MOONEY NEEDED IT ALL TO GET PAST EAGLES

HUBBARD OH- Cardinal Mooney visited Hubbard on the links Monday in what turned into a match between two skilled golf programs. The Cardinals took the win by a slim 2 stroke margin 157-159 over the Eagles at Pine Lakes Golf Course.

Medalist honors went to the Cardinals Rocco Turner with an impressive round of 34. Teammate Dante Turner contributed a solid round himself carding a 38. Mooney also received contributions to the victory from Alex Eckstein 41 and Tyler Guerrieri 42.

Hubbard was led by Garrett Brojkovich’s round of 40. Geno Leshnack and Colten Smith each turned in a 42 on the day for the Eagles.

Each squad is back on the inks Tuesday as Cardinal Mooney visits Austintown Fitch, while Hubbard hosts Lakeview.

MOONEY WINS THRILLER OVER LAKE CATHOLIC

MENTOR, OH- Lake Catholic and Cardinal Mooney, both steeped in tradition, met for their season opener, displaying great promise in their clash. Despite their efforts, the Lake Catholic Cougars, led by junior quarterback Frankie Trinetti, narrowly fell short with a score of 29-26 against the Cardinals at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.

A pivotal moment came in the fourth quarter as Mooney seized the lead after capitalizing on a fumble recovery. In the dying seconds, the Cardinals converted a crucial fourth down and seven to secure their hard-earned victory.

The opening half showcased Trinetti’s skills and the offensive weapons at Lake Catholic’s disposal. Trinetti’s impressive performance saw him complete 14 out of 22 pass attempts, accumulating 239 yards and securing four touchdowns.

After Mooney surged ahead with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Cougars and Trinetti rallied admirably. Responding to Mooney’s initial touchdown drive, Ashton O’Brien led the Cardinals 80 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with a 5-yard keeper touchdown. A successful PAT gave Mooney a 7-0 lead.

Despite a minor setback—a Trinetti interception returned for a 45-yard touchdown by Mooney’s Rocco Gentile—the Cougars displayed resilience. Trinetti orchestrated a gritty 72-yard, nine-play drive, connecting with junior tight end Cross Nimmo for a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Cougars on the scoreboard. However, the PAT attempt fell short.

The Cougars continued to battle, knotting the score at 14-14 midway through the second quarter with a methodical 83-yard drive culminating in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Trinetti to Nimmo, followed by a successful 2-point conversion.

The seesaw nature of the game persisted as Mooney responded with an eight-play, 72-yard drive. A 36-yard touchdown pass from O’Brien to Carlos Gomez, along with a successful PAT, put the Cardinals back in front, 21-14.

The final moments of the first half were action-packed for the Cougars, as Trinetti orchestrated two touchdowns in quick succession. The first came from a 77-yard touchdown pass to DJ Sears, pulling them within one point. Subsequently, with just 10 seconds left, Trinetti found Nimmo for a 53-yard touchdown pass, allowing the Cougars to enter halftime leading 26-20, despite missed PAT attempts.

Both defenses tightened up in the scoreless third quarter, setting the stage for a decisive fourth. Mooney took advantage of a Lake Catholic fumble, resulting in a 29-yard touchdown pass from O’Brien to Tyon Flowers, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, propelling Mooney to a 29-26 lead.

In the waning moments of the game, Mooney’s defense secured a pivotal interception, but Lake Catholic countered with a clutch interception by Ace Peterlin. However, Mooney’s defense held strong, preventing a late-game comeback and sealing their 29-26 triumph.

CARDINAL MOONEY VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TONI CHAHINE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- We have heard quite a bit from Toni Chahine over the last calendar year.  Not only is she returning for another year coaching Mooney’s volleyball team, but we also caught up with her during lacrosse season. Every conversation the same message comes across clearly. Mooney will compete like crazy under coach Chahine.  Mooney Volleyball this season will be no different. With a ton of seasoned talent on their roster mixed in with some impressive height, Mooney will be a tough team to knock out of the gym.  They also carry with them a monster schedule full of upper division teams that will prepare them more than most for their postseason.

