That’s why a solid season last year that ended at the district championship still leaves a sour taste for the boys basketball team.  The Cardinals are bringing back a stacked squad with tremendous leadership that are determined to get back into Regionals, and beyond.

Cardinals head coach Carey Palermo hopped on YSN’s Running Point to talk about the upcoming season with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell.  They discuss what drives the team forward, things coach wants to see accomplished before game 1, and much more. CARDINALS COME UP JUST SHORT

YOUNGSTOWN, OH –

In a thrilling Friday night matchup, the Akron Buchtel Griffins clashed with the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals in an intense showdown. The energy was electric as the two teams took to the field. Cardinal Mooney struck first with an impressive 47-yard field goal by Mason Janis, taking an early 3-0 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. But Buchtel wasn’t fazed and quickly responded.

With just under two minutes left in the opening quarter, Buchtel’s Justin Hill plowed through the Cardinal Mooney defense with a powerful one-yard touchdown run. Although the PAT was blocked, Buchtel took the lead at 6-3. The lead, however, was short-lived, as Cardinal Mooney answered back in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Brady Desmond. The PAT was unsuccessful, but the Cardinals took a 9-6 lead with 9:03 left in the quarter.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter when Buchtel’s Stevie Diamond connected with Demetrice Coates for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Despite a blocked PAT, Buchtel regained the lead at 12-9 with 9:17 on the clock.

The game intensified in the fourth quarter. Justin Hill, showcasing his incredible speed and skill, dashed for a spectacular 46-yard touchdown run for Buchtel. A successful two-point conversion extended Buchtel’s lead to 20-9 with just over four minutes remaining.

As tensions mounted, the Buchtel defense stepped up, with Zaire Lewis intercepting a Cardinal Mooney pass and returning it an astonishing 72 yards for a momentum-shifting touchdown. Although the PAT was blocked, Buchtel surged ahead at 26-9 with only 2:52 left in the game.

Cardinal Mooney refused to go down without a fight. Ashton O’Brien connected with Carlos Gomez for a 20-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes, and Mason Janis successfully converted the PAT, narrowing the gap to 26-16 with just over a minute left in the game.

However, despite Cardinal Mooney’s late surge, time ran out, and the Akron Buchtel Griffins emerged victorious with a hard-fought 26-16 road win over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals.

CARDINALS SOAR PAST THE BEARS

YOUNGSTOWN. OH – It was a chilly Friday evening as the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals took on the East Golden Bears in a thrilling high school football matchup. The excitement in the air was palpable, and both teams were determined to claim victory on the gridiron.

The game kicked off with a burst of energy from the East Golden Bears. Just one minute into the first quarter, running back Thomas Davis exploded with a spectacular 57-yard run. The crowd cheered as Davis showcased his speed and agility. Shortly after, Davis punched the ball into the end zone with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving East an early lead of 6-0. However, their two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals quickly responded, showing their resilience and offensive prowess. With 1:51 left in the first quarter, running back Adyn Page carried the ball 8 yards into the end zone, giving the Cardinals their first touchdown of the game. Kicker Chris Clautti’s extra point was good, and Mooney took the lead, 7-6.

Mooney’s momentum continued to build as the first quarter came to a close. Quarterback Ashton O’Brien displayed his passing skills, connecting with tight end Johnathan Brenner on a 19-yard touchdown pass with just 32 seconds remaining. Chris Clautti’s reliable leg added the extra point, extending Mooney’s lead to 14-6.

The East Golden Bears, however, were not to be outdone. In the second quarter, Thomas Davis struck again with a 6-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap to 14-12 as their two-point attempt fell short.

But the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals continued to make their presence felt. O’Brien’s arm was on full display as he connected with wide receiver Matt Kay on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 5:21 left in the second quarter. Clautti’s PAT was good, and Mooney’s lead grew to 21-12.

The East Golden Bears refused to back down and clawed their way back into the game. Quarterback Andrew Blackmon orchestrated a drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nathaniel Torres. East’s two-point conversion attempt was once again unsuccessful, but they managed to narrow the gap to 21-18 with just 1:27 remaining in the second quarter.

As the clock wound down in the second quarter, Ashton O’Brien had one more trick up his sleeve. He launched a 12-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyon Flowers, and with Clautti’s extra point, Mooney’s lead stretched to 28-18.

The second half continued to favor the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. With 8:45 left in the third quarter, running back Cam Paige powered through with a 4-yard touchdown run, making it 35-18 after Clautti’s PAT.

