the match! After a bit of back-and-forth, Hoban went pedal to the metal in the deciding set and never looked back. Racing their way to the 15-8 set win and clinching the match on the road over The Dukes 3-2!

Amber Watson was grabbing scores anyway that she could, leading the team in both kills with 14 and aces with 5. Macie Mintz recorded 22 digs to lead her team defensively. Sophia Day had the quarter-piece on assist in the match with 25 in the win. While Bailey Prince remained a force at the fence, charting 3 blocks for The Knights on the night. Hoban (18-0) will look to keep their undefeated season alive when they stay on the road to do battle with The Chardon Hilltoppers (6-11) on Monday, October 9th. BULLDOGS COME BACK FROM THE BRINK TO GO BACK TO BACK

CORTLAND OH- In a nail-biting volleyball showdown, Lakeview secured back-to-back NE8 titles with an astonishing comeback against Girard. Down 2-0 in sets and facing adversity at every turn, the Bulldogs displayed incredible determination and resilience to emerge victorious in five thrilling sets, 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-12, 15-12. This remarkable victory was punctuated by a dramatic comeback from a 12-6 deficit in the decisive fifth set.

Lakeview showcased their championship mettle throughout this match, refusing to let adversity define their performance. Their tenacity was evident on every point, and it ultimately paid off in the most dramatic fashion.

Leading the charge for Lakeview was junior outside hitter Molly Stuart, who delivered a stellar performance with 22 kills and 15 digs, recording a double-double in style. Stuart’s unwavering determination and powerful hits were pivotal in sparking the Bulldogs’ comeback.

Not to be outdone, Reagan Price, another offensive force for Lakeview, contributed 22 kills of her own. These dynamic attackers kept the Girard defense on its toes throughout the match.

The Bulldogs’ exceptional playmaking was orchestrated by setter Mallory Mailach, who provided an impressive 51 assists while also contributing four aces. Her skillful distribution of the ball helped Lakeview regain control of the match.

Defensively, Addy Allen was a standout, showcasing her prowess with 22 crucial digs that kept countless rallies alive.

Girard, led by the powerful Bree Latell with 24 kills, put up a spirited fight, demonstrating their own championship-caliber play. Bailey Walters, the team’s setter, displayed incredible versatility with 50 assists, 17 digs, and three aces, recording a double-double performance. Nico Cochran contributed with 10 kills, and Alexis Pieton was a force at the net with six blocks. Kyra Bell’s 17 digs showcased Girard’s commitment to defense.

Lakeview’s victory secures their position at the top of the NE8 conference with a perfect 12-0 record. This remarkable achievement, winning back-to-back NE8 titles, underscores the Bulldogs’ dominance in the conference and their determination to excel at the highest level of high school volleyball.

HAVING A BLAST WITH BLASKO

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In volleyball, the setter’s role is often considered one of the most pivotal on the court. For Cardinal Mooney’s young but incredibly talented sophomore setter, Natalie Blasko, this season has been all about embracing leadership, making every set count, and cherishing moments shared with her older sister, Angelee.

Natalie’s emergence as the varsity setter in her first year is a testament to her natural leadership skills. On the court, she exudes confidence and composure beyond her years, guiding her team with an instinctual understanding of the game.

Playing alongside her senior sister, Angelee, has been a cherished experience for Natalie. The sibling bond they share is evident not only in their personal connection but also in their synergy on the volleyball court. It’s a unique opportunity that both sisters have embraced.

Crucial to Natalie’s confidence is the trust and belief placed in her by head coach Toni Chahine. This trust has empowered Natalie to take the reins as a setter and guide her team effectively.

Statistically, Natalie has been a force to be reckoned with this season. With an impressive 459 assists and an average of 7.2 assists per set, she has shown remarkable playmaking abilities. Furthermore, her skills extend beyond the net, with 144 digs to her name. Natalie’s performance suggests that she’s well on her way to achieving the milestone of 500 assists, setting the stage for an extraordinary career that could potentially see her reach 1,000 assists before her senior season even begins.

With a talented setter like Natalie Blasko anchoring the team for two more seasons, Cardinal Mooney’s future on the volleyball court looks bright. As they continue to grow and evolve, Natalie’s leadership and playmaking abilities promise to guide them toward even greater success in the seasons to come.

