HOT CORNER WITH SPECIAL GUEST ASHLEY BURKHARDT

Another week in softball that was unfortunately shortened due to the weather. That being said, there is always plenty to talk about every week. It’s going to be a great edition of the Hot Corner.

High School Recap: 

The week got started with a big statement inside the MVAC. Champion thumped Crestview to prove to the conference, and the softball scene that they were not a second thought. The Flashes scored a combined 22 runs in the first innings of the two games on Monday and Tuesday. Emma Gumant brought the power in game one knocking in 5 RBI with a home run. Gumant also pitched a gem throwing 8 strike outs in her 5.0 IP.  Then Champion one upped their game in the second meeting scoring 12 runs in the first inning. Much like her teammate in the first game, Cassidy Shaffer matched wonderful pitching with a power stacked offensive production. Shaffer went 4-4 with 5 RBI at the plate, while also throwing 5 innings giving up 0 earned runs. Both teams came into this series with a legitimate chance to win the MVAC, and Champion firmly planted their flag as remaining top dog in the conference.

Poland also came into this week leading their conference the NE8. Girard took a shot at the Bulldogs, and they didn’t miss. Emily Rosace handcuffed the high powered Poland offense. Rosace used her velocity, and riseball to keep the Bulldogs off balance. Rosace only gave up 1 run in 7 innings. She struck out 5. Abbie Rafferty led the charge at the plate for Girard. She went 3-3 with a RBI. Girard scored 3 runs, which was more than enough for the outing Rosace had. Girard’s win now shortens Poland’s lead on South Range to just 1 game. Poland still has a season series with Hubbard. And if the Eagles can win that series, or split it things all of the sudden get very interesting inside the NE8.

Jordan Anderson has been impressive in the circle all season for West Branch. She’s pitched multiple shut outs, and has come close to perfect games before, but this week she finally joined the perfect game party. Anderson reached perfection in the Warriors 11-0 win over Howland. The Tigers offense is no slouch. Cloe Lopez has 5 home runs on the year, and the Tigers have 12 as a team. Anderson was not phased by the threat of power. She struck out 10 Tigers on her way to perfection.

I was so excited to finally get a chance to head down to Louisville to see the Leopards play. They split a double header with a strong Claymont team. Kaylee Nolte absolutely lived up to her billing. The future Walsh player hit a two run home run on the day, and went 5-9 in the two games with 5 total RBI. She is one of the returning of their 2019 state championship team, and if the Leopards make another tournament run. You know Kaylee Nolte will be square in the middle of it.

YSN Alums:

Allison Smith continues her freshman season with Ohio State. She still leads the team in strike outs by a sizable margin. Smith has 109 strike outs on the season. Her ERA is still a very respectable 3.32. Smith has a record of 9-11, she also leads the team in complete games with 8. Also from Champion, Sophie Howell was a part of YSU’s first Horizon League regular season championship in program history. Howell pitched out of the bullpen in game 2 against Cleveland State throwing 2 innings, striking out 3, and giving up 1 hit. Lisbon’s Kennedy Vrable did not get an at bat over the weekend, but still deserves much credit for her team’s success. Mooney’s Conchetta Rinaldi continues to impress behind the plate for the Penguins. Rinaldi went 2-4 in game 2 vs the Vikings with 4 RBI. She went 1-3 in the Penguins series finale win that clinched the Horizon League title. South Range’s Caragyn Yanek continues her senior season with Findlay. Yanek got her 9th win of the season over the weekend against Hillsdale. Yanek struck out 8 in 5.0 IP. Louisville’s Sydney McKeever continues to fill in her role with Toledo as a baserunner. The Rockets are 23-20 as they gear up for the MAC tournament which will be held at Akron Firestone Stadium not too far from Louisville. I’m sure Sydney will have a strong fan base there.