O’Brien, the talented Mooney quarterback, extended their lead even further with a 19-yard touchdown run, and kicker Mason Janis added the extra point to make it 42-18 with 5:23 left in the game.

Mooney was not finished, and in the final minutes, O’Brien connected with Matt Kay again. This time, it was an 18-yard tip-drill touchdown pass that left the East Golden Bears in disbelief. The extra point attempt was no good, but Mooney sealed the deal with a commanding 48-18 lead.

When the final whistle blew, the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals emerged as the victors, their determination and skill on full display. The win was a testament to their teamwork and resilience, and their fans celebrated this exciting victory on that chilly Friday night under the stadium lights.

PUSHING IT TO THE BRINK

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In the world of high school volleyball, few athletes shine as brightly as Cardinal Mooney’s junior outside hitter, Brinkley Bair. This season, she’s not just back on the court; she’s better than ever, capturing the attention of fans and opponents alike.

After a season on the sidelines, Brinkley’s return has been nothing short of spectacular. Her athleticism is unmatched, making her one of the most exciting players in the Youngstown area. What sets her apart is her impeccable transition. Brinkley’s approach to the ball is lightning fast, leaving opposing blockers struggling to react to her powerful swings.

Her 2023 stats speak volumes about her impact on the team. With 160 kills, she averages an impressive 2.4 kills per set. She’s not just an offensive powerhouse; Brinkley is equally proficient on the defensive end with 112 digs. Her serving skills are nothing to scoff at, contributing 9 aces to her team’s success. Moreover, her ability to block at the net with 17 blocks showcases her versatility.

HARDING SNEAKS UP ON THE CARDINALS IN THE END

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a hard-fought matchup, Cardinal Mooney went head-to-head with Warren Harding in a thrilling contest that ultimately ended in a heartbreaking 24-21 loss for Mooney.

The first quarter set the tone for an exciting game as Harding’s Chaz Coleman connected with Ryan Powell on a 47-yard pass, resulting in a touchdown at the 10:27 mark. The extra point attempt failed, but Harding took an early 6-0 lead.

Mooney quickly responded when Adyn Paige broke through Harding’s defense with a 4-yard rushing touchdown at 6:12. With the successful extra point, Mooney took a 7-6 lead.

Later in the first quarter, Jake Daugherty of Harding made a 27-yard field goal, helping his team regain the lead at 9-7 with 1:34 left in the quarter.

The third quarter saw Mooney reclaiming the momentum. Ashton O’Brien connected with Jon Brenner for a 19-yard touchdown pass at the 3:04 mark, extending Mooney’s lead to 14-9. O’Brien continued to shine, throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Gomez at 1:54, further extending Mooney’s lead to 21-9.

However, Warren Harding wasn’t ready to concede the game. Chaz Coleman had an impressive 23-yard rushing touchdown at just 14 seconds left in the third quarter, narrowing the score to 21-16.

As the game entered the decisive fourth quarter, Harding managed to complete a comeback. Coleman orchestrated a 2-yard rushing touchdown at 0:38, putting Harding ahead 24-21. To secure the win, Coleman successfully converted a 2-point conversion with a pass to Khamari Adams, solidifying the 24-21 victory for Warren Harding.

AMARRA ADDS TO THE ANDERSON LEGACY

HAVING A BLAST WITH BLASKO

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In volleyball, the setter’s role is often considered one of the most pivotal on the court. For Cardinal Mooney’s young but incredibly talented sophomore setter, Natalie Blasko, this season has been all about embracing leadership, making every set count, and cherishing moments shared with her older sister, Angelee.

Natalie’s emergence as the varsity setter in her first year is a testament to her natural leadership skills. On the court, she exudes confidence and composure beyond her years, guiding her team with an instinctual understanding of the game.

Playing alongside her senior sister, Angelee, has been a cherished experience for Natalie. The sibling bond they share is evident not only in their personal connection but also in their synergy on the volleyball court. It’s a unique opportunity that both sisters have embraced.

Crucial to Natalie’s confidence is the trust and belief placed in her by head coach Toni Chahine. This trust has empowered Natalie to take the reins as a setter and guide her team effectively.

Statistically, Natalie has been a force to be reckoned with this season. With an impressive 459 assists and an average of 7.2 assists per set, she has shown remarkable playmaking abilities. Furthermore, her skills extend beyond the net, with 144 digs to her name. Natalie’s performance suggests that she’s well on her way to achieving the milestone of 500 assists, setting the stage for an extraordinary career that could potentially see her reach 1,000 assists before her senior season even begins.