FITCH WIN STREAK GETS BITTEN BY THE LEOPARDS

LOUISVILLE OH- After clinching the AAC title with an impressive win over Canfield the previous night, the Fitch volleyball team faced another challenging contest, this time on the road against the formidable Louisville Leopards. Despite their best efforts, Fitch experienced a tough four-set loss, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination throughout the match.

The first set kicked off the action, and both teams displayed their prowess. Louisville managed to secure the set with a score of 25-20, but Fitch quickly regrouped for the upcoming battle.

In the second set, Fitch showed their resilience and determination, clinching a convincing 25-17 victory. This balanced the score, making it clear that the match was going to be a fierce contest.

However, Louisville regained their momentum in the third set, delivering a strong performance that resulted in a 25-16 win, putting them ahead once more.

The fourth set proved to be the most intense of them all, with both teams giving their absolute best on the court. Despite their valiant efforts, Fitch fell just short, as Louisville managed to secure the set and the match with a final score of 25-23.

Throughout the match, standout performances defined Fitch’s efforts. Kylie Folkwein led the offensive charge with 14 kills and also contributed significantly on defense with 20 digs, earning herself a double-double.

Afton Roby showcased her versatility with 13 kills and 3 blocks, while Rylie Simons orchestrated the offense with 42 assists, demonstrating her playmaking ability. Simons also played a pivotal role at the net with 4 aces and 4 blocks.

In the back row, Izzy DiRenzo displayed exceptional defensive skills, accumulating 22 digs and ensuring that Fitch remained competitive throughout the match.

Although Fitch faced a tough loss, their performance against a strong Louisville team highlighted their competitive spirit and determination. With the AAC title secured and an undefeated league season still within reach, Fitch will continue to strive for excellence as they look ahead to future challenges, including their upcoming match against Howland.

RED DEVILS RAMP UP THE HEAT

CAMPBELL OH- It is amazing what high school kids can accomplish in the world of sports when given the
right kind of care, love and attention. Championships can be won, programs could be established and relationships will be built that last a lifetime. Looking at The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils volleyball team, they are rapidly becoming one of those comeback stories. In the midst of one of their best volleyball seasons ever, The Red Devils have won a program best 8 conference matches this season and were 13-5 overall heading into Wednesday night. The always competitive, Maggie Martin led Heartland-Christian Lions came to town with plenty of height to their credit. Setting up a fun non-conference Wednesday showdown on the network!

Both The Red Devils and The Lions exchanged early scores as no real leader emerged early on. Stopping at just about every score in the opening set through the first nine points. In the middle portion of the set, Campbell went on key rally and separated themselves from Heartland-Christian, securing the 25-16 set win for The Red Devils. Continuing the momentum in the second set, Campbell continued to find success both defensively at the net and behind the service line. The Red Devils won more convincingly in set two 25-12. By set three, Campbell had firm hold of the momentum up 2-0 in sets at home. The Devils got even better as the match rolled along, winning set three by the largest margin at 25-10 to complete the straight set sweep of The Lions.

Ms. 2000, Carla Ramirez-Ortiz continued to be one of the best setters in the area, racking up 28 assists and 8 digs in the match. Kendall Brunn dominated at the net once again with 3 blocks while leading the team with 12 kills! Campbell put in a team effort defensively, as both Angeliz Diaz and Cyra Cross led the team with 9 digs a piece and Gabriella Villanueva-Santos recorded 7 digs herself. Cyra Cross also got it done behind the service line with 4 aces. Elysia Rudolphi made noise with her time on the court, notching 5 kills in the match. One of the Players of the Match, MiLeena Williams was impressive all over the box score, with 10 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks on the night!

Campbell (14-5)(8-4) will now set up a fun home conference matchup with LaBrae (15-4)(9-3) on Thursday, October 5th. Both teams went to five sets in their prior meeting with The Vikings getting the edge 3-2. Heartland-Christian (7-12) will play back at home on Saturday, October 7th against The Bristol Panthers (5-13). The Lions won a prior meeting with The Panthers this season 3-1.
