THE MOST LIKE-ABEL GUY IN THE ROOM

For anybody who has ever had the privilege to meet East Palestine’s Abel Figley, you know his personality is contagious.  A big frame of a young man who is built like a tank yet seems to be always joyful and smiling.  His joy for his friends, teammates, and community is immediately noticeable from the jump.  He quickly became one of the fan favorite’s in East Palestine with his hand-shake rituals and sniper-like shooting ability from beyond the arc.  Case in point: Figley drained 7 three-pointers in a game against Southern Local en route to 23 points, and a nod for the YSN-Baird Brothers Big Dogs of the Valley Nomination in Week 12.

However, the glory doesn’t always come easy for Abel, as his hard work and determination alongside his work-ethic have cleared a path for playing time alongside his teammates.  What’s more encouraging is the role model he is to the underclassmen and younger generations of Bulldogs.  If you’re at an EP event, you don’t have to look very far to find Abel.  He’s the guy in the front row cheering the loudest for his school, surrounded by his friends following his lead.

YSN’s Tim Figley caught up for a little family reunion and has this week’s East Palestine Bulldogs Player Profile: THE MOST LIKE-ABEL GUY IN THE ROOM.

VANCE’S CHANCE

There’s a youth movement happening in East Palestine.  As the next wave of Bulldog stars moves into the spotlight, there’s new names, new faces, and new responsibilities.  For this year’s Bulldogs, it’s been a transition year across the board.  Above it all, the Bulldogs have remained competitive.

For Freshman, Cooper Vance, it’s been worth the wait.  Vance’s skill set is that of someone 3-4 years older, with the temperament to coincide.  Vance has a slow heartbeat in big moments and has become a solid option in the Bulldog lineup.  With names like Sherry, Darlington, Figley, and Posey that have been household names for the past 4 years- Cooper seeks their wisdom, and stamp of approval as much as those seniors seek Vance’s ability to carry the torch with his teammates over the next four years.

YSN’s Dan Figley sits down with a young man who between him and his teammates, give Bulldog Nation a reason to celebrate now- with excitement for the future.  Our East Palestine Basketball Player Profile for this week: VANCE’S CHANCE.

MIXON THINGS UP

East Palestine used to have a secret weapon.  A young, powerful, basketball savvy post-forward who can shake and bake down low, or dispose of her defender at will with her skill and determination.

Now- East Palestine has a well-known weapon.  Junior, Jaliyah Mixon has been through it all, seemingly.  She’s battled adversity in her personal life to which she’s overcome and shined on the other side, and uses her experience as stepping stones to where she wants to be.  Mixon is now looked to as a leader and a catalyst on this team, and as she goes, so do the Bulldogs.  Opposing coaches prepare for “21.”

Through all the adversity and accolades, Jaliyah prides herself on becoming a role model in the community and being able to look into the stands on game night with young eyes peering back at her, confident that she is getting things done on, and off the court.  According to Coach Franklin, Mixon has had to change the way she plays.  “She’s gone from getting a rebound and taking it down to the other end by herself, to passing to our guards and working her way into the paint, which opens up more opportunities for the team,” said Franklin.

Mixon’s growth as a student-athlete has also come in the classroom along with the hardwood.  Jaliyah attributes her success to a couple of her teachers who have helped her along the way, including one that serves as a coach in the stands.

All of this leads to our East Palestine Basketball Player Profile for the Week: MIXON THINGS UP!

EAST PALESTINE BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH WILL FRANKLIN (EP 4)

In Bulldog Country, the Lady Dogs have experienced a few bumps in the road in the form of EOAC Conference play.  Columbiana and Lisbon presented threats and lived up to the billing.  The Lady Clippers providing Coach Franklin’s girls with their only loss on their home floor, and Lady Devils capturing revenge for a loss to EP earlier in the season.

However, the Lady Dogs look to bounce back in a big way and try to catch fire just before the tournament.  The biggest opponent isn’t even on the schedule, as snow has forced the hands of many in the area and broken any rhythm teams are having.

What can be done to keep the competitive edge when games get canceled?  Is there enough elasticity in EP this year for the bounce back?

THY KING DOM COME

In East Palestine, Senior- Dominick Posey has been going about his business between the lines in such a professional manner.  He doesn’t pander for admiration, he is a staple in the community, and he continues to get the job done on the floor for the Bulldogs.

Posey continues to be not only one of East Palestine’s finest athletes in recent history but is persistent in building his legacy on the basketball court.  Posey’s athleticism makes him a constant x-factor in every coaches meeting around the area, and is one of the main reasons he will be playing sports at the next level, and makes him King of the court in East Palestine.

Could it be possible that his legacy is just getting started?