Special Guest: Ashley Burkhardt 

Ashley is an Indiana native, Fort Wayne to be exact who won a state title in her high school days. Something not many people get to experience. However as Ashley’s career went on, she continued to be able to do things that not many others get to do. Burkhardt was recruited and signed to Purdue. The raise in level didn’t stop Burkhardt from shining on the field. Ashley was named NFCA All Region 3 years in a row. She was named first team All-Big 10 in 2014. In 2015, she had a slugging percentage of .618, hit 48 RBI, and 11 HR. Her success at Purdue earned her recognition and interested from the National Pro Fastpitch league. After her senior season she was drafted by the Dallas Charge. She also went on to be a volunteer assistant at Purdue. Ashley spent two season in the NPF before ending her career. Now, Ashley has her own physical and mental training program. She has a passion for working with the age group that is still growing into who they will be. RISHEL SHINES IN PITCHERS DUEL WITH CRESTVIEW

NEW WATERFORD, OH- Jaden Rishel looked like a pitcher that was well above his years on Saturday afternoon.  The Freshmen tossed 6 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball before Cam Hollobaugh came in for the one pitch save, as JFK defeated the Crestview Rebels 2-0.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Rishel struck out eight, while Campbell sat down two.

Sam Campbell took the loss for Crestview. The bulldog surrendered two runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out two.

Offensively, Alex DeSalvo went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead JFK in hits. The Eagles were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Caleb Hadley had the most chances in the field with ten, and impressed behind the dish with his efforts.

Campbell led Crestview with two hits in four at-bats.

REBELS BOUNCE BACK

COLUMBIANA OH-

Kaedyn Sutton had all the right stuff on Wednesday for Crestview , allowing zero runs and besting Beaver by a score of 6-0

Crestview secured the victory thanks to six runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by a single by McKenna Schultz, an error on a ball put in play by Ellie Ricketts, and a double by Jensyn Seabrook.

Sutton was the winning pitcher for Crestview . The righty lasted seven innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out eight.

Crestview tallied seven hits in the game. Sutton and Schultz each managed multiple hits. Schultz and Sutton each collected two hits to lead.

CHAMPION SENDS STRONG MESSAGE WITH BLOWOUT

WARREN OH-

Emma Gumont didn’t allow a single run against Crestview, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Champion to a 17-0 victory on Monday

Gumont led Champion to victory by driving in five runs. Gumont went 3-for-4 at the plate. Gumont drove in runs on a single in the first, a single in the third, and a home run in the fourth.

The Golden Flashes got on the board in the first inning when Kaedyn Sutton induced Isabella Meyer to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.

A single by Shianna Mathes in the first inning was a positive for Crestview.

Gumont got the start for Champion. Gumont went five innings, allowing zero runs on four hits, striking out eight and walking zero.

Sutton was in the circle for Crestview. The bulldog lasted four innings, allowing 12 hits and 17 runs while striking out four.

Champion launched four home runs on the day. Gumont had a long ball in the fourth inning. Cassidy Shaffer had a four bagger in the fourth inning. Olivia Zigarovich went deep in the first inning.

Champion totaled 12 hits in the game. Gumont, Shaffer, and Lauren Fife each had multiple hits. Shaffer and Gumont each managed three hits to lead.

Crestview scattered four hits in the game. Mathes and Sutton all managed multiple hits.

CRESTVIEW KEEPS SWINGING IN WIN OVER GENEVA

CANFIELD OH-

McKenna Schultz was an RBI machine on Saturday, driving in four on three hits to lead Crestview past Geneva 11-6 on Saturday. Schultz drove in runs on a single in the fourth and a double in the seventh.

The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game. Crestview collected 12 hits and Geneva had 11.

The Eagles captured the lead in the second inning. Abby Stash drove in two when Stash doubled.

Crestview took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning. In the third Brooke Brubaker singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs.

Crestview notched five runs in the seventh inning. Karsyn Moore, Brubaker, Jensyn Seabrook, and Schultz each drove in runs.

Kaedyn Sutton earned the victory on the rubber for the Rebels . The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs while striking out seven.

Daliz Alvarez took the loss for Geneva. The hurler went seven innings, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits and striking out five.

Crestview saw the ball well today, racking up 12 hits in the game. Brubaker, Schultz, and Sutton each managed multiple hits. Brubaker went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Crestview in hits.

Geneva totaled 11 hits. Stash, Carmen Alvarez, and Makayla Van Sickle all collected multiple hits. Stash led with three hits in four at bats.

