JOHNSTON BEATS BUZZER; BULLDOGS BEAT LISBON

LISBON, OH- Kenzee Johnston is determined to go out on her terms to finish her senior season.  The EP guard finished with 17 points and paced the Bulldogs on the way to a thrilling victory over Lisbon 51-50 Thursday night.

The Bulldogs trailed the entire game and were down by 6 in the last minute of the game before East Palestine blazed back into the game to pull off the conference win on the road.  With under ten seconds remaining in the game, and the Bulldogs down a pair, the ball was rolled in play when Payton Sherry picked up the ball just before midcourt, took a couple of dribbles before dishing to Johnston who without hesitation- drained the shot from beyond the arc.

Also contributing to the victory for East Palestine was Joclyn Fristik with 12.  Payton Sherry and Morgan Rutledge each chipped in 7 apiece.

For Lisbon, thousand point scorers Maddie Liberati led all scorers with 24, while Izzy Perez turned in 21.

BLUE DEVILS SILENCE BULLDOGS

LISBON, OH – On a night that saw two teams battle each other hard from opening tip to final buzzer, it was the Lisbon Blue Devils that emerged victorious over the East Palestine Bulldogs, 60-48. Each team came into the game knowing that a win would go a long way when playoff voting begins this weekend.

Both teams started off the first quarter with a bit of a dry spell as Lisbon ended the quarter up 7-5. The second quarter saw both teams trade baskets and get hot from the field as the score favored the Blue Devils 25-20 at the half. The second half however saw Lisbon start to stretch their legs a little bit and control the tempo as they would eventually pull away for a twelve point victory.

East Palestine was led by Johnathan Bertovich with 22 points and Zion Figley with 7 points.

Lisbon was led by Michael Davis with 23 points. Ryan McCullough chipped in with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Kaden Crawford also added 7 rebounds tonight.

Up next for the Lisbon Blue Devils (8-10) will be a home match up with their rivals, the Columbiana Clippers on Friday, February 7th. It will also be senior night for the Blue Devils as they will honor their five seniors before the game.

The East Palestine Bulldogs (3-13) will be on the road again this Friday, as they will travel up to Columbiana to take on the Lions of Heartland Christian.

MUSLOVSKI STAYS RED-HOT; CLIPPERS BOUNCE BULLDOGS

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It was a game that was circled on the calendars for both teams, albeit, for different reasons.  East Palestine was attempting to gain its first victory over the Clippers in the Muslovski-era of Columbiana, while Columbiana was looking to lock up a stranglehold on the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.  It ended up being Columbiana who showed up shooting off the bus, essentially, on their way to a 75-33 drubbing of the Lady Bulldogs.

Columbiana Senior, Kayla Muslovski, was phenomenal in her finale against the Bulldogs putting up 36 points in about 3 and a half quarters of play.  Grace Witmer also showed up in a big way adding 10 in the scorebook for Columbiana while Karissa Tringhese and Grace Hammond set the tone on the glass combining for 16 boards.

For East Palestine, Morgan Rutledge led the way with 12 points and was supplemented by Kenzee Johnston’s 7, and Paige Snyder’s 6 tallies.

Both team’s next test will be against Southern Local.  East Palestine (10-7, 6-4) will host the Lady Indians on Wednesday while Columbiana (15-3,11-0) will travel to The Wigwam Thursday to wrap up their conference schedule.

TRAVELING TROPHY STAYS PUT; CLIPS ROUTE EP

COLUMBIANA, OH- The Clippers wasted no time on Friday setting the tone against their EOAC rivals.  Columbiana outscored East Palestine 25-5 in the first frame and didn’t slow the pace the rest of the way on their way to an 88-46 victory to hold onto the traveling trophy until the teams meet again on the gridiron later this year.

The Clippers, who will be featured on this weekend’s episode of YSN’s Level Up were keyed in from the tipoff.  In a balanced and steady attack, it was former Big Dog of the Valley, Matt Mazei, who posted 17 on the glass and another 17 through the net on his way to a double-double.  Sean Whitehead finished with 16, while Carter Pasco had 11.

The East Palestine girls went on the road Thursday night and won a thriller over United 43-40.

Both offenses started slow with the score being just 6-2 East Palestine after the first quarter. With a halftime score of just 13-8 it was looking to a very low scoring game. East Palestine looked to run away with it leading 31-20 after 3. United found fire in the final quarter though making the game an instant classic. The Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 20-14 in the final frame but it wasn’t enough to come all the way back. East Palestine would escape with a 45-40 victory.

FRISTIK TIES CAREER-HIGH; BULLDOGS TOAST TIGERS

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Fresh off a 30-point career-high mark against Southern, East Palestine Junior sharpshooter, Joclyn Fristik was at it again on Monday against Wellsville.  The Bulldogs were able to put away their EOAC foes to the tune of 70-36.

Fristik led all scorers with 30 points which ties her career-high that she posted just the game before against the Lady Indians.  Also, big contributors to the victory from the Bulldogs were Payton Sherry with 10 rebounds and 8 assists to go with 6 points, as well as Paige Snyder who scored 8 with 4 takeaways and 7 boards.  Kenzee Johnston had 15 points to supplement the scoring while Morgan Rutledge had 6.

Wellsville was led by Cameron Carlevale’s 17 points, followed up by Hunter Weekley’s 9 tallies.

REALFRISTIK EXPECTATIONS

EAST PALESTINE, OH- The hardest work is done when the spotlight isn’t on you.  That’s the mantra of East Palestine Junior Guard, Joclyn Fristik.  The humble sharpshooter will be quick to compliment or give quick praise to her teammates before ever calling her own number, but it’s the hustle that she’s provided that has sparked a resurgence of hoops in EP.

Fristik was featured in a retweet in 2019’s offseason by the Miami Heat that absolutely crushed it from a numbers perspective.  The video was of Fristik alone in the gym hitting 18 straight 3-point shots, and putting the work in.  While that wasn’t the reason she filmed the workout, it surely was a surprise to her to garner so much attention.  But should it be?  Coaches around the area have 15 circled on their clipboards knowing if they contain Fristik, it forces the hand of those around her.

We caught up with Joclyn prior to EP’s second time through their gauntlet schedule to talk about the past, present, and future- but to also acquire REALFRISTIK EXPECTATIONS.

The two squads battled almost evenly through the first part of the first quarter until the Blue Devils caught fire from deep, connecting on three straight threes as the quarter wrapped up which put the score at 19-9 in favor of Lisbon. The second quarter saw Lisbon begin to stretch their legs a little bit more as they took a 33-17 lead into the intermission. As the second half progressed, the Blue Devils kept steady as the Bulldogs tried to scrap their way back into the game but as the final buzzer sounded, the Blue Devils were just too far ahead, winning 67-42.
