EAGLES EMERGE ON TOP OF STRUTHERS

HUBBARD, Ohio –

Dormant through the first 3 innings, the HubbardEagle (10-12) bats finally came alive in the bottom of the 4th of their matchup against the Struthers Wildcats (4-9). Trailing by a run, Jake Hettrick reached first via an error to leadoff the inning. After back-to-back outs and then a throwing error by the catcher, Hettrick was in scoring position with senior Tristan Adamson heading to the dish.

Looking for their first hit of the evening, Adamson would line one deep enough to bring around Hettrick and knot things up at 1 apiece.A one two three trip to the dish by the Wildcats in the top half of the 5th brought the Eagles back to the plate before their bats got to cool off.

After a fly out to start the inning, senior Andrew Frank would sky one high in the air towards the first baseman. Turning his back to the ball, the first baseman lost sight of and allowed the ball to drop. Frank, being the heads-up ball player he is, rounded first and headed straight for second for a standup double on a ball that never left the infield.

Following the mistake that allowed Frank to reach second, Albert Gerlick would crush the first pitch he saw deep into the right-center gap. Frank would easily come across to score and Gerlick would reach third safely for a standup triple. With their first lead of the game in hand, senior Evan Jarvis would then step up to the plate for the Dirty Birds and hit one well to deep center field for a sacrifice fly, giving the Eagles a 2-run lead.

Kobe Krisuk, a senior leader for the Dirty Birds, got the start today for Hubbard. Krisuk struck out seven batters through his 6.2 innings of work. The towering righty allowed three walks and just five hits on the day. The only run that came across to score was unearned.

One out away from a complete game, Krisuk would give Struthers’ leadoff batter the free pass to put a runner on with two away. The Wildcat’s Alex Grzyb would then single to right field and put runners on the corners. Head Coach John Schiraldi would then make a move to the bullpen, leaving Krisuk one out shy of a complete game.

Needing to retire just one batter before the man on first could come around to score, Mikey Zapka took the mound for a rare relief appearance. The junior needed just one pitch in his outing, forcing Drew Day to fly out to secure the save as well as the victory for the Eagles, 3-1.