SEABROOK WALKS IT OFF

COLUMBIANA OH-

Crestview took their game in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple LaBrae 5-4. The game was tied at four with Crestview batting in the bottom of the seventh when Jensyn Seabrook singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Vikings tied things up at four. Aryana Hartman drove in one when she doubled.

Kaedyn Sutton earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle for Crestview . Sutton lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and four runs while striking out four.

Grace Barnhart took the loss for LaBrae. Barnhart went six and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out four.

Crestview collected 11 hits on the day. Alexis Smith, Brooke Brubaker, Karsyn Moore, and Shianna Mathes all had multiple hits. Mathes, Moore, Brubaker, and Smith each collected two hits to lead.

The Vikings scattered ten hits in the game. Hartman and Myra Kintz each had multiple hits. Hartman led with three hits in four at bats.

REBELS HANG ON TO EARLY LEAD

COLUMBIANA OH- the temperature gradually climbed on Saturday afternoon as Crestview and Springfield met in a non conference battle. The Rebels scored 2 in the first, and that was all they needed in the 2-1 win over the Tigers.

The Rebels got their runs on one swing. After Kaedyn Sutton reached on an error in the outfield Karsyn Moore bashed a two run home runs to make the Tigers pay.

The Tigers scored their run as Abby Joseph reached on an error, and on that error Carlee Bacon turn to head home but tripped over the third baseman. Obstruction was called and Bacon was granted the score.

Outside of that both pitchers did a phenomenal job keeping the opposing offenses kept down.

Things got dramatic in the top of the 7th when Springfield put a runner on third with 2 outs. Maddi Lesnak came to the plate and Sutton got her looking to end the game.

Sutton was awarded the Baird Brothers player of the game for her work in the circle. Her final line was 7.0 IP 3 H 0 ER 4 BB 9 K.

Lesnak pitched well in the loss for the Tigers. Her final line was 6.0 IP 2 H 2 ER 2 BB 4 K.

Moore went 1-2 with a walk, a home run, 2 RBI and a run scored. Sutton went 1-3 on the day.

Bacon went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored for the Tigers. She was the only hitter with multiple hits.

BROOKFIELD BRINGS THE RAIN TO BEAT REBELS

Crestview watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 9-2 loss to Brookfield on Friday. The Warriors scored on a error in the first inning and a single by Sophia Hook in the second inning.

Crestview struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Brookfield, giving up nine runs.

The Warriors got things started in the first inning. An error scored two runs.

Miranda Nicholson pitched Brookfield to victory. The ace lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out eight.

Kaedyn Sutton took the loss for Crestview . Sutton lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs while striking out 11.

Crestview launched one home run on the day. Sutton put one out in the first inning.

McKenna Schultz, Sutton, and Katie Lissi each collected one hit to lead Crestview .

Brookfield racked up 11 hits in the game. Hook, Jenae Pugh, and Grace Schultz each collected multiple hits.

SUTTON SHATTERS STRIKEOUT RECORD IN REBELS WIN

COLUMBIANA OH-

Both teams were strong in the circle Thursday, but Crestview defeated Jackson-Milton 2-1. Kaedyn Sutton allowed just four hits to Jackson-Milton.

Sutton was credited with the victory for Crestview . The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 17 and walking one. Her 17 strikeouts broke the Crestview program record for strikeouts in a game.

Riley Headley took the loss for Jackson-Milton. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out eight.

Shianna Mathes, Sutton, and Jensyn Seabrook all had one hit to lead Crestview .

CRESTVIEW CRASHES THE PARTY IN LIBERTY

LIBERTY OH-

Crestview nabbed the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over Liberty on Friday. The game was tied at two with Crestview batting in the top of the eighth when Matthew Lindsay was struck by a pitch, driving in a run.

Liberty got things started in the second inning. Derek DeMattia singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Rebels tied things up at two. An error scored one run.

Keith Berger got the win for Crestview. The righthander went three innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out six. Tyler Milhorn threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Milhorn recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Trevor Strohmeyer took the loss for Liberty. The pitcher lasted eight innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out four.

Eli Riffle started the game for the Rebels. The righty allowed five hits and two runs over four innings, striking out four and walking one

Kyle Saunders, Matthew Strank, and Carter Blakeman each collected one hit to lead Crestview.