Coach Chahine took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to preview the upcoming season. They talk about the leadership on the roster, what the “Mooney way” means to her, and so much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Toni Chahine only on YSN!

RINALDI REMEMBERS RINEHART’S LEGACY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- A lot has changed since the year 1990.  Madonna was a top selling artist, CGI was a Hollywood fantasy, and social media wasn’t even conceived yet. One thing that stayed the same from 1990-2023 was Mark Rinehart being the head coach of the Mooney softball program. Over 3 decades have past since Rinehart took the job, and those years have been filled with almost nothing but wins. 31 of the 33 seasons that Rinehart has held the reigns at Mooney have ended with a winning record.  After the 2023 season concluded, Rinehart decided to hang up the manager’s hat and stroll off into retirement. The footprints that he left on the program will never go away though.

16 of Rinehart’s players have gone on to play at the next level. One of the most decorated players to come through Mooney is Conchetta Rinaldi. The current YSU Penguin is set to finish up her career with one last season in Youngstown.  She has accomplished so much in her career, and a lot of her success would not have come without the guidance of Coach Rinehart during her time at Mooney.  Rinaldi was kind enough to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about the legacy her former coach will leave on the Mooney program. They also talk about what the next coach should expect if they want to keep the tradition alive, some of her favorite memories with the Mooney program, and so much more. Check out this exclusive interview with a legend of Mooney’s past Conchetta Rinaldi.

RAY ALWAYS SAVES THE DAY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- If you’re talking about a sport the deals with a goal, you can’t do much without a goalie.  The idea that one of your players is pretty much the last line of defense between your goal and a ball, or puck hurling your way can terrify some people right out of playing the position. That’s why every coach we talk to on YSN tells us that goalies have a special mindset. It’s not for everyone.  With that being said, it must ne impossible to step on the field and just pick up a goalie jersey and be an immediate impact tight? Wrong. For Cardinal’s Mooney’s net blocker Alyssa Ray she has gone from knowing nothing about lacrosse to 300 career saves in just 2 seasons.  The Cardinals main stay in front of the goal never hesitated when head coach Toni Chahine challenged her to fill a role for her team.  Now, just two seasons in the junior has sights set on a remarkable 500 saves in a career. Sitting at over 300 now, and still with one season to play that goal seems more and more probable by the day.

Ray was kind enough to check in with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her journey to a lacrosse goalie.  They discuss how much she’s been able to learn about the sport, what drove her to try it in the first place, and so much more. Check out the latest Mooney Lacrosse Player Profile only on YSN.

ITS JUST A BOYD THING

YOUNGSTOWN OH- When we see seniors come through a program, we see the culmination of four years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears.  All of that going towards one goal which is to be the best version of themselves.  It’s what makes so many people proud on senior nights to watch the four year career of these athletes end in success. For Cardinal Mooney’s Logan Boyd, his Mooney career couldn’t have gone better. It has grown him into one of the best leaders this area has to offer. His work ethic has not only gotten his team to a successful stage, but it has helped him complete the ultimate dream of playing baseball at the next level.  Boyd will continue his career at Walsh University to not only further his athletic career, but also study towards his ultimate career goal in being a chiropractor.  He will leave handprints on this Mooney program that will be felt for years to come.

Boyd has put up the numbers to back up his words. On the season, Boyd leads the Cardinals batting .341.  Going along with that high average is an even higher on base percentage coming in at .526.  He has drawn 13 walks on the season, which also leads the team. Boyd has knocked in 9 RBI with 3 doubles and 1 triple.  In the field Boyd has only made two errors all season proving that he can definitely bring it on both sides of the field.

Boyd took the time to join Anthony Hartwig to talk about his career at Mooney, and what he has helped build inside the program. They also discuss playing at the next level, what being a part of the Mooney Family really means, and so much more. Check out the latest Cardinal Mooney baseball Player Profile exclusively on YSN!
